Three Days in Büyükada Part 3: Waking Up by the Sea (eng-tr)

This is the last part of my Büyükada series, and I think it is also my favorite part. In the first post, I shared our ferry trip from Istanbul to Büyükada. In the second part, I showed you the center of the island, the little streets, our tea break and our first hours there. Now I want to show you the place where we stayed. For me, this was the most beautiful part of the whole trip.

When we first entered the house and saw the view, we were very happy. The sea was right in front of us. There were small boats on the water, green trees around the house and a small terrace where we could sit for hours. Even now, almost two weeks later, I still look at these photos. Sometimes I cannot believe how peaceful those moments were.

The best thing about staying in a house instead of a hotel was having our own little routine. We did not need to wake up early. We did not have breakfast hours. We could sleep as long as we wanted, wake up slowly and prepare our food when we were ready. This simple freedom made the trip much more relaxing.

We brought many of our breakfast ingredients with us. In the morning, we prepared eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, cheese and bread. Of course, there was also tea. A Turkish breakfast without tea feels incomplete to me. We usually had a late breakfast around noon, so it was almost like brunch. We tried to eat only two main meals during the day.

Preparing breakfast was also part of the fun. Normally cooking can sometimes feel like work, but there it felt different. We had time. Nobody was rushing. We talked while preparing the table, made tea and then sat in front of that beautiful sea view. Sometimes breakfast preparation took almost an hour, but we did not care at all.

And then we stayed at that table for a long time. We ate slowly, drank tea and talked about many things. Sometimes we were quiet and just watched the sea. Small boats were moving, birds were flying and the sound of the water was always there. It was one of those moments when you do not really need anything else.

Sonra o masada uzun süre oturuyorduk. Yavaş yavaş yemek yiyor, çay içiyor ve birçok şey konuşuyorduk. Bazen de sessizce oturup sadece denizi izliyorduk. Küçük tekneler geçiyor, kuşlar uçuyor ve denizin sesi hep yanımızda oluyordu. Başka hiçbir şeye ihtiyaç duymadığınız anlardan biriydi.

One of my favorite moments was drinking tea while watching the sunset. The colors slowly changed from blue to soft pink and orange. The sea became quieter and the boats looked different under the evening light. I remember looking at this view and feeling very thankful. Some moments are simple, but they stay in your memory for a long time.

During the day, we sometimes sat outside with coffee or another drink. The house had different little places where you could sit and enjoy the sea. There was also a cat around the house, which made the place even sweeter. I think cats always make a place feel more peaceful.

In the evenings, our plan was very simple. We ate dinner around eight or nine and then watched a movie. During this trip, we watched two films. One was The Help. The other was a Taiwanese movie whose name I unfortunately cannot remember now. I remember that it was a very good and award winning film. Both movies were very different, but we enjoyed them a lot.

Biri The Help filmiydi.

Watching good movies at night was actually my friend’s idea. I really liked it. Normally when we travel, we always think we have to go outside and do something all the time. But sometimes staying inside, having tea and watching a good movie with a friend can be just as special.

On our last day, leaving was not easy. We packed our bags and started walking back toward the center of Büyükada. The road was beautiful but also a little difficult because of the hill. There were so many trees and green areas around us that even the walk felt like part of the holiday.

Before leaving the island, we wanted to enjoy a little more time there. First, we stopped at a hotel and had coffee. The garden was quiet and beautiful. Then we went down to the center and had another coffee before continuing our journey home. I think we were trying to delay our goodbye to the island a little.

Three days may sound short, but sometimes a short trip can give you many memories. I still remember our long breakfasts, the tea, the sunset, the sea, the small boats, the movies and our conversations. More than the places we visited, I think I will remember how peaceful I felt there.

IMG_7916.jpeg

This trip also reminded me how important good friendships are. Going somewhere beautiful is wonderful, but sharing that place with someone you enjoy spending time with makes it even better. You can cook together, talk for hours, watch movies, walk, drink coffee and sometimes simply sit quietly.

IMG_7920.jpeg

If I have the chance, I will definitely stay in Büyükada again. Maybe I will return to the same place, or maybe I will discover another part of the island. But I know one thing. Next time, I would like to stay longer. Three days were beautiful, but they were not enough.

IMG_7922.jpeg

And with this view, my three part Büyükada series comes to an end. Looking back at these photos still makes me happy. I feel lucky that I could see such a beautiful place, spend time with a good friend and collect memories that I will probably remember for many years.
