Hello friends, I hope you are doing well, thank you so much for visiting my blog, I remain grateful to have you as friends and I am also grateful for the support received through upvotes, comments, and resteems. Today, I will be talking about a very important and sensitive topic, I believe we should all be aware of, regardless of our gender and age. I will be speaking about, Obesity today, I hope that you enjoy reading and most importantly, gain knowledge in the process.

Obesity is the accumulation of lots of extra body fat, this body fat goes beyond normal as it begins to affect one's health and body function. The conclusion of being an obese person can only be made by a medical expert, after being observed to have a high body mass index (BMI). Yeah, BMI is used by doctors to help assess the appropriate weight for a certain age, sex, and height type. This test is done by combining a person's weight in kilograms and dividing it by the square of the person's height in meters. After the BMI test has been conducted, the appropriate way and the test result indicates 25-29.9, which shows the presence of excessive weight, when BMI is 30 or over 30, it signifies the presence of obesity.

Other associated factors will help in the determination of the presence of obesity, like the measurement of waist-hip ratio, weight to height as well as the distribution of fat, all playing a significant role in identifying how healthy the weight is. Obesity is not healthy at all as it can increase the possibility of developing quite a number of other health conditions such as; metabolic syndrome arthritis and some types of cancer. 1

Metabolic Syndrome Arthritis: Refers to a set of disease risk factors, with the ability to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, it is also known as insulin resistance syndrome. A medical expert will often consider the possibility of metabolic syndrome arthritis, according to medicalnewstoday. com when there is a showcase of one or more of these symptoms;

  • When the fasting blood sugar glucose level is 100 mg/dL or above.

  • With a blood pressure of 130/85 mm/Hg or above.

  • When the blood triglyceride is at 150 mg/dl or higher.

  • When there is a waist size of over 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women.

  • When there is high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol of 40 mg/dL or lower in men and 50 mg/dL lower in women.

The presence of three or more of the factors stated above signifies the presence of cardiovascular diseases such as; stroke, heart attack, and type 2 diabetes. The level of obesity and overweight grows on a continuous level in children as well as adults. It is one of the sides to the double burden of malnutrition, we even have a higher case of obese people despite the strong awareness of the condition, the larger groups of persons with obese children are children living in developing countries with an increased rate of 30% more than developed countries.

Possible causes of Obesity.

With the consumption of more calories than needed for energy, the body stores more calories as fat leading to obesity. Excessive weight gain is most of the time a genetic trait more than other traits, but there are other things that can trigger obesity with lifestyle habits and chances.

The intake of excessive calories: Certain food items can increase the chances of becoming obese, one of those food items are;

  • Fried foods.
  • Fast foods.
  • Diary products.
  • Food that contains excessive sugar.
  • Alchohol.
  • High-level carbohydrates.

Endocrine distributors: Liquid fructose which is a sugar type in beverages may possibly distort lipid and glucose metabolism resulting in metabolic syndrome and fatty liver. According to the research done by. Fructose corn may be found in some of these items;

  • Coffee creamer.
  • Sweetened products like juices, yogurt, and canned foods.
  • Bread and other baked items.
  • Cereal, cereal bars, or even nutrition bars.

Absence of sufficient sleep: The lack of sleep may result in hormonal changes, increasing appetite, and certainly leading to obesity. The absence of sleep produces ghrelin-ghrelin a hormone that stimulates appetite, lack of sleep also leads to leptin, which is an appetite-suppressing hormone.

Medications: Consistent intake of certain medications can lead to weight gain. Examples of such medications are; anticonvulsants and mood stabilizers, glucocorticoids, atypical antipsychotics, and certain antidepressants. 2

Obesity is highly dangerous to health, it is more than appearance, it is more about how it medically affects the body. Obese people have a short life expectancy, more often resulting from complications linked with several diseases. Those who have long-term obesity often have an associated link with atrophy of brain tissue, especially in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Women and men who are obese are also affected by infertility, it actually takes longer for an obese woman to get pregnant than a woman who isn't obese. 3

Obesity also leads to increased high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol, those with high blood pressure, have a high risk of stroke and heart disease.

Obesity as well increases the chances of uterus cancer, there is also a high chance of heartburn development, liver problems, and gallbladder diseases.

Sleep apnea is another danger linked with obesity, in this case, breathing reportedly stops and starts again during sleep.

Obesity can actually reduce life quality, altering the ability to engage in any form of previously enjoyed physical activities, public places may have to be avoided as well, it also comes with low self-esteem, disability, social isolation, and even lower work achievement. 4

How do we treat obesity.

Treating obesity comes in two major forms, the first thing is to focus on the factor causing obesity, which may not be as easy as it seems especially when it is connected with a psychological or emotional origin, secondly, the removal of surplus fat by reducing food intake is also really necessary. 5 The medical team can educate you properly on the choice of food that will help you get an appropriate and healthy food plan that will help you control obesity, joining support groups will help you know how to appropriately handle emotional stress and intimidation.

Conclusion.

Obesity is a serious case that has to be handled seriously, I really feel that when we are adding weight, we need to watch it before it even leads to obesity. Even if there is a case of obesity, it can still be handled appropriately without any feeling of depression, it may take time but eventually, you will be proud that you took the steps you took.
