[Esp-Eng] Academy day: Learning to suture - Aprendiendo a suturar

Hola Hive!! Espero que su semana esté pasando de maravilla.. Una de las rotaciones o servicios por los que pasé el semestre que recién termino fue traumatología. Antes de empezar a rotar por el, mis expectativas eran altas, incluso antes de verla ya le tenía cierto cariño a esta especialidad. Sin embrago, al comenzarla creo que no fue lo que esperaba, no tanto por el hecho de las clases, sino por lo agotador que fue. A pesar de que siento que es una rotación a la que se le puede sacar mucho provecho, el horario y los profesores por seguir un "esquema" lo hacen un poco tedioso y desalentador. Pero, por suerte, así terminemos este servicio académicamente hablando, los doctores y residentes siempre están dispuestos a recibirte en las guardias, orientarte y que vivas el día a día de una guardia por Traumatología, donde les aseguro llegan pacientes con eventos que nos quedamos en shock jejeje.

Toda esta rotación la viví durante un mes, y una de las cosas que más me gustó fue realizar un curso de sutura, dictado por los residentes del Postgrado. Siempre en mi universidad están haciendo cursos de sutura, sin embargo no había podido asistir a ninguno, en esta ocasión como era yo la que estaba cursando precisamente la materia y somos nosotros mismos quienes organizan el curso, no podía dejar pasar la oportunidad.

Hi Hive!!! I hope your week is going wonderfully.... One of the rotations or services I spent the semester I just finished was traumatology. Before I started rotating through it, my expectations were high, even before I saw it I had a certain fondness for this specialty. However, when I started it, I think it was not what I expected, not so much because of the classes, but because of how exhausting it was. Although I feel that it is a rotation that you can get a lot out of, the schedule and the professors for following a "scheme" make it a little tedious and discouraging. But, fortunately, even if we finish this service academically speaking, doctors and residents are always willing to welcome you in the guards, guide you and live the day to day of a guard for Traumatology, where I assure you patients arrive with events that leave us in shock hehehehe.
I lived this whole rotation for a month, and one of the things I liked the most was to take a suturing course, taught by the Postgraduate residents. In my university they are always doing suturing courses, however I had not been able to attend any, on this occasion as I was the one who was studying precisely the subject and we are the ones who organize the course, I could not miss the opportunity.

El día del curso llegó y teníamos todo a la mano. Nos sentamos en nuestras mesas y ya teníamos en ella todo lo que necesitaríamos, teníamos pinzas, guantes quirúrgicos (aunque no eran de mi talla), algunos de los diferentes tipos de suturas, y lo más importante, una pata de cochino con la que practicar jejej, así practicamos con lo más cercano a la realidad.

La información teórica estuvo excelente, recordamos las ventajas y desventajas de los diferentes tipos de suturas y cuales preferir en diferentes ocasiones y tejidos del cuerpo donde deban ser empleados y también el conocimiento acerca de los tipos de nudos que podemos usar en la práctica médica. Cuando llegamos a la parte practica fue lo mejor, pues ahí era donde íbamos a aprender a hacer los diferentes tipos de puntos, y el buen manejo tanto de las pinzas y las suturas, aprendiendo de la mejor forma para aplicarlo en el futuro.

The day of the course arrived and we had everything at hand. We sat at our tables and we had everything we would need, we had tweezers, surgical gloves, some of the different types of sutures, and most importantly, a pig's foot to practice with hehehe, so we practiced with the closest thing to reality.
The theoretical information was excellent, we remembered the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of sutures and which to prefer in different occasions and tissues of the body where they should be used and also the knowledge about the types of knots that we can use in medical practice. When we got to the practical part was the best, because that was where we were going to learn how to do the different types of stitches, and the good handling of both forceps and sutures, learning the best way to apply it in the future.

Debo confesar que no es tan fácil como parece, ya sabemos que todo es practica y era mi primera vez. Tomar la pinza de la manera correcta a veces constaba, porque tendíamos a agarrarla como una tijera normal y no es así. Tambien, la sutura al pasar por el tejido no pasa tan fácil, hay que ejercer una fuerza prudente. Y lo mismo con cada tipo de puntos, cada uno tenía su detalle. Aprendimos cómo hacer el de puntos simples, los separados en forma de X y aprendimos también la sutura subdérmica.

El curso duraba 2 horas, y de verdad que el tiempo pasó volando mientras aprendíamos, fue increíble, incluso queríamos seguir suturando pero ya debíamos culminar el curso y seguir con el día de clases. La experiencia fue súper nutritiva, ya deseo hacer otro para tener más experiencia y manejo y por supuesto, ir a una guardia a suturar! Nos seguimos leyendo :)

I must confess that it is not as easy as it seems, we know that everything is practice and it was my first time. Taking the forceps in the right way was sometimes difficult, because we tended to hold it like a normal scissors and it is not like that. Also, the suture when passing through the tissue does not pass so easily, you have to exert a prudent force. And the same with each type of stitches, each one had its detail. We learned how to make the simple stitches, the separate X-shaped stitches and we also learned the subdermal suture.
The course lasted 2 hours, and the time really flew by while we were learning, it was incredible, we even wanted to continue suturing but we had to finish the course and continue with the day's classes. The experience was super nourishing, I already want to do another one to have more experience and management and of course, go to a guard to suture! We will keep reading :)
