Mystery and Silhouettes!

Here he is! The mystery Buzzard Raptor and I only got one picture of him!

I have this mystery raptor bird and some silhouettes to show you today!

A mystery bird? Yes indeed as I have never seen one of these Buzzards before. No, it is not a Steppe Buzzard and not a Forest Buzzard. But don't take my word for it, as I will explain what it is thought to be at the end of the post.

In the meantime enjoy the silhouettes!

381.JPG

No, he is not a bird, but nevertheless a great silhouette 🙂

615.JPG

A lovely early evening picture here!

Trying to find his balance in life 🤣

This little family was also making their way home from their workplaces.

Finally, just a lovely sunset here to complete the post!

Now about that mystery bird:

The ‘Mystery Buzzard’ Dilemma!

The Cape ‘Mystery’ Buzzard, also just called the ‘Cape Buzzard’ is an unconfirmed species of Buzzard which has been the center of quite a bit of controversy in recent years. It’s a resident Buzzard which looks in many cases identical to the Steppe Buzzard. Theories have been put forth over where the Buzzards come from and whether they are hybridized birds or not".

"At this point, despite research having been done on them, there is not yet a consensus on the answer. Are these just Steppe Buzzards who have over-wintered and become residents or are they something else? Hopefully time will tell, but all that’s for certain at this stage is that they’re a bugger to identify".

Mystery Buzzard has amazing eyes, all the better to catch squirrels, maybe this possible Steppe Buzzard prefers the Cape with it's majestic mountains and plenty to do in the region.

Lovely silhouette photography, wishing you a wonderful day and new week @papilloncharity

Thank you and yes I was also mesmerized with those eyes Lady Joan.
Just the thing here is that it's definitely not Steppe Buzzard, as some parts of him looks like a Forest Buzzard.

Another give away is that these ones nest in high rock cliffs like eagles.
So they have given them the temporary name of "Cape Buzzards"

Luckily they have taken samples from some of their babies and we look forward to the results.

Blessings and thank you kindly for the curation!

Sometimes we see the big birds surprised with their arrival in suburban areas, one I do enjoy was close to where we grew up.

Verreaux's eagles watched over by Black Eagle Project Roodekrans, Roodepoort is one I check on every so often learning more about the big birds around us.

Perhaps hunting has brought this one down for a breather before taking off into high altitude once again. Will be interesting to learn more as you hear results coming out.

My father in law lives near the Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort Lady Joan.
They know the eagles very well, as he was a council geologist and drilled rock samples there.

The surprising thing is that the mystery Buzzards nest here and their offspring stays here.
Great news is that I got him on film again today at a different place and I will post it soon!

Blessings and thank you!

They have done the ID Lady Joan and they reckon that it's a juvenile Gymnogene (African Harrier Hawk).
I have posted the adults at times, but it's my first to see a youngster and now I have a full set of them.

Ah! You know exactly what I like and even if I had listened to my original idea of placing the Buzzard photo last in the post with the source description, I love that bird too much not to place him first lol.

I cannot tell you how happy was to see him and I think that mother nature designed it so that I can only get one shot of him. A tease methinks, as if he is scouting the area, then I am almost sure that I will see him again.

If the bird scientists are correct in their thoughts that it is a cross breed here between the Steppe and Forest Buzzards, then we have another exclusive African breed of Buzzards, bred by nature to cope with the local weather and food conditions.

We did the same with cattle in history as some breeds were crossed to breed the exclusive Afrikander red oxen with a mighty strength to pull the heavy old ox wagons, but that crossing was done by man and in the Buzzard's case it was done by nature.
We know that there are also migratory birds from Europe and elsewhere, that have cross bred with local birds to form a new species.

Cheers and thanks!

We always fear accepting compliments in life, for one thing is that there might be motives behind it and for the other thing that it might not be genuine.
Then of course we also fear that it will boost our ego and we might become what we are not hahahah.

Well, it's a stronger motor that the 750 and my bike was only a 650cc Yamaha. But I think that it was much lighter than the Harleys.

Well, you have one thing right about motors Hannes,
The weight ratio is very important as far as power output and speeds are concerned.
If you have a look at the track racing bikes, you will see that everything above the light steel frame is fibreglass. Lightweight materials so as to get the maximum out of the motors.

My Yamaha was a Police motorcycle and I think the twin stroke pushed out about 70-80hp. So it was light and fast, but more suited to city streets an highways.

Cheers and thanks!

Yepp, and a Harley is made of steel and steel 😉 but I like my bike and if it was faster I would ride faster, what would be more dangerous. So, it's good as it is 😁

Your bike is iron and it is perfect to do what you are doing with it Hannes.
No reason for you to have to ride faster and besides, a van is also not much faster, if it is not slower, so it will also be perfect.

I needed speed because I travelled to work and back on a straight and tarred highway and had to dodge some dicey drivers that change lanes without their indicators showing that they wanted to change.

A hearty good night to you guys and may you have a good rest.

Good morning again, Zac 😊

yes, my bike is not made for speeding, it's a Cruiser, but sometimes I am riding like These young guys on their sport bikes, just a bit slower 😉

My way to works is only 10 km long and leads through the town and partly along the lake - no need for speed 😁

Another good morning also to you Hannes,

Great to be alive and sparkling today. Our little dog Troy doesn't think so, as we were battling to get him out from under my chair here. It's his bath day and he is a cheeky little bugger hahaha.

I think it's a real man thing to on occasion "speed up" a little bit lol. Just makes our blood flow a bit faster and energize us a bit hahaha. 200kph on a bike on a very long open stretch feels like a rocket, but even in a helmet with a closed visor, the wind blows the spit right around one's head lol.

You are right and 10ks are ideal for a cruise, especially if you know the roads like you hand and you know what to watch out for.

Cheers and thanks!

Haha, a dog that doesn't like to take a bath 🤣 All the dogs I know love it, but I don't know many 😉

When he was a small puppy he ran towards me Hannes.

But the problem was that I was in a canoe coming in on the water from a ride in the river. This little guy kept on running and when he jumped, he hit the water like a stone lol.
I had to dive out of the canoe to go down and get him. Since then he became allergic to water hahaha.
He is now an old man, but he still remembers that incident lol.

Harleys are more comfortable touring bikes, supposed to be, but many guys want a second youth so they buy them just to show off.
You use yours as a working bike and nothing wrong with that.
I can only imagine about that sometimes going faster and I think I know why hahahah.

Cheers and thanks!

Good evening Zac,

I think I have been there once with my parents when I was a kid, but I am not sure. Anyway, it has changed a lot.

When I go there next time I will know where to go. There are a few waterfalls and lakes ... and many people all around.

That's only a smartphone photo again. I haven't had a look at the other photos yet and they will have to wait a few days, because tomorrow I am going on a hike with colleagues in the afternoon and when I come back late in the evening I don't think I will turn the computer on.
So, please don't worry if I don't reply before Tuesday 😉

Good evening Hannes,

Good that you went there and scouted around a bit for some good spots.
Now if you can get there before, or after the people some unexpected surprises might also appear.
Animals stay away from many people, but when all is quiet and still, they appear from out of nowhere.
I would love to sit a couple of days at that dam my friend.

Not to worry about the replies and I hope that you will enjoy the hike.
Besides you can always play catch up and on Tuesday you can send me a lot of "bleeding" fingers replies again hahaha,

Cheers and thanks!

Oh, I have been there this morning before the people and when I was on my way back down to the valley they were driving upwards - many, many cars. I was so glad, because I had the dam wall for me alone 😁

Next time I will go for a little hike to waterfalls there.

The road is only open from 7 in the morning, so sunrise shots are not possible, and from November 1 it is completely closed during Winter, so I might not be able to get there again this year, but I'll try.

Yeah I figured that you would do that and great that you had the place to yourself for a while.
Those waterfalls sounds very interesting.

Now here's my question; That place might be iced or even snowed up during winter and the weak winter sun might play lovely colors on it on the odd occasions that it shines through.

Surely you as a member of the police ministry and a photographer can get a permit to go in there?
If you can then I can seethe most wonderful sunrises and even sunsets there!

Guaranteed if I lived there I would make a bid noise to get a permit, even up to prime minister level.

Cheers and thanks!

No way my friend, a closed road means a closed road, but you can walk up there at any time at your own risk 😉
In winter the snow will be meters high and avalanches happen every day, so nobody would risk to allow somebody in a family van to drive that road 🙄
Actually I was thinking of hiking to one of the first waterfalls which are not too far up the mountain ;)

Hi Zac,
now I have time for my replies ;)
We have had a nice hike yesterday with quite some rain in the beginning and a very cloudy sunset which was not great, but I haven't seen the photos yet.

I always take safe routes at first, but then I see something better somewhere else and have to look what it is ... and sometimes I go too far into unknown terrain that I have to search a safe way back 😂 lol

Hi Hannes,

Good, as yesterday I had a bit of a lean time with the replies, as I thought that I would get much less than normal. But thankfully it was not too bad.

Cloudy sunsets are the best in my opinion, as one can only take so much of clear sky sunsets. The clouds always bring in artist opportunities.

So, you got a bit wet at the start of the hike but it sounds like it ended well my friend.

That is exactly also my own problem, as getting back from an interesting foray is always a problem. I had just this a few days ago when I climbed up a high mound.
The grass covering it was wet and in the coming down part I slid in some parts on my bum lol. Imagine walking around with a wet bum and I felt like a baby again hahaha.

Cheers and thanks!

No, this sunset wasn't good because the Clouds were Deep over the horizon and covered the sun. There have been only a few gaps which showed a bit of an orange color tone for a few minutes before the whole horizon and sky was gray.

Haha, I can imagine how you felt 🤣

My worst "hike" was last year when I thought to know a better and more interesting way to a mountain lake in Slovenia, because on "my" way there was a waterfall too. The waterfall was cool, but after an hour climbing straight upwards a slope I stood before a vertical rock face and had to search for a path down to the start. In the end I took the regular path and my hike ook 6 hours instead of 3 😂lol
But I have seen a beautiful old grown mossy forest which I will visit again one day 😃

Yes, it can certainly be frustrating when the clouds don't play the game lol.
You see a great shot, get your camera setting right and then when you look up another cloud has covered it!

That's a great problem and they call it moving about on unfamiliar territory. I have also made may of those mistakes where a "short cut" ends into a "long cut" hahaha.
That mossy forest sounds like a place to be lol.

Cheers and thanks!

Oh no, there was no frustration, because it was quite clear that there might be no sunset, since the clouds have all been very low all day long, and in the evening they just grew more and higher.

It was fun anyway and I have found this forest, so although I got a bit lost it was a bit of success 😊

Maybe when you go there again you must try to lay on it, but then again maybe not, as one never knows if there's spiders or some other little monsters in it lol.

Well, there's always a first time for everything and you can even put a small pillow in your backpack to lay comfortably. Trouble is that you might fall into a deep sleep and wake up at 12 that night to see Cinderella or her uncle with his axe hahaha.

Yeah, we had much fun with red ants in the army , the ones that bite lol.

Now there you go and an inflatable pillow is even better.
I think your best bet would be for Cinderella to take the photos, as if her uncle gets hold of you, then you won't have to worry about photos ever again lol.

Oh man, you will really know about it when one of those red little buggers bite you. Feels like sharp little stings that will make you jump around trying to slap yourself on the back if the ant is dropped down in your shirt at the back hahaha.

A bigger pillow for me and for Cinderella, of course. There are no back problems when she's nearby 🤗

My father in law was a beekeeper and he hasn't been ill one single day in the over 25 years I have known him. I don't know how it is with other insects, but bee stings are healthy in my eyes, if you're not allergic, of course 😉

Hahaha, I thought that you would come up with something like this 🤣
Now may I discreetly ask about what you would do with Cinderella in your dreams?

Well they say that after a number of bees have stung one, that the person becomes immune to the bee sting poison. I don't know how true this is, as 3 has stung me thus far and every time I ended up in hospital with a drip in my arm.
Maybe your father in law knows something that we don't?

Well, I always forget my dreams when I wake up, so I couldn't tell you that I really have done with her what I wanted to do. So I believe it's better that you don't know 😂

You must be allergic. To me a bee sting is not much more than the sting of a mosquite. Well, of a large mosquito of course 😉 I was stung by quite a lot of bees in my life, as well as by wasps and also by a hornet which I wanted to help, but she didn't think so ;)

Hahaha, I also think that it's better that I don't know, as maybe it could influence me to start to have the same dreams hahaha.

Yes, I am allergic and we have special allergy pills in case of an emergency. The stings of the wasps are something else and apart from that lovely burning sensation at their sting, I am thankfully not allergic to them.
One stung me five times on my chest and the swelling made me look like Samson hahaha.
I think that hornet was allergic to Austrian mountain goats lol.

So, you don't have lions and your most dangerous animals are bees and hornets?
No warthogs, baboons or leopards?

Cheers and thanks!

We have wild boars and a few bears around. Also wolfes can be seen sometimes, but I think these are the biggest wild animals around apart from deer.

Well, I understand that you don't think that bees are healthy if you're allergic. That means you have to be very careful when you walk barefoot on a meadow.

Ah! Okay, so you might step on a sleeping bear's tail, as I think it would be similar to meeting and angry lion waiting for an explanation why you stepped on his tail 🤣

No, bees are indeed healthy and we love to eat natural honey my friend. In fact Marian bought 1 kilogram of fresh natural honey this morning before the rain came down.
I never walk barefoot as my left leg is a bit shorter after the bike accident.

Cheers and thanks!

I think a bear would be more dangerous than a lion, which I could calm down with some delicious kitten treats.

Agreed, but beware when you walk around in the darkness of early dawn lol. Both of us will be seriously worried if you run into anything.

I like hot scones with the steam still rising from a fresh bake with butter and honey. But bread is also great!

Good day Zac, I hope you have a nice day. We have had the first snow this year and it fell almost down to the valleys.

We don't have scones here, maybe similar, but I love it on thick slices of fresh black bread 😋

Greetings to you Hannes,

Finally you crawled out of the woodwork and you must have seen the discussions between JJ and me this whole morning? Only a joke as I bet you were out again somewhere, or working lol.

Good and I know that you are a careful guy!

Great to hear that you had your first snowfall and also glad that we are right now having a bit of a break in the rain. I did a rain post today and don't know if the people will like a post about rain, as many are allergic to rain lol.

Black bread? What on earth is black bread? Rye?

Cheers and thanks!

You are right, I have been "somewhere", mostly just driving around searching motivation ;)

Yes, we call it "Schwarzbrot" what means black bread in English - it's dark bread made of Rye and most kinds are delicious.

Aha and I hope that you found her Hannes.
Motivation is shy and many times she hides from us, but just when we think that she is gone, then she surprises us with a wonderful gift of inspiration lol.

Yes, I saw that as I asked Mrs. Google and the Russkies also have a form of black bread, but it's different that your German one.
I have never tasted it, but if you say that it is nice then I know that it is!

This bread is healthier than the fluffy "white" bread you can buy too. And our bread is Austrian bread - it's different from German bread 😉

Hahaha, of course the mountain goat will eat different black bread than any other country.
That fluffy white bread is indeed unhealthy and we eat what they call "Future Life" brown bread as it is loaded with natural vitamins.
But Austrian bread also sounds good!

Hahaha, maybe the lady motivation found out about about your feelings for Cinderella and she has decided to hide away from you in case you start getting the same thoughts about her 🤣

It seems that you are creating an inexplicable love situation there and the way that I know women they will gang up on you sooner or later.
I wouldn't want my friend to end up in that situation, so heed my sage advice here.

I was searching for the lady motivation this morning, but again she didn't show up. So I just took some photos that my camera has something to do 😁 lol

Yeah, I saw that and all is well my friend.

Just a bit of a surprise this morning, as we had nil per mouth last night in order to have our blood sugar and cholesterol tests this morning.
We were worried about mine, but the surprise is that mine turned out perfect and Marian is in trouble as her counts are very high. She is normally the fit one and as we are seeing an eye specialist today at 3pm to check her left eye, the high counts might be the reason for her drop of vision in the eye.

Such is life, full of surprises lol.

Ohh yeah life likes keeping us on our toes for sure, Lets hope Marian can balance out her levels and her vision improves

0

You can certainly say that again.

Fortunately no underlying causes were found for Marian's eye deterioration, as the doctor reckons that her brain will learn how to use her new glasses and she has to visit the doctor every year so he can keep an eye on things!

Now the target is to lower her cholesterol count, but we will get there lol.

Is this one of the church's outreach projects JJ?
We are also doing one, as I have been allocated to preach at an old age home, but the Covid has stopped it.
On Sunday we will enter level 1 of the prolonged lockdown, so it might start again, but I have to wait for the okay.

Blessings!

Yes indeed back home now, actually been home for a bit but was tired and had a rest for an hour or so, then was watching the end of the days Tour De France now catching up on here

The Church we go to is St Marys in Dartmouth a lovely small semi modern building and church, the Food Pantry is by St Anthony of Padua, a church over 100 years old I would say and beautiful inside, i will take my camera next week and get some shots of both he food pantry setup but also the church

Ye sit best to wait, Lulu would love to go to Church on Sundays here but they are busier than weekdays and I would prefer we join virtually rather than going there with many people

Good luck with things opening up for you to preach

0

Oh, I love those little old churches JJ.
They have such great characters and every time when I enter one, I can hear the clouds of witnesses whispering "Hallelujah"!
I bet that you can get some great shots of the insides.

Not a good idea to sit in crowds with this Covid thing not having played itself out yet.
Virtual is a better option in my view.

Thanks, we will have to see how it goes.

0

I to love old churches, St Anthonys is having work done at the moment and has scaffolding on the spire, so outside its not so good for photos but I will get shots when it is finished, but It has the kind of feel of the style of St Patricks cathedral in NYC which I will show sometime when I get shots :)

Funny you mention Hallelujah, that's the song i played as we were driving away from the church yesterday

I saw on the news here this morning a couple of local colleges have had spikes of CoVID and have gone back to online classes, sadly i expect to see lots of that

0

Many of the old churches have similarities JJ, as the churches employed one popular chief designer in the old days and all of the smaller churches had to follow variants of the main design.
We had a guy here called Herbert Baker and many of the towns here have similar styled Herbert Baker church buildings.

Glad that you also like the Hallelujah song and what a coincidence lol.

That's why guys like us are high risk and best that we stay away from groups of people.
A friend is a senior minister at a church that is closed now under the Covid lockdown rules.
So they decided to also take his mother in law out of the old age home, as some people in another part of the home died of Covid.

They took their mother home not realizing that she was also Covid positive and my friend and his wife also got the Covid.
But thankfully all three of them have pulled through and they are now okay.

We might not be so lucky, so best not to take any chances my friend.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yes Thats true churches of various faith had architects or designers that they favored and you can see similar designs all around

Thats great that your friends all pulled through, indeed we have to be sensible and careful without getting paranoid, finding the right balance is the key

0
0
0.000
avatar

I cannot argue with our reasoning and in my mind the correct balance is keep ourselves apart and to only take isolated walks when we can.
Although we have now been downgraded to level 1 of the lockdown, Covid is still around and there are murmurs that a backlash might start to appear!

0
0
0.000
avatar

Thats what I am trying to do as well, I go to the supermarket in the seniors hour early morning when it is very quiet, and avoid people to the max as much as we can

Backlashes are appearing in various countries around the world sadly

0

You certainly have a great system and our hands are suffering from all of the sanitizer spraying lol.
So your idea of virtual church id the best.

They are saying here that covid will still be around for at least another 3 years.

0

Ohh yeah we are churning through the hand sanitizers and will keep doing so

Many of the churches here are doing online streaming

And yes I have read the same reports on how long we will be dealing with it

0

The best that we can do to avoid contamination and thus far both you guys and us have been lucky to avoid it.
So, it's one long journey of masks, sanitizers and isolation, but I know that can all do it.

0

Yeah we have to do what we can do I think we’re gonna be stuck with masks sanitizers and like for a long while in fact in at some parts of Asia they’ve been doing that for years stay safe and healthy my friend

0

avatar

Definitely not my idea of fun JJ.
That mask is so irritating that I am taking my beard off today, as it continues to tangle in the thing lol.
But, such is life and we simply do what we have to do my friend.

You guys also keep safe.

0

0

Hahaha, I also still have mine and maybe it will go tomorrow lol.
The tough times are when the mask pushes the hairs into my nose, as then I walk around sneezing like a headless chicken hahaha.

Fir me it’s I get sweaty under the mask and my beard gets wet and drippy lol

0

Same here and then when they stick that temp scanner on me head with mask on, they say that me temperature is high. Of course it will be high sweating inside that facecloth lol.

0

avatar

So far I have been lucky with my temp not reading high, mind you its because i have generally driven to the place and don't wear the mask in the car so only had it on at that stage for the short walk into the place, if they check me on the way out it probably would be high

0
0

Yeah, that's what I must also do, putting the mask on at the last minute.
Thank you for the tip JJ.

Cheers!

I just came up from painting the floor int he new room in the basement, was down there working for maybe a couple of hours with a mask on because of the dust when sweeping and fumes from paint, the mask was soaking wet when I was done, but that's all the work for today, rest of the day apart from a visit to a Thorassic Surgeon ( now don't panic, I have some spot son my lungs 3 of them, and of course with a new Primary Doctor he wants then checked out and hence this visit, I have had these spots since i had TB and I will explain that to the Dr, and hopefully he will or she will be happy with me to have another scan in 3 or 6 month and confirm there not changing as I have done in the past so I am not worried)

and then will chill and try and catch up on here and edit photos which I haven't done for a coupe of day s

Cheers and !BEER

Yeah I remember about the TB and great that you were wearing a mask.
Did you pick up the the TB in Africa?

If you are not worried then we will not panic and let's hope that it's good news after you have seen the doctor.
What I know about the doctors here is that they don't like it when a person with a chronic condition tell them about previous tests and treatments and they prefer to see fresh scans that they have ordered lol.

Good that you are chilling a bit and getting some photos done.
I mentioned #wednesdaywalk in my post today, but posted it in #featheredfriends, as it is about birds.

Did you hear anything from OCD yet?

Cheers and thanks!

0

No I haven’t heard from OCD but what will be, will be

Went well at the Dr with my history she wasn’t to concerned about the small spots they will try and get my previous scans from CT and if no change then will do another scan in a year if they can’t get them them will do another scam in 6 months do it’s all good

0
0
0.000
avatar

Well all that we have is hope as far as OCD is concerned. I have also asked Johann to nominate wednesdaywalk.

So relieved and to tell you the truth, I forgot that they can do inter scan transfers, Marian's dentist also used her transfers. So let's hope for the year scenario.

0

Ouch, the one thing that you mentioned here I seriously dislike. Colonoscopy.

I have to admit i have nbeen slack I have bene told to get one since turning 50, now that I don't have work to blame for now being able to take a day off I decided I may as well get it done not looking forward to it, well not worried about the procedure, just not looking forward to the drinks nd flushing out the system

Yes I am lucky I have good insurance and good medical services here

0

Oh yeah, don't tell me about those drinks, or flushing out the system.
Marian will tell you that when I awake afterwards then I want to fight lol.

You and I share many experiences JJ.
I was booked for a double, top and bottom swallowing cameras.
So I awoke in the usual belligerent mood and the nurse later on brought me a tray of hospital food, as I was booked to stay in for 2 days. The doctor wanted to see the results of the tests in case of an emergency operation required before they released me. I refused to eat the food before Marian ate half and that night I signed myself out of hospital.
Luckily no operation was required lol.

Mark and Lulu certainly had a good laugh there lol.

Well in that case we are twins from different mothers 🤣

Not that we cannot "lose it" occasionally, but those instances are rare and usually much more intensive than normal anger.
I call them bad news incidents usually for the aggressors, but fortunately I have not had one this year yet!

0

avatar

Ohh yes
I will admit I have a nasty temper when I was younger in my teens or twenties I did not control it and could loose my temper so badly but then I learned that was no good for me or those around me so I developed both control of it and ways to calmly vent and can honestly say it’s well over 25 years since I lost my temper

0

Exactly, my own temper had me arrested a few times, but luckily the result was always fines and never imprisonment. You have a much tighter control on yours than I do, as even last year I lost it when a loudmouth was slapping and jerking some women around.
But such is life!

0

That could cause me to loose mine as well the last time mine was set off was when three guys tried to mug me I was happy to give them my money but one tried to hit me in the face bad move I put all three of them into hospital

Now I know that I shouldn't say this, but good for you mate.
