Age is just a number and has nothing to do with maturity.

Hello, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learner's featured post. Happy new month, everyone, and welcome to the month of May. The year is slowly coming to an end, and many procrastinators think there is still time, but they don't have much time left and need to start pursuing their goals. Seeing the topic for this prompt, I know we will all have our different views about age and maturity. Becoming an adult or adding age does not really make one act, behave, or even look mature. Sometimes, when you see older people do things, they just help validate the idea that age is just a number and has nothing to do with maturity. Definitely, there are people that got matured over time, as well as there are people that were given enough time but never got matured; they added age, but the maturity did not come.

The legal age of adulthood varies from one country to another, but in most countries, the legal age of adulthood is 18 years. Even in my country, at the age of 18, you are now considered an adult and are now given certain rights you did not have before attaining that age. At 18, you will be allowed to vote as well as own a driver's license. Even in terms of punishment for breaking the law, at 18, you are no longer considered a juvenile but an adult, and if you break the law at that age, they punish you like the adult that you are.

18 years as the legal age for adulthood is okay with me; it is neither too early nor too late. At the age of 18, one should be able to differentiate their left from their right, know the right things to indulge in and the wrong things to do away with, and not disturb the peace of other citizens. A child at 18 is no longer allowed to be registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the barracks where we live; they are now considered adults and can actually pay for their drugs. This is bad, and I don't support the idea, but this alone gives you the awareness you need to know that it is time to set your life on course with every decision you make.

Maturity does not come with age; if you move on the streets every day, you come across adults, who make you believe strongly that age and maturity do not always come as one package. Sometimes the age comes without maturity; you see adults reacting in a way you least expect them to. For me, I'd say maturity is your ability to handle a situation in a way that is expected of you as an adult; mature looks are just an extra that comes with maturity. In most cases, it does not really count. We all have seen people look older than their age. While I was a high school student, I had a classmate with gray hair who looked really older than her age, and at the same time, we have people who look a lot younger than their age, so in most cases, looks don't count; all that matters is how you handle and react to situations.

For me, age will always be just a number, as no specific age can really spell out maturity. Your ability to take up responsibility as it is expected of you, your ability to handle a situation as it is expected, also do you react to situations in the right manner? All these things are what define maturity for me, not age.

Your writing beautifully highlights the distinction between someone's age and maturity. I'd be glad to know what you think of the norms of society that thinks everyone gets mature after 18, what is some of them not possess that even after 18?

We often need changes to mature, usually when we reach 18 years old, we know that our responsibilities increase
