That lake up there surrounded by snow reminded me of my experience at Lai da Rims in Switzerland (2000m high). I hope I manage to do NZ one day. An ex colleague of mine told me it's the cleanest country she's ever been.

Yeah I guess it's somehow similar to Swiss, it's all alpine area.
Your friend is right, I think the government and local people have done a good job in preserving the natural environment.
If you're into nature, this is the place to be, highly recommended! 😎
