Cabazon Dinosaurs with Pee-wee Herman Memorial Makeover

A Weird Roadside exhibit

This weekend, @little-ricky, @afturner and I went on a roadtrip from Los Angeles to Twentynine palms California to say goodbye to my oldest living relative, my great aunt Joy who recently passed away at the grand age of 93. It was an exhausting couple of days because the little one simply would not go to sleep in the hotel room so we were all pretty tired on the ride home.

After a bit of driving through the desert, @little-ricky screamed out "T-Rex!"

I took a look ahead and sure enough there sat a giant T-Rex as well as an even larger brontosaurus. Being tired and thirsty we decided to pull over and have a closer look.

The T-Rex with a Pee-wee Herman outfit painted over his body in memory of Paul Reubens

The giant constructions are apparently known as the Cabazon Dinosaurs. If you click on the link you can learn more about the history of the dinosaurs by reading their Wikipedia entry.

The construction of the dinosaurs began all the way back in 1964, but both weren't completely finished until 1985. The first one that was built was called "Dinny the Brontosaurus" seen below.

There is an entire gift shop inside selling mostly dinosaur themed toys

Ricky was so excited by the sheer size of these creations. He was running around having a blast while his mother and I were feeling like our heads were going to explode from the super dry heat. It is nuts how it can be this hot just a couple of hours away from LA.

Little one was running laps around Dinny's huge feet

After having a look around the gift shop (sorry, didn't get any photos - it was tight up there!) we walked over toward the T-Rex. Since it had recently been painted over in honor of Paul Reubens character "Pee Wee Herman", there were a lot of people leaving little trinkets at the feet of the giant beast.

I got a little choked up seeing this

Pee-wee Herman was a character that was pretty well loved by a lot of us kids who grew up in the 80s. I don't know what it was about him. He was completely ridiculous but just made you laugh every time!

Couldn't get him to look at the camera. Too excited!

I must say that every time we are traveling around the country we always run into some weird exhibits on the side of the road. 9 times out of 10 they are location in the middle of nowhere. Well, I suppose if you live in Cabazon you might not think it is the middle of nowhere.

It was a fun little stop but I was happy to be back on the road and headed home. And I was even more happy to plop down in my own bed and get a good 9 and a half hours of well earned sleep!

Haha, that is pretty awesome. It kind of reminds me of the sculpture park that we just visited a little bit ago. The fact that they painted him like PeeWee is pretty cool too. What a great tribute! Sorry that the little one wasn't able to sleep well. New situations and locations can be tough.

Yeah, it seems like every time we end up in a hotel, no one gets any sleep except for @little-ricky. Well, he technically isn't getting any more sleep than us, but for him it is high quality sleep because he conks out instantaneously while @afturner and I take like an hour to fall asleep. Then he wakes up and starts climbing on us again, and the process starts over.

Hopefully he'll get better as he gets a bit older and doesn't freak out in new places...

I hope so too for your sake! I wish I had some advice to give you, but I don't. Unless you are trying to get your dog to sleep. Then I might be able to help!

Wow, what a cool discovery! We have a bunch of giant dinosaurs like that at the zoo here. When my kids were younger, they loved going there and trying to climb them (of course they could barely climb above the feet).

Yeah, he was freaking out when he realized that you could climb inside of the bronto. And especially when he saw the toy store inside. haha! I don't know what it is with kids and dinosaurs.

Thanks for sharing this content with us, well, I guess you made the right choice by stopping by and looking around, I guess it must be fun to around the great creation. I think it's good to explore every moment we had, that’s how we could enjoy ourselves.

These days if I see something interesting while traveling I will try to pull over and check it out if I'm not in too much of a hurry. You can really come across some cool stuff!

So sorry about the passing away of your great aunt Joy.

I have always wished to see Dinosaurs but I heard it's gone into extinction, I sure would check more about it via the link you sent.

Little Ricky having some fun, haha, one thing I love most is adventure; exploring and discovering new things excites me so much.

The good thing is you and your family arrived home safely and a little Ricky allowed you to have 9 hours of sleep.😅

Well, I think it's lucky for us that the dinosaurs are extinct. I don't think humans would do too well with T-Rex running around. Hahaha!

Yes, it was sad that Aunt Joy passed away. She was a very lovely and sweet lady. But she was 93 and had a wonderful life.

We are glad to be back home though, that desert is no joke! Not to mention that Hurricane Hilary hit the town I was in very hard! A lot of flooding.

Oh my world, I hope you and your family are safe.

So sorry to hear about the Hurricane.

Yeah it turned out to not be too bad after all. We did get an earthquake in the middle of the hurricane which was crazy, but honestly it barely rained where I live. Others got it much worse out in the desert funny enough.

It's really a nice place to visit and the dinasours look really nice and more attractive for children to like.

Thanks for your comments! The dinosaurs looked really big from the highway, but once we pulled over and walked up to them we were quite blown away by just how big they are. It must have taken a lot of effort to build them!

This is a giant T-Rex. Little kids love these things and it's great to have a photo with your child. Because that's the only memory you'll have for years to come.

A good sleep after a tiring journey is well deserved man!

I did finally get a good night sleep but it took a few days! Sometimes it takes me a while to catch up. Thanks for stopping by!

He is a huge fan of dinosaurs in general. I think T-Rex is his favorite thing to be honest. He has lots of toy versions! I think this visit was really exciting for him.

what did I miss again? On my infrequent visits - and too late to vote. Tipping is not working for me since I always do something wrong having to sign in again for that.
So just answer me and I upvote your reply.
Looks like you had fun (i.e. Ricky did) and your pics turned out great. Such venues are all over the USA (and Canada, for that matter) and usually marked as "worlds largest .....", such as several I seen in Montana and Idaho, and also in my own former home province of Alberta 'Worlds Largest Ukrainian Easter Egg'.

Haha, yeah that's true. Everything is the World's Largest, or heaviest, or whateverest. That is America for you.

I hope you are well and enjoying summer - here in Vienna it is going over into Fall very soon. The heat broke and now it is more bearable (for me). Like every workday morning, the Kindergarten kids in our building are playing in the courtyard, so I don't need an alarm clock to wake me up. Just having breakfast, but not quite like this (maybe soon my next post):

I'm so sorry to hear about your great aunt Joy. It's always hard to say goodbye to a loved one, especially one who has lived such a long and full life. I'm glad you were able to make the trip to say goodbye, even though it was exhausting.
