Aldeia de Porreiras - Paredes de Coura / Riding Portugal

There are places that surprise us with their grandeur, others with their history. And then there are places like Porreiras, a small village in the municipality of Paredes de Coura, which captivated us with its simplicity and authenticity. We visited this place without great expectations, but we left with our hearts full.

Há lugares que nos surpreendem pela sua grandiosidade, outros pela sua história. E depois há sítios como Porreiras, uma pequena aldeia no concelho de Paredes de Coura, que nos cativou pela simplicidade e pela autenticidade. Visitamos esta lugar sem grandes expectativas, mas saímos de lá com o coração cheio.

Porreiras is a village where nature still speaks louder than cement, where the days pass by to the rhythm of the seasons, and where green is not just a color but a way of life. Arriving here is like entering another dimension. The stone houses, many of which still bear traces of traditional architecture, fit perfectly into the slopes. There is silence, but it is not an empty silence. We hear the wind, the birds, the falling leaves. It's the kind of silence that does us good.

Porreiras é uma aldeia onde a natureza ainda fala mais alto do que o cimento, onde os dias correm ao ritmo das estações, e onde o verde não é apenas uma cor mas sim um modo de vida. Chegar aqui é como entrar noutra dimensão. As casas de pedra, muitas delas ainda com marcas da arquitetura tradicional, encaixam-se nas encostas de uma forma perfeita. Há silêncio, mas não é um silêncio vazio. Ouvimos o vento, os pássaros, o cair das folhas. É o tipo de silêncio que nos faz bem.

Walking through the narrow streets of the village, the scenery is enchanting: small cultivated fields, well-kept vegetable gardens, and the famous granaries that I have already shared with you here. These small granite and wood barns, traditionally used to store corn, are true icons of the rural landscape of Minho.

Ao passear pelas ruas estreitas da aldeia, o cenário é encantador: pequenos campos cultivados, hortas bem tratadas, e os famosos espigueiros que já aqui partilhei convosco. Estes pequenos celeiros de granito e madeira, usados tradicionalmente para guardar o milho, são verdadeiros ícones da paisagem rural do Minho.

But the most special moment of the visit happened unexpectedly. As we crossed one of the dirt paths between fields and stone walls, we came across two mares (mother and daughter) that seemed to be part of the landscape as if they had always been there. The youngest, curious and sweet, approached full of confidence. To our amazement, he was carrying a rope in his mouth, as if to say, "Want to give me a ride?" There was no fear in her eyes, just sweetness and a desire to be there with us. He stayed by our side, we had parties and gave him marijuana to eat. It was one of those rare encounters that can only happen in these places.

Mas o momento mais especial da visita aconteceu de forma inesperada. Ao atravessar um dos caminhos de terra batida entre campos e muros de pedra, encontrámos duas éguas ( mãe e filha ) que pareciam fazer parte da paisagem como se ali estivessem desde sempre. A mais pequena, curiosa e meiga, aproximou-se cheia de confiança. Para nosso espanto, trazia na boca uma corda, como quem diz: "Queres dar-me um passeio?" Não havia medo no seu olhar, apenas uma doçura e vontade de estar ali connosco. Ficou ao nosso lado, fizemos festas e demos erva para comer. Foi um daqueles encontros raros que só nestes locais podem acontecer.

The mother, serene and attentive, watched closely. There was an obvious connection between the two, a silent understanding, beautiful to see.
The village also has a modest but well-kept chapel and small fountains scattered throughout the streets, where fresh water still runs. The inhabitants, few but welcoming, wave to those who pass by. There is no rush, no queues, no honking. There is room to breathe.

A mãe, serena e atenta, observava de perto. Havia entre as duas uma ligação evidente, um entendimento silencioso, bonito de se ver.
A aldeia tem ainda uma capela modesta, mas bem cuidada, e pequenas fontes espalhadas pelas ruas, onde ainda corre água fresca. Os habitantes, poucos mas acolhedores, acenam a quem passa. Não há pressas, não há filas, não há buzinas. Há espaço para respirar.

Porreiras is one of those hidden gems in the north of Portugal, where people still live in communion with the land and the animals.
If you have the chance, stop by. Don't expect imposing monuments or major tourist attractions. But come with time, open eyes and an available heart. Porreiras is a small village, but full of everything.

Porreiras é uma dessas pérolas escondidas do norte de Portugal, onde ainda se vive em comunhão com a terra e os animais.
Se tiverem oportunidade, passem por cá. Não esperem monumentos imponentes nem grandes atrações turísticas. Mas venham com tempo, olhos abertos e coração disponível. Porreiras é uma aldeia pequena, mas cheia de tudo.
