A black butterfly

That night we were seven militiamen, swords in hand, standing guard in the upper corridor of the palace and we had her cornered in the highest part of the fort where she had no chance of escaping. A few minutes before the alarms had been activated with the trumpeting of the sentries, when suddenly we saw the woman with long, brunette, dirty and very matted hair appear out of nowhere, mumbling unintelligible phrases between her lips. She was trying to reach the highest tower of the bastion and when she knew she was discovered, she stared at us with an impetuous look, almost giving off fire from her eyes. Then she covered her sepulchral face with a black veil and started to run quickly towards the top of the tower.

Yes, sir judge, I am sure. Of course I am sure that she was the same woman that our King Fornicius had had locked up during the summer in the deepest catacomb of the castle. I will never be able to forget her deep sorrowful eyes. That time when we dragged her by the feet to the cell where she was to be confined, she uttered a string of incoherent words that none of us understood. But even without understanding what that woman was saying, we felt that something was rotting inside us. I do not know how to explain it well, lord magistrate, but her words were like pestilential worms that burrowed inside our bodies and provoked with their slime an uncontrollable scabies, an itch, an itch like poisonous brambles that in the course of many days made us tear off our skin with our fingernails. It was her, yes, of course it was her, sir delegate, it was her, of that I am absolutely sure.

The fact is that that night that I now, fearing God, tell you voluntarily for the holy institution that you represent, under oath to tell the truth, and only the truth of how the events happened, under penalty of eternal damnation of my soul if I lie, that night, I repeat, when we had her surrounded and at our mercy without any possibility of escape, the woman was transformed before our astonished eyes into a big hairy butterfly, jet-haired, big and fat as a fairground pumpkin. One of those hideous butterflies that when they flap their wings bring bad shadows and bad legs, they bring sorrows and cries, they bring misfortunes, misfortunes and death to the place where they are.

We, containing our fear, approached the flaming torches to see if we could conjure that demonic spell because we had to comply with the express orders we had received from the main authorities. But immediately we heard a fluttering that made our blood run cold in our veins. She circled over our bristling heads, and in a second we saw her filter through the crack of a cracked window and fly out, flapping her stinking wings, flying off into the dark night.

The next morning, lord hierarch, when King Fornicio heard of the event, he flew into an uncontrollable rage. He gave enervated shouts to his chamberlains to find out in detail how the event had occurred. He also gave intemperate orders to the obedient priests of the court to bring back, at whatever cost, using any kind of art, obvious or hidden, The black butterfly as we already called her secretly through the sumptuous corridors of the palace.

The king's wrath was merciless. Of the seven militiamen who made the rounds that fateful night, four were declared accomplices of the king's enemies and were thrown headlong into the tenebrous dungeons of torment. In the following nights their heart-rending screams could be heard piercing the walls of the prisons, climbing the ramparts, ascending the towers like ivy and flying away like birds of prey until they gradually disappeared a few leagues beyond the fort. The torture of my former comrades-in-arms was so inhuman that all the peasants and subjects of the kingdom were aware of their mortal lamentations to such an extent that copious gossip gave way to the many chimeras that were conceived about what had happened in the bosom of the castle.

It was said in the public corridors that it was King Fornicius himself who took it upon himself for seven long days and nights, with extravagant instruments of torture, to make them reveal something of which the unhappy prisoners had not the vaguest idea. It was said that the king neither ate nor slept because he himself was a prisoner of a dastardly cruelty that consumed his entrails. Apparently that is what was said at the time, sir of the sacred jury, although I cannot say for sure because I, along with the two other sentries who made the rounds that fateful night in which we saw with our own eyes (which have swallowed the earth) the wonderful metamorphosis from human to animal, I was incommunicado, on bread and water, in the prisons of the rake, for improbable future inquiries. And I was not released until the tumultuous plebs, revolted by horror, disgust and anger, stormed the palace to snatch, with a thousand frenzied hands, from the head of the king turned corpse his crown.

The real truth is that many neighbors assured and still assure, after so many moons have passed, that that woman, Xismena, the elder sister of Fornicio, the first-born who was destined by divine mandate of God and of the earthly laws to become the heir queen, made in her cruel captivity a pact with the evil angel when she learned that Ancor, her father, the old and beloved king, had breathed his last amidst dreadful convulsions some months after Fornicius in his inordinate ambition had taken her prisoner. Yes, I repeat it again and again, illustrious, it is the same woman that in the summer we had made prisoner by express order of the monarch and that died of starvation this winter in the deepest dungeon of the alcazar.

Evil tongues still say that on the very day of her death Xismena wrote with her scanty blood on the walls, "I will eat your monstrous heart, brother Fornicio." Now you are here, lord Inquisitor, accompanied by your venerable retinue, to investigate in detail the events that occurred. Your most high lordship is presiding over this prestigious tribunal in order to find a merciful truth within the impious palace. To dispense the viaticum to the afterlife to the ill-fated King Fornicio, after his personal cohort found him in his balls on the mortuary bed, with a nauseating puddle of blood on his chest, his body full of eruptions, exuding the smell of sulfur, staring with open eyes lifelessly at the dome of his royal chamber where a gigantic black butterfly with red spots flapped its filthy wings, Ave Maria Purisima, a gigantic black butterfly with red spots.
