Perspective Makes All the Difference || Teaching Physics

(Edited)

High school students find certain subjects challenging, depending on their perspective on the subjects, and the majority of them seem to be the technical ones like mathematics and physics. If I were to be a teacher, I would choose physics because I know exactly what it's like to not seem to get it and just how to go about it.

20230227_060702_0000.jpg

In my first year as an engineering student at the university, I never had to study for the tests and examinations in order to do well in Physics. It sort of came naturally to me. However, the person I was at that time was the complete opposite of who I was a couple of years before. I was a total noob in that subject when I was in high school. Something happened between those two points in time.

You see, before I got into the university, I was a less-than-average student in high school. I was never the brightest student. It wasn't a thing to think about me whenever you needed help with a certain subject in school—any subject, in fact. But then I got to the verge of being thrown out of school for my steady decline in my academics. It was a threat to my ego, and that was the spark for something new.

I knew that if I didn't keep up with my academics, from the time I was in my penultimate year of high school, I was going to perform woefully in the examinations for admission into the university, and even if I did manage through, it would extend into my academic life, and that wouldn't go well for me. These thoughts pushed me into wanting to make a change, and I started to study for my life.

education-6115230_1920.jpg

I began to read more than most of my colleagues. I found it difficult at first, but my determination to change my academic lifestyle gave me the drive to forge ahead. And with time, I read a whole lot more than most of my colleagues. The main subjects of concentration were physics and chemistry.

I studied so hard, practiced problems so often, asked a lot of questions that may have seemed silly to my colleagues—and got my answers, thanks to the understanding teachers—and hung out more with intelligent students that eventually became my friends. This turned me into a bookie, and in no time, I had mastered physics to the point where it was second nature to me—at least at my level.

Often times, students don't "like" physics because of their cognitive bias that it is difficult. They don't see the bigger picture, which is that physics is something they see every day. Let's take the following as examples:

  • Gravity: In the back of our minds, we can predict how much of an impact a collision of an object with the floor will have based on the conditions surrounding that event and the damage it will cause. That is, if your mobile phone were to fall from a very small distance, we would naturally know that this would have less impact in comparison with a much higher distance.

  • Electricity: We all know that the electric current that we actually use to charge our mobile phones, like with power banks, is much different from the ones we use for our blenders in that the latter (alternating current) can potentially electrocute one as opposed to the former (direct current).

lens-490806_1920.jpg

  • Optics: We use optics to correct our vision with eyeglasses and contact lenses, to take photographs with cameras, and to watch movies on a screen. It's part of our everyday use of technology, basically.

  • Motion: Every time we move, there are certain laws guiding the way we perceive our environment and how we physically interact with it.

I can go on and on about how important physics is in our everyday lives and how it really isn't as difficult as many people perceive it to be, but we'll save that for if I do get to teach physics someday. Simply having an open mind and the willingness to learn physics is the basic requirement for understanding the theories behind our interactions with the universe.

Physics is fun for me, and because I know what it's like to find it challenging at first, it is something that I can efficiently teach high school students. I have spent reasonable time understanding it, so it shouldn't be a hassle relaying that knowledge in a simplified manner.

Physics!!
Found it very challenging until after high school when my big bro taught me. Heck! Right now?!
It's all easy-peasy. The very subject that came to mind when I saw this selection is Physics. It's very much exciting.
You made a good choice.
Nice writing too.
Well-done!

I wish I had your big-bro much earlier. I might have started doing well in it earlier on.

I'm curious, what do you study in school now?

Thank you for your kind words.

At least, you are good in it now.

I'm curious, what do you study in school now?

Medical laboratory technology.

Physics, I remembered escaping a D in my promotional exam for SS2. We had a female physics teacher back then and she was too strict to the extent that many of us hated the subject because of her.

She got married and a new teacher came and I got a different interest in physics even though I didn't turn out to be very good in it.

With your understanding about Physics, I believe you will make a good physics teachers and your cute face will even make students relax to learn.

It still baffles me why many math and physics teacher love to be seen as a wicked teacher, those people too get wahala

I can't even count how many times I got F and E in physics when I was in secondary school. It, along with Math, were like plagues to my results then. Damn...

I think some people are just naturally bad with life that they can't even teach well. Why bother to teach if your students are going to be having even more difficulties.

The physics teacher I had then in secondary school was just too terrible a teacher, and boring too. I had a different one, Mr. Oyewole, take me special lessons on it. Mr. Oyewole is part how I came to love physics. He just wasn't the main teacher.

I don't think I have heard the word "cuteness" before. What is that?😂

Lolz, don't mind me. I actually meant cute face and I think you will very good to take the subject.

Many students hating/failing physics starts with the teachers approach to teaching the subject and if many of them can work on their attitude, a lot students will end up liking physics like you did.

Physics also relates with life kind of too

Hehehehe,,, I dread this subject so much that it amazes me when my two sisters would always brag about Physics. They can explain even in their dreams. I wouldn´t blame those with that mindset, including me, because we have never moved closer to understanding and taking our time to learn. If you are determined, you will realize that these subjects we presumed to be problematic aren´t hard.

Wow. Two of your sisters can brag about physics? That's really cool! They are bright kids. They are copying their own aunty Busayo...

The key is to have an open mind and stay determined. Eventually, it will all click.

Oh wow.
Fortunately I am not a science student and so I didn't have to battle with physics.
Though I couldn't escape mathematics.

You were no longer reading to pass, you were majorly reading to know. That's the most important thing. Now you know enough to teach others. Unlike some of us😂

I think that's the main difference. I was actually reading to know more for myself, rather than just pass.

I am sure you have strengths in other subjects. What was your favourite?

Geography. I could write it without reading. Although I'm no longer in pure or environmental science field

Well, I still prefer physics to chemistry because of all those chemical terms and so. And I also loved my physics teacher back then and this made physics easier for me. Good write up @olujay 👍

See you😄

Funny enough, I was also good at chemistry, but not as good with physics. But I can understand that you'd rather avoid calculations.

On the contrary, calculations are often straight forward and easy. People just don't give it a try.

Thank you for reading, Queen.

I so much love your determination to break out from your academic level initially to a better level..look at u now, so smart and brainy...Indeed, whatever one sets his mind to achieve is doable with determination.

I passed my physics oo but with so much effort and struggle
Not an easy going subject for me unlike biology, and others which I can read and understand better without struggles

U are an engineer so physics should be Ur surname 😂😂👍

That's the thing, really whatever we set our minds too is achievable, as long as we remain steadfast. I am glad I worked my way around physics, and I had the right company too.

Of course, I had to be good at physics. Who would have thought that I would need the knowledge so much in the university?

Wow, it felt like I was listening to a teacher, a guru and I loved it. While in secondary school I never hated an subject because I felt like the only reason why I would hate a subject is because I have limited knowledge of it. But that doesn't mean I'm good at most of them, to be sincere, I'm not good at any of them because I am a very poor reader when it comes to school books.

I love physics and I would be happy if I have a teacher like you to put me through.

0

For a fact that you didn't hate any subject shows that you did alright for yourself, and that's really cool. Most students have that one subject that they hate.

I was a guru then, I would admit. But now, what I know is way different; I did engineering, you know. But that didn't mean I can't brush up and do well as a teacher. Although teaching isn't my favourite thing to do, I still manage to do it well.

My fees don't come cheap, though. But I know the Hope Ahama is more than capable.

I think I should have a subject that I don't like but I'm not really sure if I don't like it. I'm really too poor when it comes to studying abeg.

The best thing that can happen to students is when they got a teacher that understands the subject and loves it and not one who doesn't. Seeing how you bring yourself to learn physics on your own by reading and asking questions from teachers shows how good you are in physics now and truth be told any student that have you as their physics teacher will really enjoy your teaching because you will know what you are doing and not just teaching for teaching sake.

Oh, yes. The easiest way to teach students is to first arouse their interest in that topic. That way, they can easily grasp whatever that they need to be taught.

I love physics, and so I'd find ways to allow them to see it all in a better light, rather than dreading it.

I had a very boring teacher teach us physics when I was in school, and his style did not even help at all. He didn't even have the enthusiasm.

If I were to be a teacher, I would choose physics because I know exactly what it's like to not seem to get it and just how to go about it.

I love physics and I also love the reason why you would choose to teach that subject.

I began to read more than most of my colleagues.

Yeah, this is key.

I had mastered physics to the point where it was second nature to me—at least at my level.

I want to be like you🤩🤩

Your explanations are simple and easy to understand. It's clear that physics is second to nature to you, and that's because of the level of studying and how you dedicated your time to really understand the subject, which is good.

Which your reason, I'm certain that students will be happy to learn physics from you.

Physics was also a subject that came naturally to me. I was great at it and always the top student in class in that subject.

Physics used to be one subject I enjoyed because it seemed straight to the point to me but I can't say the same for chemistry at the time.
One thing I got from your write up is that whatever you put your mind to is achievable once you are ready to put in the work. And it's no surprise you are a physics guru. ❤️

Physics was actually also challenging for me at some point.

During ss1 and 2 beginning. I loved physics, it was always nice. But towards the end of ss2 and ss3, I hated it. It became so hard. Although, they changed our teacher and that so affected. But actually, I don’t know if it was the teacher or it was just getting harder or it was just me not studying heheh.

I started to hate it and consider it hard. I usually get low in physics then. But when I wanted to write my Jamb, I had to put more effort into physics, because the rest was not an issue. Surprisingly, It was one my highest score. I got about 78 or 79 in jamb. If not the highest sef.

So yeah. My point is, nothing is actually that hard if you are willing to learn and you put your mind into it.

Physics can be fun too. I remembered when my teacher taught us about expansion and why the pans like the roofing makes noise. It was realistic and fun. That teacher made me love physics.

Oh my… I feel like I wrote a whole post. Hehe 😹

I don’t know if it was the teacher or it was just getting harder or it was just me not studying

I would say that it probably was all three. 😂 Physics does get tougher as you go higher.

Woah. You scored about 79? That's impressive. You see, all you had to do was set your mind to beating physics, and you did. I think I scored 73 in my JAMB examinations during my own time.

You see, physics can be fun. The noise with the roof pans was due to thermal expansion as the pan was subjected to a lot of heat from being under the sun.

I feel like I wrote a whole post

Nope. You made an amazing comment, and I love it. Thank you!
