Part 2 Eyüp Sultan Diaries: A Day Filled with Peace, Prayer, Friendship, and Beautiful Memories (eng-tr)
When I finally arrived at the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, my friend had not arrived yet. I actually planned it that way because I wanted to spend some quiet time there before we met. It was almost ten o’clock in the morning, but the weather was still cool. The sunlight was soft, there was a gentle breeze, and people were walking around without any rush. The whole square felt peaceful. After spending almost the entire day there, I realized that these early morning hours are probably the best time to visit Eyüp Sultan. As the day went on, especially because it was Friday, everything became much more crowded. Next time, I think I will leave home even earlier. There is something special about walking through these historic streets while Istanbul is just waking up. The city feels slower, the air is fresher, and you can truly enjoy every detail around you.

Eyüp Sultan is one of the most meaningful places in Istanbul for Muslims. The mosque stands next to the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, one of the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He hosted the Prophet in Medina after the Hijrah and later joined the first Muslim expedition to Constantinople, where he passed away. His burial place remained unknown for centuries until Akşemseddin, the spiritual guide of Sultan Mehmed II, discovered it before the conquest of Istanbul. After the conquest, a mosque and a tomb were built around this sacred place. Every time I visit Eyüp Sultan, I remember this history. It makes the visit much more meaningful because you are not only visiting a beautiful mosque, but also standing near someone who dedicated his life to Islam and to the Prophet.

Before entering the mosque, I had already made ablution at a small neighborhood mosque that I found on my way. Because of that, I walked directly into the women’s prayer area. I prayed two rakats, made my duas, and then decided to stay there for a while. I love sitting quietly inside mosques without doing anything. Watching people pray, listening to the silence, and simply slowing down always makes me feel peaceful. I opened the Quran and read Surah Yasin, one of my favorite chapters. Every time I read it, I feel calmer. I stayed there for a while after finishing it, just observing the beautiful atmosphere around me. Sometimes silence speaks louder than words, and I think moments like these are very valuable in our busy lives.

Just as I finished reading, my friend called me to say that she had arrived with her daughter. We had not seen each other for a very long time, so I was really happy to see her again. It is always interesting how years can pass so quickly, but once you meet an old friend, it feels like no time has passed at all. We hugged each other and immediately started talking. We had so many things to share. Since the weather was getting warmer, we decided to find a nice place to sit. We chose Mihmandar Cafe, which is right next to the square. I actually knew this place from Eskişehir because I had visited one of their branches before. This time we were not planning to eat. We simply wanted to enjoy our conversation in a comfortable place.

At the cafe, I ordered a glass of ice-cold blackberry juice. It was exactly what I needed after walking around the square. It tasted sweeter than I expected, but it was still delicious. My friend even added a little water to her drink because she thought it was too sweet. We laughed about it and continued talking for almost two hours. We talked about our lives, our families, work, old school memories, and everything that had happened since we last met. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you miss someone until you finally sit down together again. Those two hours passed incredibly fast, and I enjoyed every minute of them.
Sohbetin her dakikasından ayrı keyif aldım.

While we were sitting at the cafe, the atmosphere around us slowly started to change. More and more people were arriving for the Friday prayer. Every street leading to the mosque became busier. The courtyard slowly filled with people, and even the women’s prayer area became crowded. It reminded me of the beautiful atmosphere in Makkah and Madinah. Of course, they are completely different places, but seeing thousands of people gathering together only for worship gave me the same peaceful feeling. We decided not to rush. Instead, we stayed at the cafe, enjoyed our conversation a little longer, and waited for the prayer to finish before returning to the mosque.
Biz kafede otururken meydandaki atmosfer yavaş yavaş değişmeye başladı. Cuma namazı için insanlar akın akın geliyordu. Camiye çıkan bütün sokaklar kalabalıklaşmaya başladı. Avlu kısa sürede doldu. Kadınlar bölümü bile tamamen kalabalık olmuştu. O an bana Mekke ve Medine’deki o güzel atmosferi hatırlattı.

Before the prayer started, we walked through the small shopping streets around the mosque. To be honest, we also wanted to cool down because the sun was becoming stronger every minute. These little streets are one of my favorite parts of Eyüp Sultan. There were shops selling prayer rugs, Qurans, prayer beads, perfumes, Islamic books, traditional clothes, and many beautiful gifts. Even if I do not buy anything, I always enjoy walking around and looking at everything. Every shop has its own unique atmosphere. I also took many photos because I wanted to show these beautiful places to all of you. I hope these photos can give you a small feeling of what it is like to walk through these historic streets.

After the crowds became smaller, we returned to the mosque area once again. Standing there under the bright summer sun while people were praying reminded me so much of my time in Makkah and Madinah. For a few moments, I completely forgot where I was. I suddenly realized how much I miss those holy cities. I truly hope that one day Allah will allow me to visit them again. There is a different kind of peace that you can only feel in places where millions of people come together with sincere hearts to worship. That feeling stayed with me for the rest of the day.

While walking around the mosque, I stopped in front of the information board about Akşemseddin. Reading it once again reminded me of the incredible story of how he discovered the burial place of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari centuries after his passing. I quietly recited Al-Fatiha for Eyüp Sultan and then another one for Akşemseddin. Moments like these always make me think about the people who dedicated their lives to Islam, knowledge, and serving others. Visiting places connected to such remarkable people fills my heart with gratitude. It is difficult to explain, but these visits always leave me feeling lighter and more peaceful.
Caminin çevresinde dolaşırken Akşemseddin’i anlatan bilgilendirme tabelesinin önünde durdum. Böyle anlar bana her zaman ömrünü İslam’a, ilme ve insanlığa adamış güzel insanları hatırlatıyor.

After spending hours in the summer heat, there was only one thing we really wanted—ice cream. So we walked to Kahve Dünyası. I honestly did not expect the ice cream to be that good, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious and exactly what we needed after such a warm day. We stayed there for another half hour, talking and relaxing. Soon my friend had to leave because she had promised to meet other friends before returning home. Since she only had a few days left in Istanbul, she wanted to spend time with everyone. We hugged each other, said goodbye, and promised that we would not wait so many years before meeting again.

After saying goodbye, I started walking back alone. The same streets that had felt cool and peaceful in the morning were now very hot. At that moment, I really wished I had brought a hat with me. I rarely wear sunglasses, so I did not miss them, but a hat would have made a big difference. The road to the metrobus station is slightly uphill, and under the afternoon sun it felt much longer than it actually was. Luckily, I saw a young boy selling cold bottles of water. I immediately bought one, and it tasted like the best water in the world. Sometimes the smallest things become the most memorable parts of a day.
O an yanıma şapka almadığıma gerçekten pişman oldum.

When I finally arrived home, I was physically tired but emotionally refreshed. The heat had exhausted me, yet my heart felt peaceful. My previous visit to Eyüp Sultan had been almost seven months earlier. This time, I promised myself that I would not wait that long again. Some places have a special effect on your soul, and Eyüp Sultan is definitely one of those places for me. Spending a day there with an old friend, praying, walking through the historic streets, taking photos, and simply slowing down reminded me once again why I love Istanbul despite all its crowds, traffic, and busy life. Every visit leaves me with beautiful memories, and I already know that I will be back again very soon.
