Normally, the fungus is present in the human body, but when there is a case of overgrowth, then that is when we have a fungal infection. Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the nails and could also affect adjacent skin. It occurs in the form of nail discoloration, onycholysis, and thickening of the nail plate. It is so common that it accounts for about 90% of existing toenail infections that we have worldwide.

An infected nail creates pain and reduced life quality for those affected, and most onychomycoses are caused by Dermatophytes Trichophyton, Trichophyton rubum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton. The infection usually begins from tinea pedis, a fungal infection that surrounds the skin of the feet, then it is triggered by contributing factors like; occlusive footwear, humidity, nail trauma, and even genetic factors. Affected patients who already have a standing case of HIV, poor peripheral circulation, diabetes, and immunosuppression are more susceptible just like aged people are too.

Anyone can get a nail infection, some people more likely than others, like the conditions listed above, and in addition we also have some of these cases; people with fungal skin infections in other body parts, traumatic patients, a weak immune system, and venous insufficiency.

Due to the chemical composition of the nail, the nail is a formidable barrier to drug permeation, and diffusion into the nail is poor when compared to the skin. Both toenails and fingernails are susceptible to infection, which usually appears in the form of thickening, crumbling edges, and discoloration, but the condition is much more common with toenails.

It isn't a day job at all to treat nail fungus infection, it could take a long and expensive route, there are available topical ointments, oral anti-fungus medications, and several other alternative therapies. There are over-the-counter creams and ointments, but they have not proven to be highly effective. It usually would take up to 4 months before the infected nail is replaced with a fresh uninfected one. To completely get rid of the infected nail one or more of these available treatment options needs to be applied.

Applied Medications: Most times in the case of a mild infection, applied nail medicine would help to get rid of the infection. This treatment option would help to keep out new fungus, while nails grow. One of the most difficult parts of this treatment option is being able to remember to use it on time based on the prescription.

The patient may be asked to apply treatment daily, or once a week, it is a smart move to apply as prescribed. The side effects are; Ingrown toenails, swelling, redness, burning, or stinging while applying the medicine.

Oral Medications: This is a more aggressive treatment format than the previous one, the prescription of antifungal pills provides a higher cure rate than applied medications. It also works faster, with anti-fungal pills, a fingernail infection could b cured within two months, but it comes with possible side effects that would require that your dermatologist pays close attention to watch over you.

There are similar conditions that have the appearance of a fungal nail infection, so do not just conclude for yourself. Report to your health care provider, and through diagnosis and laboratory testing, there would be a confirmation of the presence of nail fungi infection or there is a need to look out for its look-alike.

Delay in treating a fungal nail infection is very risky as it has a close association with fungal skin infection, if the nail infection is not treated on time, it could spread to other parts and create more issues around there too.

Prevention to avoid getting a nail fungi infection is through the practice of certain safety tips like;

  • Ensuring that your hands and your feet are kept clean and dry.
  • Put on rubber gloves to avoid water exposure.
  • Make sure that fingernails are kept clean and short.
  • Ensure not to share nail trimmers with others.
  • Whenever you want to visit a nail salon to get beautification, make sure it is a clean one that has its instrument appropriately sterilized.
  • Limit the constant use of nail polish and artificial nails.
  • Stop sharing socks and shoes, especially with a suspected nail-infected person.
  • Put on socks that would allow your feet to breathe, usually synthetic ones.
  • Always put on sandals and shoes in public places.

After a successful nail infection case, some fungal nail infections may come back, particularly with existing conditions like diabetes, if you have a returning nail infection case, kindly seek professional help again.
