In an official announcement today, the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, declared Friday, December 1, 2023, as a public holiday in Nigeria. This holiday is dedicated to honoring the crucial contributions of farmers and fishermen and is referred to as Farmers’ Day.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 1st December, 2023, which marks Farmers’ Day, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” stated the Minister in a formal release.

The National Farmers’ Day, an annual celebration, is traditionally observed on the first Friday of December. It serves as a tribute to the relentless efforts and significant role played by farmers and fishermen in sustaining the nation’s food production.

During this commemoration, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture takes the opportunity to recognize and honor exceptional farmers and fishermen. Special awards are presented to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding practices and remarkable output in their respective fields.

This initiative aims not only to celebrate their hard work but also to encourage and inspire others to contribute to the agricultural sector, thereby enhancing the country’s food security and sustainability.

As Nigeria prepares to mark Farmers’ Day on December 1, let us all take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the dedication and resilience of our farmers and fishermen who play a pivotal role in feeding our nation.
