Something Light to Unwind With || Wingwomen Film Review

Captivated by the type of characters I got a glimpse of in a clip of Wingwomen, I couldn't help but indulge myself in what the directors of the film had in stock for me. With two hours gone by, I feel very content with what I have experienced, knowing that I trusted my gut.

The 2023 French film Wimgwomen tells the story of a team of two women who go on missions as ordered by their boss, Godmother. The need to live like normal people arose, and then they sought to retire. They were an invaluable asset, however, and so retiring was going to be a problem—not with one last mission. The last mission ties them up with some other recruit, and together they strive to fight for their very dear lives as the world seems to be against them.

I hoped that what I had seen in the short preview I had seen on Netflix wasn't the highlight of the film. The humour and feelings I got from that preview motivated me to watch the film, but I was looking for more than just that and to not find anything less. The first few seconds thickened my interest, as I found it entertaining. That made me feel like I was in for a real treat.

I couldn't exactly picture what I expected, but I was looking for thrills and action, as that was the vibe I was getting already. I got a little more than I bargained for instead.

Perhaps it was the characters in the film that made me enjoy the film even more, or it was the actors themselves that sold the film to me. I couldn't quite put a pin on it, but I do know that the camaraderie between the characters was something that gave life to the film. Maybe the film would have been a little flat without it.

One thing that I didn't quite realise until the very end of the film, when I thought back on everything that I had watched, was that there really weren't many characters. The plot was simple and straight-forward. Nothing complex, yet I didn't think that there was that much missing. I was engrossed like that.

The soundtrack of this film is something to commend. There was life to the film, mostly because of the soundtrack. There was a certain way that the songs, with their rhythms especially, synchronised with the film in many parts. It was all enjoyable.

Alongside the appealing soundtrack to appreciate is the fine effort put into making this film look good. I do not think that there were many visual effects implemented, as most of the visual elements were simple, but they weren't bad jobs at all.

Reverting, I do think that there is something special about the actresses in this film, the way they played their characters, and how they made the film interesting to me. I particularly loved the performance of Adèle Exarchopoulos, a French actress, and I could actually be interested in any film I find her in henceforth. There was this life to her character that made me enjoy the film as much as I did.

To expand on the storyline and its progression, I think it started alright with the right tempo, and then it did well to remain balanced by keeping me engaged with the entertaining humour in the dialogue between the main characters. The climax of the film could have been a little higher and more intense, as I didn't feel satisfied with the little intrigue I felt. But it was alright regardless. The ending, thankfully, was just fine and sublime.

My favourite scene was a few minutes of a motorcycle racing through a city at high speed. Personally, it was exhilarating to watch, as I am drawn to things of that sort. There wasn't much of that, even with cars, and that was a bummer, but it was okay. The entire film wasn't about it anyway.

For someone who's looking for something to unwind with within the space of two hours, I would recommend this film. It is a film that manages to deliver in many ways to leave one feeling entertained. It most certainly isn't the best you'd find on any streaming platform, but it's something worth watching.

I'll leave it with a rating of 6.5/10.

It feels good when we enjoy a good movie, I don't usually notice soundtracks, but I recognize when they come through, as you described, the music was important.

Music is very important, yes. We may not always be mindful of it, but some are with appreciating if they are exceptional.

I hadn't heard of this film and to be honest the plot doesn't interest me that much, but I love Adèle Exarchopoulos, she's so talented and I've enjoyed every single time I've seen hor on screen so I might give it a shot. Thanks for sharing

I totally understand that the plot isn't that intersting for most people. I only enjoyed it for way more than just that.

I found Adele to be funny and real, and that's most why I enjoyed her in the film. What other film have you seen her star in?

I saw her in La Vie d'Adèle, Zero Fucks Given and Les cinq diables and she nailed it every time.
