Margot - A Delicious Delicacy

Margot popularly call Nten in Ibibio - Nigeria, is a sumptous delicacy that is sort after because of it nutritional value. It is gotten from the palm tree that is cut down. The raining period is a time that add advantage to the harvest of this creature.

The essence of cutting down this palm tree is to tap the wine that comes out of it after part of the edge is dug to create a sort of bow-like hole to hold the liquid coming out of it.

After some days of cutting down the palm tree, the rain that pours on it fast-track the formation of the margot in the tree. To get the margot out therefore, you need to cut an opening with a machette or an axe. Depending on the numbers of days or week the palm tree is down, the margot develop gradually, sometimes they got matured and metamorphous into another winglike insect and flew out.

At Ntak Iyang
Here I visited a friend at his residence in the outskirt of Uyo, behind Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation, Ntak Inyang, Calabar Itu Highway, together with another friend, we headlong into the descending valley where he had previously cut down the palm tree and have started harvesting the palm wine for his personal use.

The sloppy track was sleepy hence we have to follow the lead of the master and navigate as he does, otherwise, we miss the track and fall.

On getting to the spot, firstly he went to one of the tree he has already prepare and have been scooping out the wine, he open the dug out hole and with a cup he began to scoop out the palm wine into a container that he took along, after which he empty it into plastic bottle, cover the bottle and lower it into the running track of the stream for it to chill. You can imagine the local way of refrigerating a wine!

We then move to the next fallen palm tree, and he began cutting, as he cut downward the margot were notice as they began to look for a way to escape, he pick and drop into the container, he even threw some into his mouth and eat it raw.

After we were done with harvesting some of it, we gathered few firewood to use for the cooking, we then retrieve the chilled wine from the running track of the stream and return back to his house.

On getting back, we prepare the margot, add spices to it, and before you knew what was happening, it was already producing irresistible aroma, it was as if I should even start eating it on the fire but I have to exercise a bit of patience for it to be done and ready.

With the !wine in one hand, we sat and began to enjoy the sweetness of nature gift in varieties of ways. As it descent down my throat into my stomach, I feel as if it should not finish. How I wish you have a taste of it, because there is a saying that 'the taste of the budding is in the eating.' I most say, I enjoy the meal alongside the sweeten palm wine.

If you ask me, I will say, glory be to the maker and giver of life, who in his infinite wisdom makes everything wonderful.

I am sure you have such in your area, please find time to explore and enjoy these God gift - margot and palm-wine direct from the source to tour stomach.

Oh, I know that margot! There are some places here in my country that also eats that. It belongs to exotic food.
Though I haven't tried yet.

We don't have palm wine, but coconut wine instead.
