Coprophagia in Humans and Animals (Consumption of Feces).

Certain things are not only distressing or disturbing to the ears, but imagining the fact that, some humans go through that, that even makes it more scary. Coprophagia is a serious but rare disorder characterized by the symptoms of compulsive feces consumption. It is usually linked with depression, alcoholism, tumors, delirium, fetishes, dementia, and mental retardation. The etymology was coined from the Greek origin, "copros" which means feces, and phagein, translated to also mean to eat. Some of the medical issues that Coprophagia is linked with do not have the same pathophysiology, the question now is whether they share common features that would introduce an idea on the emergence of coprophagia in affected patients. A patient rushed into a hospital with such a disorder with the claim that he is not an ordinary human, he is a special specie, and his choice of consumption of feces would not affect his health. This patient would normally not fulfill his daily activities like bathing, using the toilet, and even taking time to put on cloth, during the process of assessment, the patient was smiling and muttering to himself, there was no other prior medical history presented, no evidence of mental issues at birth, and no family history of neuropsychiatric illness.

Coprophagia can have attached serious complications and pharmacological classes of medications available are limited to just a few second-generation antipsychotic agents as well as mood stabilizers. Nonpharmacological medication classes have been limited to behavioral theories. The minimum time for a reported case of coprophagia would last for six weeks and up to 24 weeks.

There was another case of a 59-year-old man who had a past medical history of the disorder and multiple inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations for manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder, according to the story, he was admitted to the hospital based on an acute episode of psychotic depression with complains about a depressed mood, the patient also experienced psychomotor retardiation, impoverished through content, anhedonia and a disheveled malodorous appearance, which was oriented from a person to another person, and place and time.

It was on the first day of hospitalization, coprophagia was observed during the first day of admission, when staff observed him defecating and consuming his how own feces multiple times in one day although, he was placed on consistent observation. He believed that his act of consuming feces was a very necessary retribution for his behavior, his act was supposed to prevent "god and society from imposing worse punishments”. These days, coprophagia is considered an unusual variant of pica, and there is no beneficial evidence that consuming feces does to any human, it can result in poor oral hygiene, chronic gingival infection, and chronic lesions on the mucosa and sialadenitis.

In some cases, there will be no evidence of mental subnormality, as well as comorbid, and other medical illnesses, without these conditions in place, there will be no other serious illness that could be used to explain these strange eating behavior.

Coprophagy, however, affects a wide range of vertebrates also, typically they feed either on their faces or on the faces of others. Not all individuals from a particular specie would demonstrate Coprophagy traits, chickens, for instance, are not attracted to feces, but they are to maggots which can develop in feces and they will be able to ingest large quantities of fecal matter in the process. Pigs, on the other hand, will consume human feces whenever they are allowed to roam freely.

It may be difficult to separate these traits in some animals, as some may be more complicated than others. Sometimes, the trait in an animal could be either medical or behavioral. Behavioral problems are often associated with triggers or events that suggest the responses of environmental rather than physiological. Some other preexisting medical conditions could also be a new problem or a list to be added to the problem of the animal.

For humans who consume feces, with schizophrenia condition, medical treatment for the underlying medical condition is considered by experts. There was a case of a little girl who was around 6 years old, she had the same condition and was also diagnosed with autism, the medical experts in charge of her case then decided to create a form of artificial feces made with a mixture of flour, water, and food coloring to have an actual form of feces. This is just an example of several other treatment options that have been used, there are medical and psychological treatments used to help those with this condition.
