When we fall asleep, where do we go?

I wonder if I used to have a much sharper brain as a kid, or if I just grew older and now have a lot of weight on my brain. People never assumed that I was forgetful back then because I used to remember pretty much everything, from birthdays to cartoon shows I loved to the dreams (and nightmares) I had then. Now my mind's often running many programmes concurrently, and you know the rest...

You know, speaking of dreams, I remember that I didn't quite understand the concept of rest as a kid back then. It didn't add up in my small brain. How can there be so much to achieve in a day and we would take out about eight hours to do, uh, absolutely nothing? Pffft...I had a ton of cartoon shows to catch up on, video game levels to complete, and the internet to explore.

I spent most of my time doing what I really wanted to do and never really sleeping adequately, as well as getting grounded from the TV and my game console. Heh. Soon enough, everyone started noticing that I wasn't sleeping well because, of course, I started looking pale and became less and less active. There sure is no cheating nature, especially when you only sleep under an hour a day too often.

Anyway, I know better now. I learned over time that without adequate sleep, you would never be as optimal as you can be with good rest. Still, I spend a lot of time "doing" and never really resting, so much so that falling asleep and staying that way for as long as necessary's a bit of a difficulty sometimes.

But...When we fall asleep, where do we go? Well, that's the title of the album by Billie Eilish I am listening to while I write this. I heard Bad Guy, one of its songs, in a film today and remembered it. So... Really, though? Where do we go when we are asleep? And am I the only one who doesn't remember their dreams sometimes, and that it's more like I blink and a couple of hours pass by?

I learned something new about myself some years ago. If I don't feel fatigued enough, I will be up earlier than I should for good rest. And, usually, external things could wake me up easily, such as the notifications on my phone. So I figured that exercising helped me rest more and longer when I tried out the gym.

Weeks ago, I started to make certain shifts in my lifestyle, and it has involved working out a lot more and eating a thief. Lifting weights is what I am doing more of now than callisthenics, simply because I think it's easier. Heh. What happens then is that, you know, I feel exhausted enough and then sleep a lot more.

I can make these changes easily now because I am not working as much as before when the school is in session and when I have community service. I'd have that locked in before all that resumes, and I'll find a balance between them.

Back to dreams, again. When I remember them, they're usually influenced by my most recent experiences or some really weird sedatives. And for a guy who watches movies often, you can imagine what goes on in my head when I'm asleep. Some of them are hilarious!

How do you like your sleep? Most people are never comfortable in hot environments. Some don't enjoy cool environments either. If I had my way every time, I would keep my space cooler than room temperature. That's how you could find me smiling in my sleep.

Listening to music. Yes. Listening to music before bed is something I often find myself doing every night. I have certain playlists I made myself or the ones Spotify makes for me that I play until I'm off to La La Land. On most days, it helps me sleep better.

I could do better with my sleep routine, in essence. For now, this is how it is for me.

I like the cool environment, lower than outside temperature with a perfect excuse for a blanket, I really don't have dreams while sleeping and don't feel I'm going anywhere but it always amazes me how ready and with energy I wake up after a hard day of work, I usually take a 2 Hrs nap after work to regenerate, glad exercise working for you I need to do some more too ✌️💪

If you really feel "ready and with energy" when you wake up after a hard day of or work, then you often rest well. That's really good, man. Where are you from, by the way?

As for my exercises, I was derailed a lot in the last few days. I am back to it now. Such is life, you know.

You are are now aware of your body's routine and need for sleep.. that's great.

We do not go anywhere when we sleep but our subconscious does and I heard that it goes about trying to replay the days event and show us something we forgot about or it helps finish what was unfinished in real time.

Let me illustrate..

One time in secondary school, I and a classmate had a quarrelling because I found out that she gossiped me with some other class mates of mine. I was mad at her but I could not do anything to her as whenever I am angry I begin to stutter and shed tears. When I got home, my mind was still pondering on the injustice that I faced in school and when I slept, you better believe that I dreamt of the quarrel not only that, I gave her some serious beatings and poundings in the dream😂😂. I woke feeling better at the final results of he dream. I was less concerned if she actually felt the beatings..you know spiritually or not but I was glad like I just finished mission impossible 😂😂.

So that's how dreams work sometime. Have a great week Jay

😅🤣 What is this, Becky? You took your friend to your dream for a smackdown? And you didn't even send if she was affected at all. You sha felt better. I don dey fear you o

I agree, though. Dreams are often reflections of reality in our minds when we sleep.

This article really speaks to me.

At the moment, I have a lot of professional work to do trying to develop my business and generate a bit more income. I'm well below the poverty line in my country, and it's hard on my morale.

I don't know if you've had time to read some of my posts. Maybe you're not interested, but that's not what's important, I'm not here to advertise myself. What I'm getting at is that my girlfriend and I bought a plot of land for a small amount of money, on which there's a fishing hut. We call it our little green house.

For the past 3 months, we've been renovating it, going at our own pace and continuing to work on developing our businesses. When we're out in the field, it's hard for us to work on our computers, because we prefer to work on our little green house. But at night we sleep really well.

On the other hand, last week we spent 7 days at our parents' to take a break from landscaping and have more time for our business projects. Well, we've had a very unhealthy lifestyle:

  • very little walking
  • Lots of sitting and working

As a result, we had very bad nights.

So it's a good thing that your routine includes sport! It's good for your health, bravo for that:

Hey, man. I think I understand how it may be for you. it is similar to situation at this point in my life.

What about your RV? I remember you were renovating that some months ago.

Truth is, my lifestyle is mosty very little walking and lots of sittle and working looking at screens. I needed to change that, and so I am taking exercises and being more concious about my sleep routine. It's not be going as planned in the past week, but such is life as things happen, you know.I am restabilizing now anyway.

In fact, I bought my converted van about 3 years ago. When I bought it, it was already fitted out and allowed me to make a few nice trips. I modified a few areas of my layout to improve functionality.

A few months ago, I had to dismantle it completely to take it to the garage for a check-up. So what you saw a few months ago was disassembly + reassembly. Since then, it's been going pretty well, even though I broke down 2 months ago. The repairs weren't very expensive.

Right now, I'm working on another project: fitting out a tiny house. That's what keeps me moving a bit in my days. It's the same as going to the gym, because I'm lifting weights, walking, bending down, getting into positions that make me work on my flexibility and so on. So it's a good thing.

But like you, my work consists mainly of being behind a screen. Setting up my tiny house takes up about 2 hours of my day. Which isn't much. But I think it's pretty good.

It's not be going as planned in the past week, but such is life as things happen, you know

Haha yes, I know what you mean. And that's ok, we also need to let life do its thing and add a little flexibility to our routines.

Better sleep is good for the health. Sometimes weird dreams are as a result of over stressing oneself. You becone too worried until it takes you even in your dreams. Thanks for a well shared story, really enjoyed it. Enjoy your week

You got that right, man. Can't underrate the power of good rest.

I hope you're having a good week.
