I have not been much of a fan of Nigerian movies. And that has kept me in the dark about the latest developments in them. But, after watching Blood Sisters, a Nigerian thriller series, my attention has been drawn to the film industry in my country; you can read my review of Blood Sisters here.

My main reason for not being interested in films from my home country is the lack of quality in many of the previous works I saw. And it spanned across acting, storytelling, and cinematography. But over the years, a lot of drastic changes have taken place, and I have now become a big fan of Nigerian movies once again.

Back to why we are here.
Breaded Life had been released over a year before I even heard of it; and that was just last week. It was not in any way that I could have anticipated. I mean, what am I really supposed to think about with a title like "Breaded Life?" I clicked play and from the beginning till the end I was glued to the screen like I had never seen bread before.

I assure you, the movie is not centered on bread, in case you had begun to think so. Now, without further ado, journey with me as we discuss Breaded Life.

Sunmi is a spoiled son who comes from a wealthy home. His father is deceased, and his only older sister, Lara, is married and stays with her husband overseas.

In a luxurious home with his mother, a maidservant, and the gatekeeper, and all of his needs catered for, he sees no relevance to being responsible by getting a job and giving his life some direction. His irresponsibility leads him to lead an arrogant lifestyle full of pleasure and money squandering.

Contrary to his lifestyle, Lara is a well-groomed woman and a successful one at that in a beautiful marriage. And every day, he leaves his mother heartbroken about his life and where it's headed.

The day then comes when everybody that knows him begin to act like they had never met him before. He is now left to himself with nothing. Life flips on its side for him and becomes difficult.

He meets Todowode, a bread-vendor, and she takes him in. She goes out of her way many times for him, and as time goes by, his character begins to change for the better.

𝕄𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊 & 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ

As said earlier, I had zero expectations and I didn't even know what to anticipate. You could sometimes tell a lot about Nigerian films right from their titles, but lately, that has not been the case in the film industry.

k75bsZMwYNu2L3iBMXq5y7xeiy1isFJsZxnMZSXuXEsxe4ee1cUkGyPif8ef4kj4QugGRfH1g84Lk487p9h5EcreGRw4Kg2pVGzmNMVDSxr9hd1ZhngMNXA41SeqAr6thjvtWg2S9iyFtc6d5UphXuoZwQmp5F8PY.png

The movie depicts clearly how frustrated a mother can get with a child that is out of line. To bring up two children and one turns out to be wayward and irresponsible is something that can really baffle and worry parents.

It does really well to teach that one should never take whatever one has, especially if it is in abundance, for granted. As Sunmi saw that all his father left for him was enough for many years to come, he could not see any reason to work. But what would he then leave for his own kids?

I must say, I have not had so many laughs in a long time as I did in this movie. I was only a few minutes in and I had already started cracking up. As the movie was intended, the majority of the scenes used comic elements to keep the audience engaged.

But to really do justice with this review, let us get into some specifics of the film.

sᴛᴏʀʏʟɪɴᴇ

The story was pretty straightforward. It's just a story of a kid that learns life-lessons in a really hard way, and with the help of a lady, he survives.

But as simple as it is, it is quite easy to flop. As some movie writers may fear that it may be oversimplified, they end up bringing in inconsistencies and getting the audience in the middle of it. But to make up for its simplicity, the comic elements gave life to the film.

At a point, I began to feel like there was some form of inconsistency in the film, but I was hoping there would be a reasonable explanation as to how it came about. And voila, it all made sense in the end.

ᴄɪɴᴇᴍᴀᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ

This is an aspect that I really appreciate. It's not like it was dramatic as you would have in a thriller film. But it is the attention to details that is superb.

The quality of effort put into this film is incredible, if you ask me.

sᴏᴜɴᴅ

As important as the visuals are, the sound in a film plays a very important role in making the audience feel the film.

All of the songs used in the movie were all Nigerian songs. And I loved every song used in the movie. My favourite is "Sise" by Femi Leye.

ᴀᴄᴛɪɴɢ

Once again, I am super proud of Nigerians. That's a lot of effort that was put into this movie.

I must commend Timini Egbuson (Sunmi) for an outstanding performance. There was not a time where I felt like he was acting. He was basically perfect for the role.

Bimbo Ademoye (Todowede). She is a absolute powerhouse of talent. She had to use a type of Nigerian Yoruba accent that I do not think is her's, and that's now easy to work with.

And to MC McLively (Iskilu), he was a source of comedy. He added life to the film.

k75bsZMwYNu2L3iBMXq5y7xeiy1isFJsZxnMZSXuXEsxe4ee1cUkGyPif8ef4kj4QubNTwLseV2NZbTNZy6P1qxReUd94FRyJmM99siQsM52fx8YNAGPHDwg2P1ZKhzNwpTiVgCeFR8rLuRef3rJMZgnXrchSic6a.png

𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊...

This was an excellent movie with equality efforts put into it. It adds to the confirmation that the Nigerian film industry is taking big steps to reach the world.

Breaded Life is the kind of movie I would love to see to cool off from the day's stress.

I would rate the movie at 8.5/10

I was shocked at Timini's acting. This is the best I've ever seen him in a movie. Like you said, there was never a moment he wasn't acting. Bimbo Ademoye is a good actress as always and she killed her role. I read that she had to learn the Egun language for this movie and people said she spoke it really well.

It's a weird story and I was about cussing it out some minutes in but when I deeped the whole thing I was like, ohhh...this isn't bad at all.

It was my first time seeing Timini acting and I totally loved it; he was so natural.

Bimbo is an excellent actress. I went on learn more about her and found some other of her works. She's the complete opposite if Todowede in the film, yet she nailed it.

It must have really challenging for her to learn and use the Egun Yoruba accent because she is very fluent with the conventional one.

I too wasn't feeling so much vibes from the movie, other than MC Lively's performance. But eventually, I loved every moment of the movie.

Thanks for stopping by, @wolfofnostreet.
Greetings!
