ESPAÑOL.jpg Imagina que eres escritor/compositor de Teatro Musical, vives en Nueva York trabajando como mesero para poder pagar la renta en un apartamento en pésimas condiciones, has pasado los últimos 8 años de tu vida escribiendo un musical al que le has dedicado todo tu esfuerzo y al fin después de tanto tiempo y esfuerzo lo presentarás ante productores importantes para intentar impresionarlos y que quieran llevarlo a Broadway; y no conforme con toda esta presión en tan solo una semana cumples 30 años.

Pues este es el escenario que nos presenta: tick, tick…BOOM!, un musical autobiográfico que relata este punto de la vida de Jonathan Larson, el autor de el famoso musical de Broadway: Rent. La película de Netflix está dirigida por mi ídolo: Lin-Manuel Miranda (el autor y protagonista de Hamilton) quien, entre otros muchos proyectos, también ha trabajado como compositor del soundtrack de la película de Disney: Encanto. Así mismo esta película está protagonizada por el amor de mi vida: Andrew Garfield, actor sumamente conocido por su interpretación de Peter Parker en The Amazing Spiderman, además de muchos otros proyectos.

En general esta película es una maravilla con la que muchos pueden sentirse identificados, especialmente si eres artista o estás cerca de los 30 años. Así que procederé a desglosarla punto por punto.

Imagine you are a Musical Theatre writer/composer, you live in New York City working as a waiter to pay the rent in an apartment in terrible conditions, you have spent the last 8 years of your life writing a musical to which you have dedicated all your effort and finally after so much time and effort you will present it to important producers to try to impress them and make them want to take it to Broadway; and not satisfied with all this pressure, in just one week you will be 30 years old.

Well this is the scenario that presents us: tick, tick...BOOM! an autobiographical musical that tells this point in the life of Jonathan Larson, the author of the famous Broadway musical: Rent. The Netflix movie is directed by my idol: Lin-Manuel Miranda (the author and star of Hamilton) who, among many other projects, has also worked as composer of the soundtrack of the Disney movie: Enchantment. This film also stars the love of my life: Andrew Garfield, an actor well known for his portrayal of Peter Parker in The Amazing Spiderman, in addition to many other projects.

Overall this movie is a marvel that many can relate to, especially if you are an artist or close to 30 years old. So I will proceed to break it down point by point.

Aspecto emocional | Emotional aspect


Personalmente esta película me tocó muchísimo emocionalmente y creo que ese fue el caso de muchas personas. Pude identificarme como artista con esa ansiedad y desesperación por cumplir tus sueños, sentir que el tiempo corre y que tal vez no vas a lograr lo que tanto quieres, en especial en un medio tan reñido y competitivo como el del espectáculo. Al mismo tiempo me identifiqué mucho con el tema financiero, el querer dedicarte por completo a tu pasión, pero sentirte ahogado económicamente porque lamentablemente es bastante difícil vivir del arte.

Algo que yo misma he experimentado es el multitrabajo para pagar cosas relacionadas al arte que haces, en este caso él lo hizo para contratar los músicos que necesitaba, yo lo he hecho para pagar vestuarios. Sentía su frustración, pero al mismo tiempo su pasión y ganas de hacer las cosas.

De igual manera la película te invita a reflexionar sobre el compararte con otros. Jonathan se comparaba muchísimo con Stephen Sondheim que debutó en Broadway a los 27 años, mientras que él ya estaba cerca de los 30 y no tenía ofertas de ningún tipo. También se comparaba mucho con su mejor amigo quien había dejado la actuación por un trabajo en Publicidad que le daba mucha estabilidad económica. Al final la película nos enseña que esas comparaciones no son sanas y que cada persona va a su propio ritmo.

Otra cosa que aborda la película es la comunicación en las relaciones de pareja, algo que tanto Jonathan como su novia Susan no manejaron bien y los llevó a su ruptura e incluso hay un tema musical sobre este asunto en la película.

Personally, this film touched me emotionally and I think that was the case for many people. I could identify myself as an artist with that anxiety and desperation to fulfill your dreams, feeling that time is running out and that maybe you are not going to achieve what you want so much, especially in such a tight and competitive environment as show business. At the same time I identified a lot with the financial issue, wanting to dedicate yourself completely to your passion, but feeling economically suffocated because unfortunately it is very difficult to make a living from art.

Something that I myself have experienced is the multi-jobbing to pay for things related to the art you do, in this case he did it to hire the musicians he needed, I have done it to pay for costumes. I felt his frustration, but at the same time his passion and desire to do things.

In the same way the film invites you to reflect on comparing yourself to others. Jonathan compared himself a lot to Stephen Sondheim who made his Broadway debut at the age of 27, while he was already close to 30 and had no offers of any kind. He also compared himself a lot to his best friend who had left acting for a job in advertising that gave him a lot of economic stability. In the end the film teaches us that these comparisons are not healthy and that each person goes at his or her own pace.

Another thing that the film addresses is communication in relationships, something that both Jonathan and his girlfriend Susan did not handle well and led to their breakup and there is even a musical theme about this issue in the film.

Música | Music


Claramente sería una ofensa hacer una reseña sobre un musical sin hablar de la música. Algo que me gusta mucho es que Jonathan Larson siempre se caracterizó por usar estilos musicales distintos en sus obras y este no es la excepción. Mientras que normalmente los musicales están impregnados de Jazz, música clásica y géneros parecidos, Tick Tick Boom está impregnado por géneros como el Rock y el R&B. Tiene canciones muy emotivas y también bastante pegadizas.

Mi top 3 de canciones es el siguiente:

Clearly it would be an offense to review a musical without talking about the music. Something I really like is that Jonathan Larson has always been known for using different musical styles in his works and this one is no exception. While normally musicals are infused with Jazz, classical music and similar genres, Tick Tick Boom is infused with genres like Rock and R&B. It has songs that are very emotional and also quite catchy.

My top 3 songs are as follows:


1. Therapy

Esta canción nos muestra los patrones de comunicación tóxicos de Jonathan y Susan, utilizando el recurso del canon para enseñar como no escuchaban las necesidades del otro. Simplemente una joya de canción.
This song shows us the toxic communication patterns of Jonathan and Susan, using the canon to show how they did not listen to each other's needs. Simply a gem of a song.


2. 30/90

Es la primera canción de la película y resume los sentimientos de Jonathan por cumplir 30 años y sentir que se le acababa el tiempo para triunfar en la vida.
It is the first song in the film and sums up Jonathan's feelings about turning 30 and feeling that he was running out of time to succeed in life.


3. Boho Days

Esta canción es corta, es Acappella y simplemente muy pegajosa. Refleja la vida de Jonathan y su grupo de amigos jóvenes artistas en Nueva York.
This song is short, it's Acappella and just plain catchy. It reflects the life of Jonathan and his group of young artist friends in New York.


Guión | Script


Tal como mencioné, este es un musical autobiográfico escrito por Jonathan Larson quien murió a la edad de 35 años. Así que utilizaron elementos de la narrativa original de Larson quien lo pensó originalmente como un monólogo, pero agregaron a los personajes de su entorno para dar sensación de realismo. Mientras tanto la mayoría de los números musicales si formaban parte de la presentación en público del monólogo.

Me gustó mucho la manera en que fue realizada la adaptación y sobre todo que brindaran ese homenaje al trabajo de Jonathan Larson al final.

As I mentioned, this is an autobiographical musical written by Jonathan Larson who died at the age of 35. So they used elements of Larson's original narrative who originally intended it as a monologue, but added characters from his background to give a sense of realism. Meanwhile most of the musical numbers were part of the public presentation of the monologue.

I really liked the way the adaptation was done and especially that they paid tribute to Jonathan Larson's work at the end.

Actuación | Acting


Normalmente en mis reseñas hablo de varios personajes al hablar de la actuación, pero en este caso solo hablaré de Andrew Garfield interpretando a Jonathan Larson porque me voló la mente por completo.

La primera vez que vi a Andrew Garfield actuar fue en El sorprendente hombre araña, luego de eso comencé a conocer más de su trabajo. Nunca lo había visto como un actor que pudiera hacer cine musical, a pesar de lo buen actor que es. Pero simplemente pensaba que no era lo suyo. Tomando esto en cuenta, cuando vi que él era el protagonista tuve una duda sobre la misma pero definitivamente me equivoqué.

Andrew cumplió muy bien el personaje y el reto musical. Tiene una voz preciosa e hizo cada canción suya, sin dejar a un lado la esencia de Jonathan Larson. Aparte de que cuenta con una actuación muy sentida que era vital para el personaje. 10/10 para Andrew interpretando a Jonathan.

Normally in my reviews I talk about several characters when talking about the acting, but in this case I'll just talk about Andrew Garfield playing Jonathan Larson because it completely blew my mind.

The first time I saw Andrew Garfield act was in The Amazing Spider-Man, after that I started to learn more about his work. I had never seen him as an actor who could do musical films, as good an actor as he is. But I just didn't think it was his thing. Taking this into account, when I saw that he was the lead I had a doubt about it but I was definitely wrong.

Andrew met the character and the musical challenge very well. He has a beautiful voice and made every song his own, without leaving aside the essence of Jonathan Larson. Aside from that he has a very heartfelt performance that was vital to the character. 10/10 for Andrew playing Jonathan.

Andrew Garfield did excellent in this movie, I loved his performance. The music of course another highlight, especially for being a musical.

She was a bit away from Hive, what happened, too much work or university studies? her mother also stopped posting.

I didn't understand it, and for me it was the first Andrew G movie that I fell asleep watching haha, but the one he did where he was a soldier was very good.

Dios mío, que buena reseña, apenas empecé a leerla me engancho, realmente muchas personas me recomendaron ver esta película pero hice caso omiso porque la forma en la que me la explicaban no me llamaba la atención, pero tú lograste hacerlo y sin duda esta película será la primera que vea el fin de semana. Además que como tú yo también amo a Andrew desde spiderman, el carisma y talento del actor es indudable, así que ahora estoy emocionada por verlo en esta película, saludos.
