Getting Away Is Fun But Not Cheap!

Ever since moving to Virginia, I vowed that I would spend some time traveling around the state getting to know it. To me, this doesn't mean extensive vacations, rather simply short overnight jaunts. So when I saw an advertisement for a FREE concert that was not too far away but sounded interesting, I thought it would be worth the two and a half hour drive to check it out.

It should be well noted that the OldGuy is basically cheap and patriotic. I like to stretch a dollar as far as I can; and when I get cut I bleed red, white, and blue. I thought the opportunity to see the United States Navy Sea Chanters would tick both boxes for me.

Although the tickets were free, food and lodging is still an expense. Of course these days it is not a small expense, yet they say one only lives once so what the hell, may as well spend some cash.

They were going to be in concert at the historic Lincoln Theater in Marion Virginia.

Once inside the theater, it is impossible to miss seeing the massive canvas paintings (three on each side) depicting historical events in our nation's history.

One prominent Virginian, albeit lately controversial, figure is featured...

Now on to the United States Navy Band Sea Chanters

We were told by the band leader that the Navy Sea chanters were originally commissioned by Admiral Arleigh Burke in the 1950s as an all male choir.

Of course nowadays the ladies are an important part of the picture !!!

I am happy to report that not only was the theater full of people, but also their voices filled the entire auditorium. It was a truly enjoyable evening.

Wow, nice venue for a free concert. Not a big place and expected it to be full.
Glad you got there early enough. Otherwise, the 2 hours drive will be for nothing.
