Un año trabajando en la Salud Pública | One year working in Public Health

¡Hola Hivers! Gracias por entrar y leer mi nuevo post. Hace unos días cumplí un año trabajando en la salud pública venezolana y hoy quiero contarles que tal ha sido la experiencia y todas las vivencias que me han pasado a lo largo de estos 12 meses.

Hi Hivers! Thanks for coming in and reading my new post. A few days ago I completed a year working in Venezuelan public health and today I want to tell you how has been the experience and all the experiences that have happened to me throughout these 12 months.

Hace un año estaba en la espera de la entrega de mi título universitario como Odontólogo. Durante ese tiempo no estaba haciendo ninguna actividad, ni ejerciendo mi carrera. Eso me tenía algo desmotivado, ya que sentía la necesidad de hacer algo mientras obtenía mi título. Una tarde recibo una llamada de una colega odontólogo preguntándome si estaba interesado en trabajar en un ambulatorio médico. La verdad me asusté un poco pero le dije que si. Pasaron 20 minutos y recibo una llamada de la coordinadora del centro de salud donde iba a trabajar, les expliqué que aún no tenía mi título pero que tenía una carta de culminación de estudios. Ella me informó que eso no importaba, que podía empezar como ayudante de la otra odontólogo mientras me daban mi título universitario, así aprovechaba ese tiempo de entrenamiento. Así que acepte la propuesta.

A year ago I was waiting for my university degree as a dentist. During that time I was not doing any activity, nor practicing my career. That had me somewhat unmotivated, since I felt the need to do something while I was getting my degree. One afternoon I received a call from a dentist colleague asking me if I was interested in working in a medical clinic. I was a little scared but I said yes. Twenty minutes passed and I received a call from the coordinator of the health center where I was going to work, I explained that I still did not have my degree but I had a letter of completion of studies. She informed me that it didn't matter, that I could start as an assistant to the other dentist while I was getting my university degree, so I could take advantage of that training time. So I accepted the proposal.

Al otro día asistí al centro médico a llevar mis documentos y conocí a la jefa del servicio y a todo el personal, me atendieron súper bien y calmaron un poco mis nervios. El ambulatorio donde iba a trabajar se conoce en Venezuela como un CPT III, ya que ofrece atención médica las 24 horas y especialidades como: ginecología, pediatría, odontología, medicina interna y rayos x. Una de las ventajas de trabajar en este sitio es que está ubicado cerca de mi casa así que fácilmente puedo irme caminando sin ningún problema. Las instalaciones son muy bonitas. Mi lugar de trabajo iba a ser en una unidad móvil que estaba estacionada en ese lugar. Ahí trabajaría de lunes a jueves en el turno de la mañana y también iría a las comunidades indígenas a atender pacientes.

The next day I went to the medical center to bring my documents and met the head of the service and all the staff, they treated me very well and calmed my nerves a little. The ambulatory where I was going to work is known in Venezuela as a CPT III, since it offers 24-hour medical attention and specialties such as: gynecology, pediatrics, dentistry, internal medicine and x-rays. One of the advantages of working at this place is that it is located close to my house so I can easily walk there without any problem. The facilities are very nice. My place of work was going to be in a mobile unit that was parked at that location. I would work there from Monday to Thursday in the morning shift and I would also go to the indigenous communities to see patients.

En mi primer día cómo odontólogo conocí al equipo que me iba a acompañar. Una de ellas era la Odontólogo de la unidad que estudio en mi universidad y la asistente dental que nos iba a ayudar en nuestro día a día. Además una analista que se iba a encargar de citar y organizar a los pacientes, asimismo de llevar las estadísticas. Desde el principio tuve mucho apoyo por partes de mis compañeros de trabajo. Así que me adapté súper rápido. A las pocas semanas de haber empezado a trabajar ahí, recibí mi título universitario y ahora sí pude empezar a tener guardias solo y a atender a pacientes con todas las de la ley. He aprendido muchísimo, cada día es un reto nuevo, una experiencia maravillosa y profesionalmente he crecido muchísimo. Por eso hoy en día agradezco haber aceptado este trabajo ya que me ha dado muchísimo en tan poco tiempo.

On my first day as a dentist I met the team that would accompany me. One of them was the dentist from the unit I studied at my university and the dental assistant who was going to help us in our day-to-day work. There was also an analyst who would be in charge of appointing and organizing the patients, as well as keeping the statistics. From the beginning I had a lot of support from my coworkers. So I adapted very quickly. A few weeks after I started working there, I received my university degree and now I was able to start working alone on call and attending patients with all the legal requirements. I have learned a lot, every day is a new challenge, a wonderful experience and professionally I have grown a lot. That is why today I am grateful for having accepted this job because it has given me so much in such a short time.

Una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras que me ha tocado vivir ha sido asistir a operativos médicos y odontológicos en las comunidades indígenas. El viaje es toda una aventura y me ayudó a conocer nuevos sitios. Además de eso atender y brindar salud a comunidades muy necesitadas. Es triste ver en el abandono en qué se encuentran esos pueblos originarios y el hecho de pensar que con mi trabajo puedo aportar un granito de arena me hace muy feliz. Los días de operativo son muy fuertes y terminamos agotados pero con mucha satisfacción.

One of the most enriching experiences I have had has been to attend medical and dental surgeries in indigenous communities. The trip is an adventure and helped me to get to know new places. In addition to that, I have been able to attend and provide health care to very needy communities. It is sad to see the abandonment in which these native peoples find themselves and the fact of thinking that with my work I can contribute a grain of sand makes me very happy. The days of operation are very hard and we end up exhausted but with a lot of satisfaction.

No todo es color de rosa. Para nadie es un secreto el estado de crisis en el que se encuentra la salud pública en Venezuela. El personal de salud ha sufrido muchos ataques tanto de los pacientes como de las mismas autoridades. Actualmente existen muchas carencias y los sueldos de los profesionales son bajísimos. Realmente este tipo de trabajo se hace por vocación. Así como he tenido experiencias buenas también he tenido negativas aunque muy pocas. Pero aveces los pacientes creen que porque un servicio es gratis les da el derecho de insultar y amedrentar al personal de salud. Sabemos que hay mucha necesidad pero como paciente no puedes saltarte las normas ni los códigos éticos. Aveces quieren amenazarte con denunciarte por no querer hacer lo que ellos te piden, así eso vaya en contra de tu ética profesional, tus criterios y tus principios, eso no lo permitiré. A pesar de todo esto, existe un personal capacitado y muy profesional en nuestras instituciones públicas, que hace hasta lo imposible por ayudar a los pacientes. En mi casa trato de atender a todas las personas que pueda y ayudarlos en todo lo que esté a mi alcance en mi trabajo.

Not everything is rosy. It is no secret that Venezuela's public health system is in a state of crisis. Health personnel have suffered many attacks both from patients and from the authorities themselves. Currently there are many shortages and the salaries of professionals are very low. This type of work is really done by vocation. Just as I have had good experiences, I have also had negative ones, although very few. But sometimes patients believe that because a service is free it gives them the right to insult and intimidate health personnel. We know that there is a lot of need but as a patient you cannot break the rules or ethical codes. Sometimes they want to threaten to denounce you for not wanting to do what they ask you to do, even if it goes against your professional ethics, your criteria and your principles, I will not allow it. In spite of all this, there is a trained and very professional staff in our public institutions, who go to great lengths to help patients. In my house I try to attend to as many people as I can and help them as much as I can in my work.

Son más las cosas buenas que las cosas malas. Está experiencia ha sido súper positiva para mí tanto en lo personal como en lo profesional. Hoy en día tambien trabajo en un consultorio privado pero quiero seguir manteniendo este trabajo en la salud pública. He conocido muchas personas y he hecho mi propia fama cómo odontólogo, gracias a Dios mis pacientes han salido contentos y agradecidos con mi trabajo y eso me motiva a mejorar cada día para brindar una mejor atención y que mi trabajo hable por si sólo.

There are more good things than bad things. This experience has been very positive for me both personally and professionally. Today I also work in a private practice but I want to continue to maintain this work in public health. I have met many people and I have made my own fame as a dentist, thank God my patients have been happy and grateful with my work and that motivates me to improve every day to provide better care and that my work speaks for itself.

No sé cuánto tiempo dure trabajando en la salud pública pero no me arrepiento de todo este tiempo vivido, espero algún día las cosas mejores y podamos avanzar hacia una mejor atención y con mayores especialidades. Creo que lo más importante es ponerle mucha pasión a lo que hacemos, no pensar solo en nosotros y ponernos en loss zapatos de los demás. Mi trabajo es de mucho desgaste emocional pero vale la pena todos los sacrificios. I do not know how long I have been working in public health, but I do not regret all this time I have lived, I hope someday things will get better and we can move towards better care and with more specialties. I think the most important thing is to put a lot of passion into what we do, not to think only about ourselves and to put ourselves in other people's shoes. My job is emotionally demanding but it is worth all the sacrifices.
