The Detective's in Town: Bringing The Wizard of Baker Street To Life

Being the kind of person that watches films a lot, there are a plethora of fictional characters that I have seen and come to love, in fact. Ranging from the kind you'd find in animation, the likes of Superman and X-men, to much more realistic ones like Baba Voss in the TV series See, there are definitely some I would pick to bring to life (reality), but we'll be talking about just one of them today.

Talking about films, there are not many genres that give me as much excitement as the mystery/crime type—the kind that requires deductive reasoning and that type of thing. The sleuth gets me pumped.

I think I began to understand how much I do enjoy this genre of films when I watched Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes. And even more so, knowing the character of Sherlock Holmes for the first time. I had only heard a few things about him—how excellent a detective he is—and didn't know any more until I binge-watched the series.

Who is this Sherlock Holmes I speak of?

Well, imagine a person who can tell you just what you ate this morning by the way you tie your tie; or where you have been in the last couple of hours by the color of the dirt under the sole of your shoes; or how many siblings you have just by the way you speak. "Impossible," you may think. Well, this type of person (or character), Sherlock Holmes, does the impossible—to an impeccable level of astonishment.

A few of the most peculiar personalities of Sherlock are that he is brilliant, observant, and logical. He has a genius-level intellect with an impeccable ability to solve complex problems, an exceptional ability to observe even the smallest details and make inferences from them, and is an extremely rational thinker — relying on deduction and reason to solve problems.

Fictional, yes, of course. But let's put aside this thought of this personality of a person being imaginary and take it that he, for some bizarre reason, exists: that somehow, we managed to bring him into existence. Just how would he coexist with us in this time we live in?

You see, but you do not observe

Having the greatest detective in our midst would not only mean that we have very exciting insights into certain concepts, but that we may very well then be able to get answers to problems (or situations) that are mind-boggling. For example, consider the recent presidential election in Nigeria.

Many of us have wondered, are wondering, and will continue to wonder just how an 80-year-old man known to be a mafia boss, known for his controversial meaningless statements and being physically unstable and unfit, managed to win an election that he clearly seemed to not be winning. Something is definitely sus somewhere. In a matter of time, an applaudable explanation and reveal may very well be presented by Sherlock. But I digress...

Personally, I like to think that having Sherlock around would be a great opportunity to learn from him. It would be fascinating to see just how Mr. Holmes approaches everyday situations with his ability to observe the smallest details and make inferences from them.

You see, but you do not observe...

...is probably one of my favorite quotes by Sherlock.

It basically means that we people have the ability to physically see the things around us, but we do not truly pay attention to them. We do not take the time to observe the details, patterns, and connections tied to what we see.

Mr. Holmes vs. social media

The story of Sherlock Holmes sort of dates back a little— to a time when social media wasn't much of a big deal. That is, his interactions with social media and the people that are engulfed in them will be fascinating.

His views, takes, and opinions about how the world has turned out would be really interesting to learn, and very well comedic too, given the kind of person that he is: he would probably savage the way we behave in this conundrum called social media.

He probably would say something like, "How fascinating is it to find that one of this generation's biggest concerns is how many people are following them?"

His perspective on the way many of us see things now and also on how we have turned this world into an oddly strange place would be immensely insightful, as he is indeed a rational thinker.

If Sherlock Holmes were indeed real, he sure would stir quite the controversy, innit? What do you think about Sherlock Homles? If you do find a man like him, what would you do?

Sherlock Holmes a character that is always referenced from movies that deal with crimes. I’ve always been interested in watching it for some reason I haven’t watched.

Maybe this is the push I needed cos you’ve most definitely got me hyped for the movie.

Sherlock is quite the interesting character, really. You'll grow fond of him quickly when you do watch the series.

I'll advise to watch Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks for reading, man.
