Experience Isn't A Good Teacher But Can Be The Best Teacher.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, Amos and Sarah agreed to go swimming in the pool across their street. Amos loved his sister so much that he was willing to do anything within his capacity to make her happy, that's the reason why he didn't give it a second thought when she suggested they go swimming.

Amos isn't a good swimmer neither is his sister but they often meet a trainer at the pool side whenever they go to swim. They packed their swimming costumes inside their shuttle bags and boarded a bike to the pool ground. Sarah was eager to enter the water but Amos kept insisting their trainer come and direct them on what to do. Moreover the swimming rings were nowhere to be found around the pool area.

“Bro, we can start swimming in the shallow area of the pool before the instructor comes over to show us what to do,” Sarah spoke in a soft tune to her brother.

“I am not a good swimmer and you know we are not supposed to get into the water without an expert around to supervise us”

Sarah wore a pensive face and was expecting a change of mind from her brother, and yes he did but informed the people drinking around the pool side that they were going into the water to swim.

“Sarah, you could swim to the shallow side and avoid the deep area please,” her brother lamented. One can tell from the brothers' looks and conversation that he didn't want them to go into the water without their swimming coach supervision but he let his sister's desire override the important thing they were supposed to do. Sarah never cared about those things as a little girl, all she wanted was to get into the water.
“Amos, can you swim with your back facing the water?”

“Why? I told you I can't swim”

“Okay, relax I'm going to show you something” Sarah smiled while talking to her brother.

Sarah didn't even know when she got herself into a pickle, it was as if the water waves drew her to the deep side of the pool.

“Sarah! Sarah!!” Her brother called out her name loudly but at that moment Sarah was battling between life and death. Amos' voice was loud enough to draw the attention of the people drinking beside the pool. Amos in that condition forgot that he didn't also know how to swim, he was curious to save his drowning sister; he then dived into the deep ends of the water also. At this moment they were all in a pickle before help came from outside.

Two people from the people drinking by the pool rushed into the pool and saved Amos and his sister. At that time Sarah had drunk a lot of water already and her eyes were red as if she cried very much, she was fully conscious but sitting weak and surprised of how the whole thing happened. She turned and looked at her brother with a pitiful face, “I am sorry Amos, I got us into this deep mess”. Amos appreciated the people that helped them once more and told his sister they should start going home, he held his sister by the hands while they walked majestically along the road of their street.

“We could have gotten drunk and died” Amos calmly spoke to his sister, she looked at him with teary eyes and told him sorry again. He rounded his hands over her shoulders and told her not to worry it is fine. The two of them were saved from drowning that day and Sarah never suggested they go swimming again. They got home and didn't want to get into another pickle with their parents.

“Sweethearts, hope you all had a good day?”

“Yes mummy, they answered amicably while they walked to their rooms”. They didn't play the whole day because of the trauma from the last event but later got themselves back. It wasn't a good experience for them but they learned not to enter the water without the supervision or their swimming coach. Experience shouldn’t have been the teacher for them but then it was the best teacher for them.

This is my entry for this week's fiction prompt “Pickle” from the inkwell community. I honestly appreciate all the suggestions from the community to make me a good writer, thank you and I look forward to learning more from this community of inkwell..

Thank goodness Amos and his sister didn't drown in the swimming pool. They really learned from experience though.

There is nothing so risky as children near open water without adult supervision! You did a nice job of creating suspense in this story, @ovey10. Thank you for joining the "pickle" prompt, and for reading and commenting on the work of other community members. It's nice to see your writing skills developing!
