Shopping Showdown: Online vs. In-Store - Weighing the Pros and Cons

(Edited)

Online shopping has grown in popularity in recent years, with an increasing number of people using their mobile devices to buy everything from clothing and electronics to groceries and household items. However, the advent of online shopping has sparked debate about the relative advantages of shopping online versus in person.

Surely, I have had experiences with shopping in person, as that was the everyday lifestyle before the rise of online shopping. And when online shopping became readily accessible in my country, I was often fascinated by the idea of not leaving my lazy couch and having my desired items come home to me instead—and I often did indulge myself in the experience.

However. my experience over the years has been sufficient to help me develop the proclivity to choose one over the other in certain circumstances. Because, as we all know, there are certain perks to choosing one over the other in specific situations—in my country, at least.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to picking one over the other. And to better explain myself, I will be segregating my opinions into a few categories:

  • Conveniences & Selection

When it comes to a matter of how accessible and easy it is to find whatever I may be looking for, online shopping may always beat physical shopping to the punch. Online shopping allows one to shop anytime, anywhere, while physical shopping is limited to store hours and location. An example is a time when I needed to get parts and materials to use for my final year project.

I am building a prototype of an automated car wash system for my final project in school, and it requires certain components that would require deep digging to find. They are specific products that are not interchangeable.

IMG_20230110_055030.jpgSome parts of my project

To get these components in person would require me to travel a journey of about 8 hours, if not way more, just to get there and begin looking for them. Kindly note "begin looking for it," as it means I would still need to go all about searching for these components. And count me lucky if I do find all of them on the same day.

Knowing all the hassle I could go through to begin gathering the components, I simply opted for online shopping, Aliexpress, and went on to search for them. And without much time and complications, I found all I needed and proceeded to purchase them.

In this case, online shopping proved to be more efficient.

  • Price

A very crucial concern for many individuals like myself when it comes to shopping is how little one can pay to get good value. Basically, most people would love to get more for their money and not pay more than they should.

This heavily influences my decision to do physical or online shopping. And the way online shopping works rarely allows for bargains, whereas physical shopping allows for price negotiations as if the transaction were done in person.

image.png Getting coffee for my upcoming exams

There are instances where one may find that goods on the e-market are actually cheaper than what they may find in the local markets. And this is good, but the problem lies in the fact that the goods are actually way more expensive than they are in the local shops. What do you do then? Argue with your screen? most emphatically not.

The aforementioned case applies directly to web-based e-markets. How about online vendors? How easy is it to persuade them over chat or a phone call? Is it as simple to strike a good deal for oneself virtually as it is to negotiate with the vendor in person? Nope, I presume.

In this case, I may want to go to the location of the product and its seller and try to get the "whatever" for $35 rather than $70. In a few minutes of negotiating, I either get a good deal or I walk out without the "whatever." In either case, I'd be better off knowing I tried to get a good deal rather than having some ridiculous price shoved down my throat.

  • Delivery & Experience

Online shopping provides the exquisite experience of not having to leave a spot and having your goods come right after you. Physical shopping, on the other hand, requires one to get up and go get what it is they want by themselves.

However, there are some limitations.Online shopping requires waiting for the product to be shipped, while physical shopping allows you to take the product home with you immediately.

Depending on the product and where it is coming from, one cannot rule out the fact that there's going to be a waiting time. In some cases, deliveries are very quick, while in others they can take years.

In the case where the delivery may take too long, I may prefer to walk into some local store to get what I need ASAP.

One disadvantage of online shopping is that what one orders may not be what one receives.

An example is when I ordered a $66 cake to be made, and when we went to get it, it was entirely different from what we ordered. I then had to spend $40 more to fix the cake because it was meant to be for my mother's golden jubilee celebration party. You can imagine the disappointment. If you'd like, you can read about it here if you'd like.

What I ordered VS what I got

image.png

In conclusion, my decision to shop online or in person depends on the circumstances and my preferences at that time.

While online shopping has its benefits, such as convenience, a wider selection of products, and the ability to shop anytime and anywhere, physical shopping allows for the opportunity to negotiate prices and offers a more tangible shopping experience. I'd say I prefer physical shopping.

What an analysis of the matter on ground! 😅 You sure do know how to convince people to use either of them.

Well, I agree with you on how convenient online shopping is... I have a good memory of that but a bad memory of what I ordered versus what I got lol.

Nicely written, thanks for sharing!

Well, what can I say? It actually has been a conversation that I have had with people regularly, and so to find the prompt was a "definitely" for me.

I believe it's the way people handle their businesses that cause these problems. It's not difficult, really. If you can't provide the service as you have advertised, then don't advertise in the first place. It's unfair to customers to not get what they had expected. This is why going to see the stuff with your koro koro eyes may be better in this situation.

There's for reading. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Haha I've had the conversations a lot too but I'm so sure you've had more than I do 😅 see as you table the matter for this post nau

Don't mind those set of sellers, making customers lose interest in what may actually be real because they've beeb duped too many times.

Koro Koro eye buying nau sure pass 😂

I table am?? 😁
Don't mind me.

It's sad how some people do not see past the monetary gain they'd make, even at the detriment of their reputation. Don't you think the reputation should come first?

It should, I'm always for that before the money... Even though I have started any business yet 🥲

For me I prefer online shopping not because of price but because of how convenient it is. Most of the things are buy will take about 12 hours or a day to get to me. Even though it will cost me less time to go to the market and get those things I still don’t feel the urge to leave home to go and get those stuff.

One of the exciting things about where I buy my things is that 90% of the time you get what you ordered for.

One of the things that make we think twice about shopping online is because of fraud. This days people are soo corny and if you don’t take time you will be duped easily.

Anyways I think location will be a big factor in considering what you will go for in the long run.

Sir Rubiloot himself

I hear you, and I surely would most likely pick online shopping over getting things in person if it were to be that we had it just as you do over there. Over here, it's not as good as it should be. And it's for this reason that many people shy away from online shopping.

There are still some good e-commerce services and reliable online vendors that would deliver well, but I'd try to be on the safe side and go shopping myself if it isn't going to be "not worth it."

It's good to see you around, man.

Detective 🕵️‍♀️

There are people who will always try to loot from the innocent. It’s good at other locations and bad at other places. When I went to Accra buying things online was pretty cool.

All you had to do was use an app; even for food and within an hour you would have it considering the traffic and all that

The way I see it, I think you guys have it much better than we do over here. It makes me want to move to your country and join in all the enjoyment.

But really, it's not that bad here, though. It's just that we have trust issues here.

Hmm this is nice, a detailed analysis of the subject matter.
Well I would say both is good but also has their disadvantages.
Because of what I ordered vs what I got, I prefer physical method of shopping, to avoid stories that touch just like that cake 😃😃

They both have their pros and cons, and situations that they are best employed. This is why I wouldn't outrightly debunk one for the other.

And I do think that the fear of receiving something less that what one may have expected is a big reason many people would rather walk into a store and get what they want by themselves.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's good to have you around, man.

That is the situation which a lot of people happen to fall into these days.

You should have seen how furious, and not just disappointed we were. Now, I have learned to never give any online vendor a job to make a cake for me. I'd rather walk into a cake store and get one that's befitting for the ocassion.

A very wise decision. Some of them don't deserve the patronage they get.

Gosh, such disappointment.. I am sorry about that.. and even when you try to complain.. yeah they come up with excuses.

Totally agree.. my way of shopping depends on the circumstances and what I want to buy.

And for your project.. they are some stuffs that hard to find physically but ordering them online could be easy.
Looks nice. Will you build a car for me ?🥺

Well, what do you expect from humans? They would always want to defend their actions. For some reason, criticism unsettles our sense of self-importance, pushing us to defend ourselves and, you know, come up with excuses.

I mean, why do people go on to do something different from what they said they'd do? Why can't they see past the monetary gain and seek a better reputation? "A good name is better than riches," right? Nonetheless, there are still reliable online services and vendors that one can count on; they are just not many.

In the case of my project, shopping online was the only viable option, so I went for it. It may have been unwise of me to knowingly embark on a journey that would eventually prove futile.

You want a car? Easy! Just mail me your specifications. I know you like them fancy, though.

I know josedicuss will have a lot to say about this topic but let me not disturb his peace today.

I don't think I have ordered something online before. Nope. Never. I have always waltz into the store and purchase them off the counter.

That works for me because every time i want to buy something it has to be important and urgent, so i wouldn't have to wait the delivery period out.

Oh, josediccus did say something about it. You should head over to his page and find it.

You really have never used some online service? Maybe some online vendor selling some undies or something? I am suprised. But then again, it's Iska.

I see you are using Veews. What's it really about? I have been seeing it around.

Hi Jay!
I love how you weighed both pros and cons before giving your preference. Both are good, it just depends on the circumstances like you said. For me, it's physical shopping all the way!

Oh I see you'd be as busy as a bee this period. Seeing as you've got coffees for your upcoming exams as well as building your project work. I wish you good luck and I hope to see the finished outcome of that prototype 😊.
Interesting read, thanks for sharing!

I do like online shopping very much. I just won't dispute the edge that shopping in person may have over it in most cases. Online shopping is good for conveniences, while physical shopping is much safer and less tactile.

I will be quite occupied with exam preparations as it will be my final one as an undergraduate. I wouldn't want to flunk it. Notwithstanding, I'll try to maintain a fair level of activity here, if I can though.

I'll surely share about my prototype on Hive when it's ready.
Thanks for coming around, Dimma. I trust you are well.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. And for us, each situation calls for its own solution. It all depends on what's on ground that will determine the kind of shopping you will take.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

I like physical shopping more because it's way easier to strike a good bargain. And one can even inspect the product before actually paying, unlike with online shopping.

Thank you for reading, man.

I’ll also choose online shopping over the physical, some may call it lazy but from how I see it, it is more convenient and easier to process. You don’t need to fight or argue with anyone over the prices of anything online, everything is there and you can choose from which is suitable for you. When we talk about online shopping, most people believe it is easier to get cheated, meanwhile you can easily be cheated physically if you find yourself at the wrong place.

Online shopping is really cool, actually. It's one of the most useful ideas we have in this century. I love to use it. And even more so for the reason that there's no necessity to communicate directly with the seller, which makes it convenient.

You are absolutely right about being cheated; it can happen in any form. At the end of the day, it's just best for one to weigh their options and pick whichever of the two would be most suitable for them.

Thanks for coming around, man.
