Life of a student: Today we are eating well, and tomorrow is another story.

Hello, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. As students with quite low incomes, our feeding does not follow a single pattern; today you are eating well, and then tomorrow you are just eating to survive and not because you like what is put before you. There are days when we are up and we eat quite expensively, and when we are low, we switch to survival mode.

We have different categories of people: those who eat a lot and those who just eat a few spoons and are filled. I fall into the category of those who should be called foodies, but a friend of mine will always say you will only call yourself a foodie when you are not the one buying the food. If you buy food here at school, you'll understand the statement better.

We all have high taste and want to eat well all the time. The truth is, we can only eat well when we have the money to afford it. Eating good 24/7 requires a lot from one's purse, and if your finances cannot afford such, then you shouldn't do it always but instead once in a while or occasionally just so you don't go broke trying to eat good.

Reading through this week's prompt, the days where I was at my lowest started to run through my mind, and trust me, I have eaten a lot of cheap foods, but one stands out for me. Have you all had of "MTN rice"? If you haven't, then I doubt if you have eaten any cheap food at all. MTN rice is prepared using red oil since one cannot afford tomato paste at the moment, so we make use of what we have at our disposal.

That day, it was prepared just plain with the necessary ingredients, like salt, Maggi seasoning, red oil, and pepper. These were the only ingredients added to my MTN rice that day; it was prepared without so much stress. It can be prepared better, but then I had no money to spend, so I just prepared what I could in order to survive. We all had days like this in school. Unless you had a steady flow of income, that's the only way you could escape days like this.

  • How about one of the most expensive foods I have eaten?

The same way we have low days, we also have days where we eat only what we crave. On several occasions, I was opportuned to eat well and satisfy my cravings, and I am always grateful for days like this. On this particular day, I decided to order food from a vendor nearby, which took very long to be delivered, but the wait was worth it. I ordered rice with veggies and chicken to help recover all that I have lost running around to get school stuff done.

I also bought a soft drink to make it a round figure; on a single meal, I spent about 5,000 naira ($5). It was quite expensive for a student like myself, but once in a while, we ought to eat well at least. A friend of mine still uses it against me when we are low. You always hear him say I used money for a pot of soup to order rice, which was not even much 😂.

Thanks for reading my post.

It's funny because that money could cook a pot of soup for you as a student but sometimes we need to satisfy our cravings just like you said.

MTN rice is sometimes very delicious especially when you are very hungry 😁

MTN rice is like garri to me oo, I don't like garri so when I am broke instead of garri or cassava flakes I go for my MTN rice.

It is the first time hearing the name MTN rice but it's relatable after your explanation because I have eaten palm oil rice a lot of them.

Life as a student is a whole different case when it comes to food and I believe the amount spend on food doesn't make it healthy or nutritious. Well done man, I enjoyed your post.
