The Unusual Cinematic Journey of Pig

Pig, staring Nicholas Cage is one of the most unique movies I've seen in quite some time and I was impressed with the choice of camera angles and flow of the movie. This 2021 movie sees Nicholas Cage return to the greatness he possesses as an actor and allows me to forgive some of his recent horrible role selections. In this role, we see flashes of his greatness, like a fleeting vapor of what he once was and how powerful he can be under the right director and when selecting the right script.

On the surface, this drama explores the relationship between a renowned chef living in solitude and isolation in the forest and that of his only companion, a truffle pig. I can almost hear the eye rolls after people read that last statement, but I'm telling you, this is a powerful piece of cinema and you should definitely give it a shot. This movie is so much more than just a man and his pig. It explores the immense depth of love and loss, of being true to one's self and the impact that relationships, and the loss of them, can have on our existence.

The movie is overall solid with regards to technical aspects of film. There were a few shots and scenes that felt to "forced" and where the attempt at unique camera work detracted from the flow and pace of the film. There were also places where there were room for improvement with regards to the balance of ambient and background noise volume compared to the dialogue. There are times in cinema where a lowered voice can enhance a scene, but in some of the instances in Pig this was lost as muffled conversations being overpowered by the other ancillary noises.

If you haven't see this film yet, I would highly recommend it and that you do so going in with an open mind of what is possible with a seemingly strange premise for a movie and enjoy the rare glimpses of Nicholas Cage grasping moments of his former glory. If you have seen it, what are your perceptions of the film? Did I miss the mark on this one or am I spot on? Thanks, as always, for taking the time to read and support my posts. It is greatly appreciated!
