MOVIE REVIEW: The Guilty || Broken People Save Broken People [ENG-ESP]

The Guilty is a 2021 American crime thriller film, directed by Antoine Fuqua. It is actually a remake of the Danish movie of the same name, released in 2018. I only found out about the Danish one just after I had finished with the film. And I must say, it is not a film that you could normally imagine it to be.

It is not every trailer of a movie that can actually do the job of making the viewer want to see it. Sometimes, the trailer could even be a big turn off. But when I saw the trailer for The Guilty, I was intrigued by what was happening.

I have always had a curiosity about the things that go on when one dials 911 and the types of calls they receive. And many times, the calls they receive are false alarms, so I have also wondered how they work with them and deal with them. So seeing them display something like that in the trailer made me jump for the actual movie.

And on finishing the film, I knew that I was definitely going to talk about this one. Because my entire expression at the end of the film was "Wow," if I could describe it. The movie is something I would term "unusual," and that is for the reason that the movie went with something that I had not commonly seen done in films before. But before I really begin the review, let me tell you a little bit about the movie:

𝔸𝔹𝕆𝕌𝕋 𝕋ℍ𝔼 𝕄𝕆𝕍𝕀𝔼

Joe Baylor is an LAPD officer that has recently been demoted to the call desk due to an incident that happened eight months ago. He is now awaiting a court hearing. Since the incident, he has been troubled, and the date of the court hearing drawing nearer only makes him worse by the day.

The court hearing is now the next day, and he is working the night shift. He goes about his regular duties that night, picking up calls to 911 and responding to callers' emergencies. He then answers this one call from a woman who speaks with him in a manner as though she were speaking with a child.

At first, Joe takes it to be a mistake and that the lady is probably high on some substance. On the verge of dropping the call, he realises that she was trying to reveal that she had been abducted. The situation then begins to present itself as a serious matter.

As the call progresses, he tries to gather enough information about her location and other information needed to help the police handle her situation. But that proved difficult by the minute. But he does know that they are in a moving white van, she and her abductor, on a highway on the outskirts of the city.

She is in grave danger, but there is only a very small amount of information available to help her. The city is in terrible shape with fires everywhere and there are practically not many people outside that could help. Joe now has to pull all the strings he can to save her. Throughout it all, he struggles with his health, which causes him to "lose track of time," as well as his desire to speak with his daughter, with whom he hasn't spoken in months. All this at 2AM.

How is Joe going to save Emily from her abductor over the phone? As the story progresses, it turns out that "things are not always as they seem," and a whole lot of drama ensues.

𝕄𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊 & 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ

This film was shot during the pandemic. And the pandemic made filmmaking extremely difficult at that time. There was the lockdown that practically made it impossible for them to use actual locations, and the actors could not really do their job.

So you can imagine how little the directors and producers would have had to work with. And I can remember how this was so much of an issue then because there were fewer and fewer films released that year and those under production had to be delayed a year or two. But this film is one of the films that managed to achieve a lot with the little they had.

The film basically centers on a period in a man's life where he was going through one of his most difficult times. A time that we can all relate to. He simply made a mistake (well, not actually so simple) and his life has been plummeting ever since. But in the middle of his tribulations, he is faced with a challenge. A challenge that puts the life of a stranger right in his hands, and how he handles the situation determines the fate of the woman. But even in his attempt, he still makes mistakes—which basically tells us how human we all are.

It was until the end of the movie that I got to really understand how the movie's title was related to the actual storyline of the film. For most parts of the film, I said to myself, "So how exactly does the title relate to what I am seeing?" And this was not for the reason that it looked like it was doing badly. I was feeling the film, but I really could not wrap my head around how the whole title and story were tied together, not until the ending.

Let's discuss some specific areas to deliver this review:

What makes the story "unusual" is that the whole thing took place in a dispatch room. The story was told, but the film uses the imaginative power of the audience's mind to relay the details. I felt like I was being told a story and the things I was seeing with my eyes, Joe's expressions and reactions, the dispatch room and all its activities, were just to enunciate the story. Heck, there were only two places shown; the common dispatch room and the executive one. But that did not even make the story boring in any way.

Who would know that you could use just one room to tell a whole story? I'm just kidding. Everybody knows you can use one room and still deliver a great story; it just depends on how you execute it.

There are twists and turns, but not in the way that is so pronounced. They were very subtle, but they were very crucial in effectively relaying the story. As the story unwrapped itself, layer by layer, it was rather satisfyingly exhausting. If you can picture what I mean, you should get my point.

There's practically just one actor in this film. Surely, there were others too (other than extras), but they were voiced talking to Joe. And before I talk about Jake Gyllenhael (Joe), I need to give rounds of applause to the voice actors.

The distinctive voices that were speaking with Jake in the film were just superb. Because that's the only thing those actors had in order to sell their characters in the film. If you're trying to make me (the audience) know that your character is dying, and I cannot see it, you have to make me believe it by hearing it.

Then Jake, the lead actor, has the biggest role to play (obviously), and he absolutely nails it. He touched down on every detail we needed to grasp the kind of man Joe is alongside portraying the situation.

I have not seen the original movie, the Danish one, but I can tell from this remake that it would have gone well also.

The movie is one that I would have considered seeing had I known it would go this well. It was well worth a look.

I would give the movie a rating of 𝟟/𝟙𝟘.

The Guilty es una película estadounidense de 2021 de suspense criminal, dirigida por Antoine Fuqua. En realidad es un remake de la película danesa del mismo nombre, estrenada en 2018. Me enteré de la danesa justo después de terminar con la película. Y debo decir que no es una película que se pueda imaginar normalmente.

No todos los tráileres de una película consiguen realmente hacer que el espectador quiera verla. A veces, el tráiler puede incluso desanimar al espectador. Pero cuando vi el tráiler de The Guilty, me quedé intrigado por lo que ocurría.

Siempre he tenido curiosidad por lo que ocurre cuando uno marca el 911 y el tipo de llamadas que reciben. Y muchas veces, las llamadas que reciben son falsas alarmas, por lo que también me he preguntado cómo trabajan con ellas y las tratan. Así que ver que muestran algo así en el tráiler me hizo saltar a la película real.

Y al terminar la película, supe que definitivamente iba a hablar de ésta. Porque toda mi expresión al final de la película fue "Guau", si pudiera describirlo. La película es algo que llamaría "inusual", y eso es por la razón de que la película fue con algo que no había visto comúnmente hecho en las películas antes. Pero antes de empezar la crítica, déjenme contarles un poco sobre la película:

Joe Baylor es un agente de la policía de Los Ángeles que recientemente ha sido degradado a la recepción de llamadas debido a un incidente ocurrido hace ocho meses. Ahora está a la espera de una vista judicial. Desde el incidente, ha estado preocupado, y la fecha de la audiencia judicial que se acerca sólo lo pone peor cada día.

Al principio, Joe considera que se trata de un error y que la mujer probablemente esté drogada con alguna sustancia. A punto de abandonar la llamada, se da cuenta de que ella estaba tratando de revelar que había sido secuestrada. La situación comienza entonces a presentarse como un asunto serio.

A medida que la llamada avanza, intenta reunir suficiente información sobre su ubicación y otros datos necesarios para ayudar a la policía a manejar su situación. Pero eso resulta difícil por momentos. Pero sí sabe que están en una furgoneta blanca en movimiento, ella y su secuestrador, en una autopista en las afueras de la ciudad.

Ella está en grave peligro, pero sólo se dispone de muy poca información para ayudarla. La ciudad está en un estado terrible, con incendios por todas partes, y prácticamente no hay mucha gente fuera que pueda ayudar. Joe tiene que mover todos los hilos posibles para salvarla. A lo largo de todo esto, lucha con su salud, que le hace "perder la noción del tiempo", así como con su deseo de hablar con su hija, con la que no ha hablado en meses. Todo esto a las 2 de la madrugada.

Cómo va a salvar Joe a Emily de su secuestrador por teléfono? A medida que avanza la historia, resulta que "las cosas no son siempre lo que parecen", y se produce todo un drama.

𝕄𝕀𝕊 ℙ𝔼ℕ𝕊𝔸𝕄𝕀𝔼ℕ𝕋𝕆𝕊 𝕐 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ

Esta película se rodó durante la pandemia. Y la pandemia hizo que el rodaje fuera extremadamente difícil en esa época. Estaba el bloqueo que prácticamente impedía utilizar localizaciones reales, y los actores no podían hacer realmente su trabajo.

Así que puedes imaginar lo poco que tenían que trabajar los directores y productores. Y puedo recordar cómo esto era un problema entonces porque cada vez se estrenaban menos películas ese año y las que estaban en producción tenían que retrasarse un año o dos. Pero esta película es una de las que consiguieron mucho con lo poco que tenían.

La película se centra básicamente en un periodo de la vida de un hombre que atraviesa uno de sus momentos más difíciles. Un momento con el que todos podemos identificarnos. Simplemente cometió un error (bueno, en realidad no es tan sencillo) y su vida cayó en picado desde entonces. Pero en medio de sus tribulaciones, se enfrenta a un reto. Un desafío que pone la vida de una desconocida en sus manos, y la forma en que maneja la situación determina el destino de la mujer. Pero incluso en su intento, sigue cometiendo errores, lo que básicamente nos dice lo humanos que somos todos.

No fue hasta el final de la película cuando entendí realmente cómo el título de la película estaba relacionado con el argumento real de la misma. Durante la mayor parte de la película, me dije: "¿Cómo se relaciona exactamente el título con lo que estoy viendo?". Y esto no era por la razón de que pareciera que lo estaba haciendo mal. Sentía la película, pero no podía entender cómo se relacionaban el título y la historia, no hasta el final.

Hablemos de algunas áreas específicas para entregar esta crítica:

Lo que hace que la historia sea "inusual" es que todo tuvo lugar en una sala de despacho. La historia fue contada, pero la película utiliza el poder imaginativo de la mente del público para transmitir los detalles. Sentí que me estaban contando una historia y que las cosas que veía con mis ojos, las expresiones y reacciones de Joe, la sala de despacho y todas sus actividades, eran sólo para enunciar la historia. Por cierto, sólo se mostraban dos lugares: la sala de despacho común y la ejecutiva. Pero eso no hacía que la historia fuera aburrida de ninguna manera.

Quién diría que se puede utilizar una sola habitación para contar toda una historia? Sólo estoy bromeando. Todo el mundo sabe que se puede utilizar una sola habitación y seguir contando una gran historia; sólo depende de cómo se ejecute.

Hay giros y vueltas, pero no de forma tan pronunciada. Fueron muy sutiles, pero resultaron cruciales para transmitir la historia con eficacia. A medida que la historia se iba desenvolviendo, capa a capa, resultaba bastante satisfactoria. Si puedes imaginarte lo que quiero decir, deberías entender lo que quiero decir.

Prácticamente sólo hay un actor en esta película. Seguramente también había otros (aparte de los extras), pero se les ponía voz hablando con Joe. Y antes de hablar de Jake Gyllenhael (Joe), tengo que dar un aplauso a los actores de voz.

Las voces distintivas que hablaban con Jake en la película eran simplemente magníficas. Porque eso es lo único que tenían esos actores para vender sus personajes en la película. Si intentas que yo (el público) sepa que tu personaje se está muriendo, y no puedo verlo, tienes que hacérmelo creer oyéndolo.

Entonces Jake, el actor principal, tiene el papel más importante (obviamente), y lo clava absolutamente. Tocó todos los detalles que necesitábamos para captar el tipo de hombre que es Joe junto con el retrato de la situación.

No he visto la película original, la danesa, pero puedo decir por este remake que también hubiera salido bien.

La película es una de las que me habría planteado ver de haber sabido que iba a salir así de bien. Merece la pena verla.

Le daría a la película una calificación de 𝟟/𝟙𝟘.
