Adiós It Has Been a Good Run
It all started in November, 2015. I had been reading and watching YouTube videos about this cool new type of camera: Mirrorless! In previous DSLR cameras, there is a mirror that reflects the image onto the sensor. This means DSLR cameras by nature are larger and heavier than their mirrorless counterparts. I thought that was a cool deal that might just work as a vlogging camera. I had always wanted to get into photography and I was already putting videos on YouTube, so I took the plunge....
I need to clean her up. Between filming plenty of messy cooking videos and being used in the field, she just aint as purdy as she once was.
I decided on the Panasonic Lumix G7 as it was one of the first mirrorless offerings. It was not a high end model, but it was quite advanced shooting 4k in 2015. I really fell in love with this little camera, as well as with photography as well.
This was our first video train wreck we filmed with the G7. Of course Ben was about as unhelpful as he is today lol.

The plan we are thinking about is to sell all of our old cameras and kit and put that towards a Sony a7 iv with just a kit lens to start.
I suppose I am going to sell my 30mm Panasonic Macro lens.
I enjoyed using it for some close in shots like these potato eyes.
No need to keep my 25mm 1.4 lens.
I really will miss how that 1.4 could really give a shallow depth of field and blow out the background!
Most camera places will purchase you old kit. Yes you can do much better selling on Facebook Marketplace, but then you have to deal with the tire kickers that only want a steal or the people fooling around with your stuff for ages only to decide they will keep looking.
Of course, one expects to take a bit of a hit on the price. This is the one that will really hurt. I loved the Canon 100-400mm.
It really reaches out and brings distant items near!
The Sony A7 iv would be able to shoot 60 fps in 4k. I really would like to get into shooting some stock videos. Well I know it sounds crazy to trade in so much kit just for a new camera with a kit lens. The problem with the Canon 80d is that it doesn't shoot 4k at all! I really need to keep the 100-400, but I don't see how. Such dilemmas!

Kind of reminds me of back in the day when PC's were obsolete about every other year lol. I had a 286, 386, 486, Pentium, and the changes were amazing!

Ohhh I would have such a hard time to get rid of the Canon 100-400mm (If I was a Canon owner). You could maybe just get adapter for the future Sony... and learn how to shoot with manual focus.

That is really an idea. I honestly am not a fan boy of either brands like some guys are. The silver lining about Sony is the inexpensive glass available from third parties. So in essence if you look at the big picture, the savings from buying some third party glass makes Sony the least expensive in a way. For example the Sigma 100-400 for the Sony say is $1000 where the Canon 100-400 is more than double that!!!

That is a difference! I actually thought lenses for Sony as expensive. But then again I have zero experience with Canons or shooting videos. I jumped from bridge Lumix to Nikon and later we also got Sony a7 (and we don't have a single Sony lens, just old manuals), but it is all for photos.

Oh for sure. I find the phone excellent for blogging. Just when you want to sell clips/pics, the full frame camera is hard to beat.

The minute you mention mirrorless the money starts emptying from your pockets. I was looking around at one point and those prices boggle the mind. The gap in price between dslr and mirrorless is appealing right now especially if you're brave enough to hit the secondhand market as a buyer. As a seller, it's always a nightmare no matter what you're trying to sell.
Like everything else, use it and enjoy it while you can. I don't want to think of all the depreciating items around me at the moment haha
Totally agree. As a rule I am more of a cheapass than a spender. However, I am glad to say whatever, I do buy, I really use it a lot!

I know how you hate to let things go too, so you must really believe the other camera will do a superior job.

Your photos are already awesome! It would be interesting to see photos you take with a different camera.
Money is really the factor that made me decide not to buy a new one when my camera broke down. It is really an expensive hobby :D :D

I had the Panasonic G7 since 2015. It uses their Contrast Detection for focus which was horrible for vlogging. Basically always had to shoot video in manual.
The Canons are good choices. I am on the fence with the Canon EOS R so I can keep the Canon 100-400mm. However, the glass for the Sony line are cheaper than the Canon when you consider the third party offerings.
It is a tough decision because video is over 50% of what I do.
