Mi organización con un bullet journal // My organization with a bullet journal

avatar

¡Hola!

ENGLISH VERSION

Hello!

Since I've been writing on Hive I've mentioned more than once (here, here and here) that I use a bullet journal. Today I want to tell you what it is and how I use it, in case it would be useful to someone else. The magic of this method is that it is customizable down to the smallest details. You can do it the way you want or need.

Ah, in Spanish they may also talk about vignette journal instead of bullet journal or, if you translate it, bullet journal; just know that in both cases they refer to the same thing.

Why bullet journal?

I was tired of trying applications, workflows, different types of planners,... nothing worked for me. I ended up with a pile of unused paper or with notes piled up and unreadable. Of course, when I needed a piece of information that I knew I had written down somewhere, there was no human way to find it.

Since January 1, this has changed radically, and with hardly any money invested. All you need is any notebook you can find around the house and a pen (or pencil if you like).

The bullet journal method was devised by Ryder Carroll. Quickly summarized, it consists of organizing all tasks, reminders and notes in a notebook. *I emphasize this detail because if you go browsing the internet, you might have a stroke with what you will find. There are beautiful designs, full of drawings and colors. In my case they only serve to distract me from my objective (getting organized, that's all) and they stress me out, so I keep a minimalist design.

The key is to number the pages, to be able to locate the information in the future. There are notebooks that come already numbered, although if you do it by hand it takes a while.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'm going to show you my own bullet journal while I tell you what each part consists of.

9bc71902_3e5c_4f86_ac13_091040e251ea_1_201_a.jpeg

Let's start with the exterior: I practiced for a few days with a used notebook that was unfinished. If it didn't fit me, the loss would be meager. When I felt comfortable and ready, I decided to move on to a new notebook. I chose as my notebook a Leuchtturm 1917 dotted and A5 size. I love the feel of the paper although I warn you that it is somewhat thin, 80 gr. It is an item that may seem expensive, but considering that I use it every day at any time the return is assured.

The pen is a Pilot Frixion ball pen 0.5 thick. You'll see in the following photos that there are a couple of different thicknesses. That's because I started with the same pen but 0.7 thick. When I bought refills they sent me the thinner ones and they have turned out to be better for my way of writing, the writing is cleaner and on top of that they wear out more slowly as they lose less ink when I use them. One refill lasts me more than two months.

d17749b7_3958_4dd1_b462_c4b5b9b8c1ee_1_201_a.jpeg

Index: This is the basis of the whole method. It's amazing how something as simple as this element makes it easy to find what you need in a matter of seconds. In it we write down the name and page of the sections as we incorporate them.

482a0357_f5e6_4b38_bc7c_cd0db7179520_1_201_a.jpeg

Legend: I don't need it anymore because I have learned the symbols, but at the beginning it is very good to get used to them. You can start customizing here by using your own symbols or incorporating colors. For my next bullet journal this list will be reduced to half because these are the ones I actually use.

4fb65690_cdc0_421a_952b_405434db79c3_1_201_a.jpeg

Future record: These are four pages where you can write down events and tasks with a fixed date. Here are birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, meetings, the concert of your favorite singer, the release date of the movie of that actor you like so much.

18b9f40c_e8a8_44da_89ef_a7ecd40124ae_1_201_a.jpeg

Monthly record: As you can see, it couldn't be simpler. It is a list with the numbers of the days. I like to add the initial of the day of the week and mark the days we don't work at home, this is to taste. The symbol ^ is a mere orientation so as not to confuse me of day, as a verification sign.

I dedicate the back page to write down the tasks and events of the month that do not have a specific date of completion. At the bottom, I keep track of the household chores that make me the most lazy. This way, when I delay them, I feel remorse and do my best to cross them off.

48b54c4c_c956_4dc8_80ba_ce9fd4e64c20_1_201_a.jpeg

Daily log: When I sit down to plan the day ahead, I look to see if I have any household chores to do and add them. Then I look at the monthly log for both that day and the monthly task list. If I can incorporate any for that day, I add that as well.

As the day goes by I write down what I feel like remembering or keeping in mind later, I add tasks that come up as I go along, and I also write down reflections or impressions of what I experience. For example, this post had its corresponding annotation when I had the idea, hehe.

96b5eacf_4179_40b6_9802_424954b81587_1_201_a.jpeg

Collections: They are the complement that rounds this method and who make it exclusive for you. You can add as many collections as you want, in the order you want and when you need them. It is as simple as going to the next blank page, typing the title, adding it to the index and dumping what you need.

The most common collections are lists. They can be of books you want to read or those you have already read. The same for movies or series. Some people make one for what they want to take in their suitcase on their next vacation. Others write down famous quotes that resonate with them. You can use one of them, all of them or none of them. It's up to you.

The danger of collections is that at first you get excited and want to make a collection for anything. And that's not bad in and of itself. But you have to maintain them. They're no good if you write down four items and never look at the list again.

Anyway, it will most likely happen to you like it does to everyone else, you'll screw up and you'll learn. New challenge unlocked!

Migrations

Migrations are the process we follow when a month ends and we prepare the next one. I like to do them a couple of days before the end. I turn that time into a ritual where I review how the previous month went and set two or three goals for the month ahead. I carry over the events and tasks from the future log for that month and carry over anything that may have been left uncompleted. I do my household chore check.

If you want to know more

If this post stimulates your curiosity, in the references I leave you the link to the official website of the method, where you have more content to go deeper. I also add the link to the book on Amazon.

Although it may seem complicated, in a couple of months practicing you get the necessary inertia. Then it is a matter of learning from your mistakes.

The best thing is that you can make a thousand and one mistakes, it doesn't matter. For perfectionists this is a very interesting detail, because it is impossible to do everything right the first time no matter how hard we try. Thanks to the bullet journal I am taming this aspect and I allow myself to test, correct and improve. I allow myself to make mistakes and that's how I improve as a person.

What about you, do you know this method? If you practice it, tell me how you do it, I will be happy to exchange ideas.

I've seen these before - and I started one!!! but then.... I stopped LOL

I couldn't get my mind to be trained to always go to the journal!

but i know that when I have lists - things flow so much nicer! hehehehe but seems that I wasn't really sticking with it!

I have seen little apps and such on your phone that are almost like this too - but again. i don't know why I don't stop to write the notes down !!! hahahahaha

so its working so well for you??? it seems like it! because you've got a full journal! hehehehe

thanks for sharing this idea - it reminds me to try again maybe hehehe

Each brain is different, neither better nor worse, just different. It also depends on how many things you need to remember. If you're a memory with legs, you don't need a list, hahaha.

Seriously, the only way to find what works best for you is to experiment until you find your method. Don't stop trying!!

Thank you for your laughter, sincerity, and time to read and comment. I appreciate it. 🤗

Gracias por pasarte a leer y comentar, @lormez16 🤗

This looks very interesting although it seems like a lot of hardwork given how we've moved from analog method of storing information to the digital method. I feel like one needs to be very meticulous with storing information this way as you have to write down the information first, know the number of pages it contains before going to the index to fit it in right?

What are the symbols for? It seems old fashioned but something I'd love to try

It is simpler than it seems. You don't have to calculate the space at the beginning, but you write what you need and then you write it down in the index to find it in the future. Sometimes you write just one line and sometimes a whole page, it doesn't matter.

I encourage you to try it, @zyzymena . Use any notebook you have started and then you have little to lose. 😉

Thank you very much for your visit, you are always welcome. 🤗❤️
