A LEGENDARY MARCELO [ENG/ESP]

"It's a very nice moment. When you're first captain you dream of lifting the cup and I've become the only Brazilian to lift the Champions League as captain of Real Madrid. The emotion is brutal, it was my last game for Real Madrid, but I'm very happy. It's not a day of sadness, I'm leaving with a lot of joy, grateful to the fans and the magical nights I've experienced at the Bernabéu." - Marcelo on confirming that he is leaving the club of his love after winning the UEFA Champions League in the final in Paris.

On 14th November 2006, at just 18 years of age, a young left-back arrived in the Spanish capital from Brazilian side Fluminense; Ramón Calderón, then president of Real Madrid, called him "the replacement for Roberto Carlos"; an extremely compromising label since, for a youth player, the thought of filling the shoes of a historic full-back of the standing of Roberto Carlos could be lapidary, but Marcelo was never afraid to do so.

It was then that the man who, without knowing it, would become a white legend made his debut... on 7 January 2007 against Deportivo La Coruña Marcelo replaced Michel Salgado and the rest would be a long road, a story full of joys and sorrows, of glorious victories and painful defeats, but always the story of an eternal love, that of Marcelo for the white shirt and the Real Madrid Club de Fútbol crest.

The first few years at Real Madrid were difficult for him to adapt, but Marcelo did not give up; during that time at Real Madrid the parade of coaches was varied and the left-back was often prevented from playing his attacking and eye-catching football, on some occasions he was reconverted to left winger and there, due to his attacking vocation, he was lethal.

The victories and titles came as the seasons went by and Marcelo's trophy cabinet and his contribution to the Casa Blanca trophy room grew richer and richer. By the 2010-2011 season, Marcelo had become the third captain of the team behind Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos, and his first captaincy came on 10 May 2011 in a 4-0 win over Getafe.

Marcelo has been crucial to the Merengues' aspirations for a large part of the 16 seasons in which he has honourably defended the white shirt. 546 games played for Madrid, 38 goals scored while playing as a defender and 101 assists are evidence of the tremendous attacking contribution of the youngster who came to replace Roberto Carlos, but was able to surpass him.

16 seasons, an insurmountable love story and an undeniable track record for many, Marcelo Vieira Da Silva Junior bids farewell to the Club of his life, to the team of his love, to the place where he wrote his legend and, for several years, established himself as the best left-back on the face of the earth.

With the achievement of LaLiga this season and the fourteenth European Cup for Los Merengues, Marcelo has reached the celebrated figure of 25 titles won under the discipline of Real Madrid and, in doing so, has surpassed the famous Paco Gento as the greatest winner of titles at the Casa Blanca. Marcelo leaves Real Madrid in style, with the affection of the fans and the glory of his legend under his arm.

What a story and history Marcelo have with Real Madrid. Skilful, energetic, risk taker and a winner. An era has ended and he was a loyal servant to Real Madrid. All the best to him.
