BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! FEROCITY

image.png

Hello there.

Today I'll share my battle under the Ferocity ruleset. But first, I will share some of my thoughts regarding it. With this ruleset, all monsters get the Fury ability. Monsters with Fury deal double damage to monsters with the Taunt ability. While this is pretty simple, it actually weakens a lot of the sustain teams. If the battle has a high mana available, it can be difficult to maximize it without the taunt monsters.

With players hesitating to use Taunt monsters, abilities that target the backline will see an uptick. There is also the option of just going front to back since they can focus their attack. But even with Ferocity, the possibility of facing a Taunt monster is still there. I have used Slipspawn with Immortalis in a Magic only ruleset before.

I believe that being flexible in battle is the ideal strategy. Check the opponent's history, check what they are most likely to use, and counter it. But always pick teams that can also counter different strategies. Without further ado, let's get into the battle.

The Ruleset

This was a Diamond/Champ Wild battle with Fire and Regret, Ferocity, and Fab Four Rulesets. A 41 mana battle is on the high amount, and only Earth, Death, and Dragon are available. I can think of a lot of different strategies for each so I will try to counter as much as I can.

The ideal team for Earth is Immortalis with Mycelic Infantry to counter both Melee and Magic attacks. Goblin Psychic can be good to provide some sustain while also applying Affliction. Grund is risky since Death can use Windeku and deal a lot of damage.

For Death, Thaddius with Windeku is expected. Since magic attacks are decreased, and range attacks are discouraged, using Helheim Demon can be an option even though there is Ferocity. It can split the damage, and provide some tankiness for the team.

For Dragon, Sthispa is an option, while using Chwala and Chaos Dragon. Dragon has a lot of high mana monsters, so they can easily maximize the available mana.

The Lineup

CardAbilityComments
image.pngIncreases the Speed of ally monsters by 1 and has ConscriptGladiator cards are really strong so I want to use them. I also want to increase my Speed to hopefully attack first.
image.pngThornsChwala is a really strong tank with Thorns. It has good HP and armor, so it can survive for a long time.
image.pngBloodlust, HealMy secondary tank, and main damage dealer. Quora is the main threat in the team, and I hope it can get a lot of kills so it becomes unkillable.
image.pngProtectI need the Protect so that if Quora gets a kill, it can keep on refreshing its armor afterwards. Being a cheap card with attack helps too.
image.pngTank Heal, AfflictionI want to support my Chwala and Quora with the Tank Heal, and the Affliction will be helpful in preventing my opponent to heal their team.

For me, against the lineups I mentioned above, I'd rather go with a Quora team. I'm expecting my opponent to go front to back so I used a double heal strategy. I don't expect much backline attacks, since doing so will split the damage, and with just 4 monsters, it could be lacking.

The Matchup

My opponent decided to go with a Gladiator team that I did not consider. They used Katrelba instead. They also used Terraceous Hulk even though there is Ferocity. It does make sense though, since it uses up a lot of the mana, and it can take a lot of damage. Katrelba hitting my back line is a bit of a problem though. I hope my Quora can get a stack quickly to get the armor stack.

End of Round 1

The Hulk living with 5HP left is a heartbreaker. My Quora can only do 4 damage with Fury, so it won't get the stack. Their Katrelba on the other hand dealt a lot of damage on my Goblin Psychic and is poised to get a stack next round. This isn't looking to good right now.

End of Round 2

The Hulk is finally dead, and I can now focus on the front monster. Regal Peryton is a tricky monster since it is fast and has Flying. At this point, I'm hoping we can kill it quickly so I can put Katrelba in front and hurt itself from the Thorns damage. My Quora won't survive for long against its attacks.

End of Round 3

My Chwala missing its attack there is painful. I needed it to hit so that my Quora can get a stack next round, while also putting Katrelba in front. I still have one more chance on it though, and I'm really hoping it won't miss a second time.

End of Round 4

My Quora going down to 1HP at one point was scary. Fortunately, Chwala was able to hit its attack against the Peryton and Quora lives to fight another round. Chwala having 6HP and Katrelba at 5 attack is huge. It means it won't be able to kill Quora next round, while also taking 4 damage. I might still have a chance to win.

Quora clutches it out. With my luck, I was scared that Quora might miss its Melee attack. Luckily it did not, and I got the win. I was honestly surprised that I won that. Katrelba is usually a good counter to Quora, and they almost had it. I was curious on how close the battle was, so checked it in the battlevision:

I was surprised to see that I was the favorite in that battle. It looked like I got lucky with the hit and that gave me the win, but the simulator doesn't see it that way. Either way, I'll take that win.

Conclusion

In my battles, I try to make it a point to look at the possible teams and imagine them fighting against one another. I will then use a team which I think is best against. For this specific battle, my opponent used a team composition that I wasn't ready for. It went down to the wire, but I am thankful that I got the win.
