Three (3) days ago I wrote an article about how the United States government placing a ban on Tornado Cash, a decentralized crypto platform with a high level of privacy when it comes to transactions, which I think was the real reason why Tornado Cash was banned in the U.S. and not the alleged money laundering accusation. Now Netherlands authorities have arrested a suspected Tornado Cash Developer, is it now a crime to be a Crypto Project Development? or is it a crime for them to do their job so well, that the transactions made on the platform are private? which is the main purpose of decentralization in the first place. At this point, it is safe to conclude that the law is after decentralization and privacy.

Are Crypto Developers Not Safe Anymore?

I was so shocked when I saw the News that Netherlands police have reportedly arrested a 29-year-old man in Amsterdam, who is suspected to be Tornado Cash developer and is alleged to have been involved in concealing assets flows and facilitating money laundering through the platform.

The Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD) statement claims that the 29-year-old aided in obscuring illegal cash flows through the crypto mixer and participated in money laundering. Also, investigators claimed that a task force dubbed the Financial Advanced Cyber Team Fact (FACT) launched a probe into the crypto mixer in June 2022. FACT suspects that through Tornado Cash has been used to conceal large-scale criminal money flows, including from (online) thefts of cryptocurrencies (so-called crypto hacks and scams). These included funds stolen through hacks by a group believed to be associated with North Korea.

My Opinion On The Arrest

First of all, I am not saying money laundering is good, but the government is going after the wrong person, the developer did the job that he was paid for to make Tornado Cash transactions private that is not a crime, it is the hackers cleaning their funds with Tornado Cash that need to be chased after and arrested not him, or are we now saying that if McDonald's send a burger to a thief, McDonald's should be arrested? or should all car manufacturers like Elon Musk who owns Tesla should be arrested for hit and runs? let's think about that.
