ENG/ESP: Six Months Since Quitting My Job: What Has Changed?

There’s something about being home on a Monday that doesn’t sit quite well with me. Somehow, Mondays have become the day when we all put on this serious face; dressing, demeanour, and all. A day when we get dressed up and pretend to know exactly what we’re doing when we’re really just trying to survive.

In the corporate world, it’s the day when everyone dresses corporate to the teeth, with some men nearly choking beneath their tightly knotted ties and ladies donning their best professional dresses, and sometimes even heels that make them highly uncomfortable. Too uncomfortable.

Yesterday being Sunday night, as I slept in my bed, I realized that I missed the craze. I miss it too much not to write about it. I miss pressing half of the clothes in my wardrobe over the weekend. I miss cleaning my shoes till they sparkle every night. I miss the uncomfortable shoes. I miss the short corporate gowns, my crazy colleagues, and just leaving my house every day. It’s weird but I even miss Chef Ben’s food. I miss it all.

People say they hate routine, that is, having to do the exact same thing every freaking day. They say it gets awfully boring. But, what if we started to look at things differently as I do now. What if a routine is the only way some of us get to keep our minds off the things that bother us?

What if it’s the only way to temporarily forget all of the family problems one is constantly dealing with? What if it’s the only way to forget all our past mistakes and the number of times we had our hearts broken, even if it's only temporary.

There’s so much running through my mind right now, and I tell you this for free 90% of them are confusing and nearly depressing.

I think that what I miss the most…no, scrap that, I KNOW that what I miss the most about my physical job was leaving home early and retiring to bed late, too tired or too busy to think about anything else but work. Nothing else mattered. Now, there's so much time to think about what my next line of action should or shouldn't be.

I'm here wondering if the last two months I spent on a course is well worth it, time, money, and energy inclusive. I mean, this is Nigeria after all. And here, it is not necessarily about what you know or how many certificates you have to show for it, but it’s more about the people you know.

Is it weird that I now miss when I barely had the time to think of anything else? Heck, I was single for so long and I barely had the time to think of the “other gender”, much less honor a date. Now, the story is different. I find myself thinking too often of the ‘other gender’ and what a relationship should be like for me.

There's also the fact that I am starting to gain weight. Just why?! I honestly didn’t think it was too much of a bother until everyone started to point it out. I have moved from the fifty-something kg range to the early sixties, and I do not find it funny.

I thought working remotely would give me all of the satisfaction I desired, but six months later, the desire to go back to the physical workspace is so overwhelming.

You’re probably thinking to yourself,

“Omosefe, six months into a physical workspace, you’ll be back writing about how you miss working remotely”.

Truth is, even I do not know what it'll be like if I return. However, what I do know is that I have tasted both worlds, and I’d rather go for that which makes me think less of the things I struggle with. Most importantly, i’d rather settle for the one where I lose weight and not add up.

**In conclusion, the saying about humans being insatiable is no doubt the truth, because here I am thinking about a million reasons why I miss working full time and not remotely, when I was in fact the one who opted to resign to find a remote job or to focus fully on my online businesses. **

Thank you for reading!

Means you prefer the everyday work routine... For me, I prefer working from the comfort of my home and not have to show in office everyday. A kind of work where I would have time for my family and do other things, or even have the time to work for more than one companies at the same time since it is a remote job.

Well,I completely understand you. Honestly, my mind is just everywhere right now, maybe this article is how I feel today. I guess we'll find out.

Meanwhile, I do hope you understand that some remote jobs do not exactly give you the free time you think you'd get. The downside for some remote jobs is not having a definite closing time. Still, I understand your point.

smiles.. yeah, I get you don't have a closing time, you work at home so everyday is your working hour. and you would be needed to attend virtual meetings most often. I understand most of it.

The human mind is a maze. Today, we'd want to follow a direction, then on other days, we'd want something else.

And it's not a had thing, actually. It is as a result of so many factors such as emotions, pressure, circumstances, time and space all coming together with an effect on the mind.

You had your reasons for quitting and settling for remote work. Now, you're there but you miss the old times. It's quite normal.

It is mostly be because you miss the social interaction and the routine.

I think you could find your way around this by creating something fresh for yourself to try out.

As deterministic as routines maybe, they could as well be boring and become stale, sort of.

I wish you all the very best in trying to stay afloat the whole drama of life.

@olujay You really do get me. I just kept nodding after every line especially the social interaction bit. Thank you for your comment.
