Museu do Côa Interior - A&B Território o Homem e o Tempo / Riding Portugal

We continued exploring the museum, a little in the dark, but over time my vision began to adjust and the various points of light also allowed the experience to become pleasant, although the absence of light did not bother me.
This time we explored the A&B room, Territory: Man and Time. It begins with an open corridor that contrasts sharply with the rest of the museum and after the dark and closed environment of the first rooms. And, being already accustomed to the space, it even felt a little strange because there was natural light coming in through a large side opening through which we could peek outside. The floor is still the same smooth cement present throughout the building, but the space seems more spacious and less cramped.

Continuamos a explorar o museu, um pouco às escuras, mas com o passar do tempo a visão começa a adaptar-se e os diversos pontos de luz também permitem que a experiência se torne agradável, embora não me cause desconforto a ausência de luz.
Desta vez exploramos a sala A&B, Território o Homem e o Tempo, começa por um corredor aberto que contrasta bastante com o resto do museu e depois do ambiente escuro e fechado das primeiras salas, e já estando eu ambientada, até me causou um pouco de estranheza pois ali havia luz natural a entrar por uma grande abertura lateral por onde podemos espreitar para o exterior. O chão continua a ser do mesmo cimento liso presente em todo o edifício, mas o espaço parece mais amplo e menos comprimido.

In the center of the room there is a lighter wooden structure, which actually looks more like what's left of a tree trunk, surrounded by thinner and irregular pieces scattered across the floor, and also some cement blocks. I stayed there for a while trying to understand the meaning or if it was simply a kind of art installation to support the documentary playing on the screens projected onto the black walls. A video was playing explaining the history of the dam that was built and the controversy surrounding its construction and negative effects. The subtitles in Portuguese and English alternate with loose phrases projected on the sides: "many small people, doing small things can change the world", "we believed in what we did", "this is the true importance of Côa", "united we fought against an empire". It's not exactly a traditional documentary, it's more of a succession of images and text that functions as a turning point within the exhibition.

No centro da sala está uma estrutura de madeira mais clara, que na verdade mais parece ser o que resta de um tronco de uma árvore, rodeado por pedaços mais finos e irregulares espalhados pelo chão, e também alguns blocos de cimento. Ainda fiquei ali algum tempo a tentar perceber qual o significado ou se se trataria simplesmente de uma espécie de instalação artística para dar suporte ao documentário que estava a passar nas telas projetadas nas paredes pretas. Ali passava um vídeo a explicar a história da barragem que foi construída e da polémica da construção e dos efeitos negativos. As legendas em português e inglês alternam com frases soltas projetadas nos lados: “muita Gente pequena, a fazer pequenas coisas pode mudar o mundo”, “acreditávamos no que fazíamos”, “é a verdadeira importância de Côa”, “unidos lutamos contra um império”. Não é exatamente um documentário tradicional, é mais uma sucessão de imagens e texto que funciona como ponto de viragem dentro da exposição.

In another room, it is possible to see several examples of stones and raw materials collected on site, demonstrating that human presence in that valley is much older than is usually thought.
On the left side there is a kind of acrylic column with stones inside. Each level has a date underneath, things like 32,000 years, 27,000. The stones are the real stones, small, nothing like pretty replicas. On the other side, on the dark wall, there's a blue line representing the river and some names above it. It's quite simple, it looks rushed.

Numa outra sala, é possível visualizar vários exemplares de pedras e matérias primas recolhidas no local, demonstrando que naquele vale a presença humana é muito mais antiga do que normalmente se pensa.
Do lado esquerdo há uma espécie de coluna de acrílico com pedras por dentro. Cada andar tem uma data por baixo, coisas como 32 mil anos, 27 mil. As pedras são mesmo as pedras, pequenas, nada de réplicas bonitas. Do outro lado, na parede escura, tem um traço azul que representa o rio e uns nomes por cima. É bem simples, parece feito à pressa.

Further back, almost touching the wall, there's an outline of an animal made with blue light. It's just the outline, nothing more. It reflects on the floor and is quite noticeable because of the contrast.
There are no windows anywhere, just that opening on one side that lets in some light. The rest is mostly in shadow. The spotlights are pointed at the pieces, but the space between them is dark. You can move around easily, it's not cramped.

Mais no fundo, quase encostado à parede, aparece um contorno de animal feito a luz azul. É só o traçado, nada mais. Reflete no chão e nota-se bastante por causa do contraste.
Não há janelas em lado nenhum, só aquela abertura de um lado que deixa entrar alguma claridade. O resto fica bastante na sombra. Os focos estão apontados para as peças, mas o espaço entre elas fica escuro. Dá para circular bem, não está apertado.

I felt this room mixes two things at the same time. On the one hand, it shows the old layers, the stones with the dates, and on the other, it places the more recent history of the valley in the middle. The phrases on the wall aren't subtle, but they don't try to be anything else either. It's just what's there.
Overall, it seemed like a more open space than the previous rooms. Less cluttered. Perhaps because of the light that comes in or because there's more empty space between things.

Achei que esta sala mistura duas coisas ao mesmo tempo. Por um lado mostra as camadas antigas, as pedras com as datas, e por outro mete no meio a história mais recente do vale. As frases na parede não são subtis, mas também não tentam ser outra coisa. É só o que está lá.
No geral, pareceu-me um espaço mais solto do que as salas anteriores. Menos carregado. Talvez por causa da luz que entra ou por ter mais espaço vazio entre as coisas.
