Most dangerous snakes in South Africa.

But first I will show you a video of this Boa Constrictor at feeding time.
305.jpg

I will also show you 3 of the most poisonous snakes in our country.

Now I know that many don't like snakes, but it is always a good thing to know more about them. We fear snakes for good reason as some of them can kill us. In fact some can kill us almost instantly, but many are not poisonous. Nevertheless it pays to know which ones to avoid at all costs.

I made this video to show you the striking speed of a Boa Constrictor.
It was feeding time and the rat was already dead, but the snake didn't know that. Boa Constricter's crush the bones in their prey before swallowing it.

Here we have the famous Green Mamba. Second in lethality only to the Black Mamba.

A handsome fella with a secret weapon.

The eastern green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) is a highly venomous snake species of the mamba genus Dendroaspis native to the coastal regions of southern East Africa. Described by Scottish surgeon and zoologist Andrew Smith in 1849, it has a slender build with bright green upperparts and yellow-green underparts. The adult female averages around 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) in length, and the male is slightly smaller.

Check out it's poison.
Its venom consists of both neurotoxins and cardiotoxins. Symptoms of envenomation include swelling of the bite site, dizziness and nausea, accompanied by difficulty breathing and swallowing, irregular heartbeat and convulsions progressing to respiratory paralysis. Bites that produce severe poisoning can quickly be fatal.
Sourc

He yawned here to show his secret weapon, as this snake can open his mouth at 170 degrees and he has long fangs that fold out at the back of his mouth when he strikes.

Now this is the most dangerous snake in Africa.
The Black Mamba.

A shy snake that looked warily at me and this was the only shot of him that I could get.
But I will go back the to get clear shots of him.

Black mamba, ( Dendroaspis polylepis ), species of mamba snake known for its large size, quickness, and extremely potent venom. It lives in sub-Saharan Africa and is one of the continent’s most dangerous snakes. Black mamba ( Dendroaspis polylepis ).

You can see more of him here, Source

Finally I have two photos here of a female Boomslang.
We encountered them frequently in the citrus orchards when I was a child up north in the country.
320.jpg

The venom of the boomslang is primarily a hemotoxin; it disables the coagulation process and the victim may die as a result of internal and external bleeding. The venom has been observed to cause hemorrhaging into tissues such as muscle and the brain.

So yes, one can only stare in wonder at these killers and best is to run far away when you spot one of them. There are also two other snake species that are included in the 5 most dangerous snake species namely, The Cape Cobra and the infamous Puff Adder, as it is the puff adder that bites the people the most. I will show them in another post.

I love the picture of the green mamba with his mouth open :) If you look at it a certain way, he is swallowing that piece of wood in the background

Thank you and yes it looks like it, but I would have loved to see his fangs.
So I will go back there at feeding time to see if I can get his strike.

You might want to set up a video camera too. That should guarantee at least one good picture if not more ?

Of course it's fascinating and the snake needs fresh food, just as we eat our steak half rare, but I can't see the eyes of the cow 😉
Nevertheless, snakes are beautiful creatures. Very nice post as always Zac 😃

Good evening Hannes,

Hahaha, I told the feeder to male sure that the rat was dead as some Austrian mountain goat wouldn't like my post if the rat was alive 🤣🤣🤣

Cheers and thanks.
