Akeelah And The Bee - A Blueprint For Personal Growth

I don't really think I have a favorite movie, but there are a handful of movies that have stuck with me, most of which inspired me a lot, and one of them is Akeelah and the Bee.

The story in a nutshell

The movie tells the story of a brilliant eleven-year-old, Akeelah Anderson, who was living in a tough neighborhood. Her class teacher and principal noticed how smart she was with words and encouraged her to enter the Crenshaw Spelling Bee.

At first she refused but was later threatened by the principal to be put in detention for missing classes, and she reluctantly agreed to it.

During the school spelling bee, they had a visiting English professor, Dr. Joshua Larabee, who was impressed by Akeelah's performance and believes she actually had a chance of winning the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Dr. Larabee became her coach and taught her all she needed to know, not just vocabulary but also strategies on how to stay focused, confidence, and resilience.

The movie is so inspiring because it shows that no matter the neighborhood we grew up in or where we are in life, we can also find our strength if we are determined, just like Akeelah, who found her strength in spelling. Despite living in a tough neighborhood, she didn't allow her neighborhood to limit her.

There's also the power of mentorship to learn. In the movie, Dr. Larabee's guidance was far beyond learning spellings; he taught her to believe in herself, patience, and also the importance of having someone in your life who sees your potential even when you don't.

It also teaches about how if you are determined, have the right support, and also believe in yourself, then there aren't any obstacles you can't overcome, and achieving your dreams is also possible.

Another thing I learned from the movie was that brilliance can bloom anywhere. Akeelah was a shy little girl who never thought she would be able to stand in front of her classmates and talk to more than thousands of people, but we saw how she transformed from a shy girl to a confident one who could speak up and take risks.

The movie is really a good watch for someone who hasn't seen it before, it's far beyond entertainment, it's a blueprint for personal growth.
