School back in the day vs. school now: the difference is clear.

Hello, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. On this side of the world, as the world continues to evolve, our educational standard continues to drop instead of evolving with the world. It's really disheartening when we look back and see how schooling was back in the day and what it is now. With every passing day, our educational standard drops by a very high percentage. These days, students don't need to stress too much in order to pass; once you know the back door, you are good to go.

When we go way back in time, everything was based on merit, and if you don't merit it, then you won't get it. Then students were encouraged to work very hard so as to enable them to be among the best and earn themselves the reward that comes with hard work. I have an uncle who now works abroad as a nurse. His parents had nothing, but scholarship paved the way for him, and despite not having anyone to speak to or fight for him, he was given what was rightfully his. Today, gone are the days when rewards in schools were given based on merit. Today, money buys everything in school, and hardworking students are discouraged because, after all the hard work, those who pay for it are the ones to receive it.

When we go way back before corruption eroded our educational system, whatever a student gets is based on merit and not on godfatherism or money. In 2010, I wrote a scholarship exam. The results were out, and I did well, but I was not offered the scholarship despite the fact that my name was on the list. The men in charge were asking my parents to pay a huge sum of money since the scholarship had to do with studying in Turkey and they could not go let be based on merit. Since my parents couldn't afford such an amount, these men sold my slot to the highest bidder.

It was heartbreaking and discouraging. In schools today, why will a student even want to read when their reward for working so hard is taken away right before their very eyes because they have no money to pay or no godfather to speak on their behalf? Those days, awards and results were based on merit, not what we have today, and students worked hard to earn them, not what we have today. Those days, the streets were flooded with graduates who could defend their results, but today, the streets are flooded with students who cannot defend the paper they carry.

One thing students of this generation enjoy.

Currently, there are lots of benefits that come with being a student compared to the olden days. Students now have technology to help them carry out research. I doubt if there is any knowledge a student needs that is not on YouTube, but the students of those days did not have access to all this. Now, as a student, you can carry out research from the comfort of your house, but back in the day, you must visit a library or a cyber cafe before you can carry out any research. Students of this generation enjoy technology to the fullest, while students back in the day got little or nothing. Technology has made everything easier.
