Visiting the Los Angeles Zoo

avatar

A Bright and Sunny Afternoon

Last week for the first time we decided to check out the Los Angeles Zoo. Even though we've lived here for many years, we have never been to the local zoo. I think we got spoiled by the San Diego Zoo, and had heard that this one was much smaller so didn't bother checking it out. It is indeed quite a lot smaller, but there is still a lot of great things to see there. We ended up getting a membership so that I can take @little-ricky as often as I like.

Look at those wings!

These guys are set up pretty near to the zoo entrance. I really love their vibrant colors. I have read that they get their coloring from the food that they eat, specifically carotenoids. In nature they eat a lot of algae and brine shrimp that contains the substance which ends up metabolized leaving pigment to spread throughout their feathers.

There are several types of flamingos at the zoo

The sign indicated that there are two different species housed at the zoo. There may have been more, but I only saw the two. They seem quite content just roaming around snacking and relaxing in their habitat.

This elephant looked so dejected

Not much further along you will find this somewhat sad looking elephant. I might be putting an undue emotion on him, but he really seemed to be moping around. It is also very possible that he is just incredibly old! He/She looked kind of gaunt to me, but what do I know about elephants. For all I know, this elephant is living the great life and is quite pleased with its situation. I do know that these are very intelligent creatures. I didn't see any other elephants around, so I don't know if it is alone or not. We arrived a bit late in the afternoon and a lot of the animals were put away, so it's possible that there is another one living here.

Chilling on the rocks

There were quite a few chimpanzees to see at the zoo. Unfortunately, all I brought with me was my 85mm RF lens, so I couldn't get any good closeups of the animals that were further away. I did the best that I could though! I really want to buy a fast telephoto lens, but I really can't justify the cost since I don't really do anything that would make money with it.

This particular chimp was making a lot of noise and I think he was annoying some of the other residents. At some point he kind of went off by himself and sat in the corner.

raising hell

So the chimp in the above photo on the far right had everyone pretty grossed out and amused. It hung its butt over the edge of that cliff and started to pee. After it peed, it reached its hand around and cupped it under its butt and took a big dump into it. Immediately afterward, it started to eat it while closing its eyes with an ecstatic expression on its face.

Thankfully I wasn't eating anything at the time, because I might have lost my lunch. Sadly for many zoo visitors they weren't so lucky. I saw quite a few people make gagging faces and others laughing pretty hard. That was something that I really didn't need to see that day! But hey, nature is nature.

Whatchoo looking at fool?

These guys were by far little Ricky's favorites. We kept going back and forth between the giraffes and the elephant. He kept yelling "Giraffe!!!" then he'd run toward them. As soon as we'd get to the giraffes he'd yell "Elephant!!!" and run back in that direction.

2Y1A5653.jpg

At this point I have seen a lot of giraffes in person and various locations. I never really get used to how large these animals are, though. They are such alien looking creatures!

2Y1A5619.jpg

I think there are just two giraffes in the zoo, but there may have been more that I was not aware of. We really only just caught a few minutes with them before they were brought in for the night. This particular night I think they were shutting things down a bit early because they were doing a lunar near years light show as soon as it got dark. I think that they wanted to get the animals settled in before it got dark so that they wouldn't be disturbed by all of the guests. And it ended up being a really packed house! I actually took a lot of photos as that event and will talk about it in a separate post.

Lunch time!

Just as they were taking in the giraffes, we heard a seriously loud ruckus nearby. It sounded like a Planet of the Apes battle commencing. The chimps are right next to the giraffes, so we headed over there quickly to see what was going on.

It turned out that it was just food time. They gave all of the chimps their own huge bunch of lettuce and they were going crazy. You can see the one on the right enjoying the core on its own after peeling off all of the outer leaves. That's pretty funny because it is my favorite part as well. I guess I ain't nothing but an ape.

Happily swimming around

Sadly I didn't get to see much in the water at all. A lot of the exhibits seemed to be shut down for maintenance or whatever reason. I did see this one critter pop up out of the water a few times though. Ricky was pretty excited about it!

The wildest of wild animals

And now we come to the most untamed of all the wild animals, @little-ricky. This kid was running around like a headless chicken. I don't think I've ever seen him run so fast. I think I spent a great deal of the day just trying to keep up with him! It is surprising to me how quickly his run upgraded from a fast walk (for me) to an outright sprint. This kid can really move. And to make matters worse, he is tiny and can maneuver between people in such a way that it's hard to keep up with him.

I have a feeling we are going to be spending a lot of time at the LA Zoo this summer. At least I've found a new way to burn off some of his energy!

I love zoo visits with kids. They get so excited and are really curious about everything. It's enjoyable seeing that excitement.

Those are some fantastic photos! I showed my oldest and now he wants to go to the zoo 😅 (I told him maybe this weekend)

He kept yelling "Giraffe!!!" then he'd run toward them. As soon as we'd get to the giraffes he'd yell "Elephant!!!" and run back in that direction.

😂

That's cute, because my kids act similar. Our local zoo has an elephant—also a sad looking one, but in the case of our zoo I think that's because they don't have the funding to properly care for her—and a bunch of smaller monkeys right next to some meerkats. My kids run back and forth between all of them.

How old is your son? It's great that he could enjoy so much.

He is 2 1/2 right now. His behavior has been changing a lot over the past few months. He has basically become a wild beast. But I am finally starting to adjust! Just in time for him to change again.

haha I remember that age. Both my boys also were pretty wild, running around like crazy and so on. Luckily things are fairly safe in Japan so I didn't worry that much letting them run wild outside.

Good luck dealing with it! But also enjoy it all you can, because it goes really quickly. I often miss when my kids were that small.

That is pretty crazy that you have never been there in all your time there. I get what you mean about being spoiled though. My in-laws live right down the road from the Back Hanna zoo in Columbus. That one has spoiled me compared to most of the zoos around us. I am glad that the little one is discovering nature! How fun!

I remember taking my older son to the Cincinnati zoo some years ago. I think it was pretty big compared to the LA one. This one is kind of small, but Ricky seemed to not care much. He was running around like crazy! The hard part is not losing him.

I haven't been to the Columbus zoo before. It's funny, I don't even think I have ever been to Columbus which is kind of crazy since on the map it doesn't even look that far from Dayton.

No, it isn't far at all. Maybe an hour depending on traffic. Getting a season pass sounds like it will be a smart idea for the little one!

Yeah, I meant to go back today, taking advantage of the season pass.. But we ended up getting up too late. That's always the challenge, getting my day organized.

Well it's a beautiful place, I understand why @little-ricky got overjoyed and started running... I'm sure you'll spend a lot of time this summer at the zoo heh heh!

Yeah, if I could get up early enough.. lol! We were supposed to go again today, but I overslept. The zoo closes at 5, but they start putting the animals away at 4.. It takes about an hour to get there, so you have to leave at around noon to really see everything. I really need to fix my schedule. haha!

I'm amused by how you describe @little-ricky's behavior in the zoo; he's definitely enjoying his time.

Nice shot on the Giraffe taking its tongue out, it looks odd and it's really that long. I guess it needs every inch of it for grabbing the top-most part of the tree they munch on in the wild.

Chimps' behavior is always a funny one :D

Yeah I was kind of surprised when I saw it stick its tongue out. I have seen giraffes before, but I guess I never noticed them sticking their tongues out! Crazy.

Common now🤣🤣🤣

And now we come to the most untamed of all the wild animals,

If Ricky could read all the things you write about him, he would be laughing so hard.

I love visiting the zoos, but in my life time I visited twice just because their location is pretty far, I saw lion real for the first time in my life and it was amazing.

The Chimps you saw were really naughty😅😅, thank God you weren't eating at the moment.

The chimps were pretty gross.. It makes me think of how humans would act if there were no rules. It's a scary thought!

Before I moved to California, I think I had been to a zoo like once in my life. Now I have been a lot of times! I think it's because @afturner is super active and likes to do a lot of things.

As far as little Ricky goes, I get the feeling he is going to be laughing a lot when looking back on my blog entries... If he even cares. You know how kids are these days.

I am trying to give him a lot of memories that I didn't get so much as a kid. We were super poor growing up. I have a lot of awful memories from being a kid. I am trying to make it up with my little one! I don't want him to suffer, but I also have to be careful not to spoil him. It may be too late for that. haha!

It's good to see you come back again by showing your cute, cute, and wild children, just like my children too, I think bringing children to the zoo and introducing the animal nature to them is very important in modern times like today,

I have read that they get their coloring from the food that they eat.

It Sounds very interesting to me.

Hey Rick - I missed this one! Too late for voting. But I share it anyway to have it on my wall. Superb photos - particularly loved that one of the giraffe with the long tongue. Had to think about a stupid joke, but I restrain myself from telling it, lol.
If your little Ricky keeps growing like that, soon he will be as tall as you. My sons tower over me, yet they remain the little boys in my mind.
I like to throw back some upvotes, so if you answer me, I can vote on your answer.
