A day of flamingos.

The lake is now drying up in the summer heat. When the winter rains come, it will fill up again to welcome the flamingos for their breeding activities, next spring season.
103.jpg

The young flamingos have to wait in order to gather strength for the long flight north into the African continent and most of the adults are gone already.

After breeding here in the spring and summer seasons, the flamingos all leave before the winter starts and they fly to the hotter countries like Kenya and others up north in the African continent.
During spring and summer, they arrive in the hundreds to come and breed in South Africa. Shallow lakes and dams are their preferred breeding grounds, as the shallow water is filled with crustaceans and mollusks. Their beaks are perfectly designed to scoop and filter the food up and they use their tongues to let the water out. A flamingo can dance in the water to stir the mud up that will reveal the food.

Can you believe that during the Roman times, flamingo tongues were considered a great delicacy?

Some weeks ago this was all water and now only the evidence of the flamingo visits are left.

A Heron came flying over to find a spot.

136.JPG

This was what I was waiting for, as their flapping of the wings means that they were preparing to fly.
147.JPG

A dancing queue of flamingos that you can see below.
169.JPG

Yep! I was right, as there they were starting to take off.

Sadly the distance and the sun were not friendly to my zoom.
244.JPG

Finally, a closer look at the mountain.
297.JPG

The wonders of nature and the intricate designs of each of nature's wild residents are certainly most amazing. Every creature is perfectly designed to cope with the food that they eat. At times, I have watched how squirrels will crack the hardest of nut shells with their teeth, and at other times I have watched monkeys use stones to crack the nuts.
So, animals and birds such as the crows and the seagulls are all intelligent enough to keep themselves fed. Why anyone would see flamingo tongues as a delicacy is way beyond me. But the human animals are the ones that can create their own food, and instead they would rather kill the wonders of nature to find something nice to eat. So silly in my mind.
But that is just the way things are.

I hope that you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

And That's All Friends.

They are wonderful to watch out there and the lake is a bird haven.
The lake was not completely dried up, as the flamingos were at the opposite side where there are still long stretches of shallow water.
Thank you for the appreciation Jackie and hope that your day is also good.

Beautiful pictures as always!
I think I've seen them dancing somewhere on TV, might have been a program by David Attenborough, most likely it was.. lol

Thank you Anke ❤️
Now you know why they are dancing, as it is to stir the mud up, as then it releases the food !LOL

I think David might have told me that, but I guess I have forgotten that minor detail; I've got you now though to bring your area a little closer to home 😉
Thanks, Zac!

Wow! This was a wonderful sight to see!
These flamingos are not common in my country as I haven't seen one ..

I assume that their tongues were tiny, so it means a number of them were needed for a dish 😬

Thank you and I love to go there with my camera.
Nope, they live mainly on the African continent, although some might have been exported elsewhere.
Sad to think how many were killed only for their tongues.

I used to get excited seeing flamingo's watching discovery.. haven't seen in real life and not exist in south Asian I guess.

There's a relief when you know it will be fill up again soon.

You truly Captured Awesome Moment there!!!

I have explained elsewhere that flamingos live mainly on the African continent. So, no, I don't think that they will be seen in the wild in Asia.
We are in a winter rain area and our winter will start in another few weeks. Then the rain will again fill the lake.
Thank you and I am blad that you liked the post.

Oh yes and one day you will find that Africa is full of surprises.

Thank you and that lake gets filled every winter so that the birds can come and nest when the spring season arrives.

I am amazed how strong the flamingos were that they can fly a long distance to save themselves. They don't have permanent address as they transfer from one place to another.

Thanks for this, I learn something about flamingos.

Oh yes, from South Africa to Kenya is about a 3827 kilometers and other African countries where they land is even further. They don't like the winter here, which will start soon, so then they fly up to the hotter countries. But they return here every spring season to breed.
I think their IDs show dual citizenship !LOL

My pleasure and I am glad that you learned something new 😊

Lol, flamingos have two or more citizenship as they can travel to different countries without visa lol

Graceful dance in preparation of leaving, have not seen so many together in a long time, lucky you!

Wetlands, pans that fill with water such a lifesaver to so many birds that arrive for specific reason.

Lovely photography, bit of history in crazy people eating a specific part of a bird not all!

Thank you Lady Joan and I still rue the fact that I couldn't get closer to them. Way too far for me to walk.

Wonderful and we are glad that they keep the lake area in a pristine condition.

Crazy people indeed, but the modern people still do the same. I think here of the Rhinos that are killed only for their horns and the Pangolins that are facing extinction because of their scales.
Sheer madness!

Wetlands are being lost at an alarming rate, hopefully nature will step in to take back.

Not being able to get closer you still managed some amazing photography, have a great Saturday.

Thankfully over here they are very fussy about the wetlands, but as usual up north they couldn't care less.

Always a struggle, as the sun tries its utmost to protect the birds against photographers that stand at the far side of the lake !LOLZ

Wetlands are critical to environment health, at one time we had Pelicans floating on the Amanzimtoti river not that long ago either, Palm Vultures also started venturing down this way....

St Lucia estuary was in the worst shape I have ever seen last year, sadly many folk living on the waterway lose their livelihood due to negligence of those who should be tending to dredging, trying to get back to where it once was. Mangroves once destroyed very seldom revive like most plant life.

Sun glare across water always a problem when you on the wrong side with photography !LUV

Hallo Johann!
Beeindruckende Bilder. Dazu braucht man eine gute Kamera, da kommt man mit dem Telefon nicht weit.
Trotzdem habe ich ein (so denke ich) schönes Naturbild aufgenommen. Schau es Dir doch bitte mal an!

Yeah, the lake starts to dry up every late summer, but the winter rains will fill it up again to be ready for spring.
