Not often that this happens.

We were on our way to the beach and on a bridge crossing a railway line I heard a loud train hooter far off approaching and I saw the smoke.
041.jpg

So quick actions were called for, like stopping the car and hopping onto the bridge.

There was a fierce wind blowing and my wife lost her beloved cap in the rush to go and stand on the bridge. Some person, or animal below the bridge will soon be running around with a revolution style cap that they found as a Christmas present:)
In any case, before the train sound came to my ears, there was a beautiful cloud hanging above the mountain that ends in the sea and that was my target to go and get on my camera, before the train sound interfered.

Note that @papilloncharity will soon post a copy of its annual report on Hive, about its work in the communities for 2022. Papillon has submitted an annual report to the government at every yearend for the past 21 years.

Here below you can see the cloud on the sea that I am talking about.

Oh yes, there she came and I love the old Locomotives that simply refuse to die.
We had regular trips on the old steam trains as soldiers in the army, and it took 3 days to get from the Cape to Johannesburg city.

I have posted steam trains before, but never with photos from this bridge.

Slowly and stately the old madam came closer and closer.

And here the train stopped waiting for a "Go" signal change.
Several residential estates were built near the train line and the residents have to drive over the rail crossings to get to their homes.
So the train has to wait for a few minutes as the red-light warning signals about an approaching train, are switched on at the crossings.
This will clear the line and then the train will get the green "Go" signal.

Finally, here is the evidence to show you the wild wind that we had.
009.JPG

So, I joke with my wife, as I praise her for donating her cap as a Christmas gift to someone out there :) We believe in the practice of giving and the wind helped her to donate the cap. Just a Sunday laugh!

If you ever come to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, then don't forget to book a day trip on this train. Single, partner or family with kids, all are welcome. This not just an ordinary train trip to only see the amazing sights, as it also stops at a popular food restaurant in the Elgin valley for lunch, before the return trip to the City of Cape Town.

Oh I forget to tell you that the train crosses over a mountain on one of the steepest railway lines in the country.

Have a look at this secure link and you will also see the food market:

I hope that you have enjoyed the story and the pictures.

Days of steam really missed by many who remember the days spent enjoying journeys to far off places, hopefully these will be kept going a wonderful reminder to all how much this invention altered our lives and thinking.

You will be sure to buy Marian a new cap for Christmas now you know exactly what she enjoys in the head gear department, can't go wrong!

The sad thing is that it's all the old guys that keep the steam trains running and for how much longer we do not know. I only hope that they are roping some youngsters in to teach them the tricks of the trade.

I bought the cap for her at a shop in Fish Hoek, and we will go there again to get her another one.

I hope youth are learning who knows we may have to go back to steam. (I have noticed some countries where youth volunteer to learn, no idea about over here...)

Good excuse to go that way for a Sunday drive once again, lovely little place if not too busy with holiday makers.

Something worth looking into, as I also hope that some youths are being trained here to take over the train maintenance.

Not right now, as would be too busy with the crowds.

Absolutely flabbergasted at the way trains have been dismantled for scrap in this country, De Aar had a graveyard with steam engines, now we won't talk about the copper cable overhead lines, rails nor anything else. At the end of the day I do hope someone is training up to keep a couple going into the future.

Villages here just as busy when here I thought they would be put off....

!LOLZ hat'less for now Marian will have to borrow one of yours.

And today we read that the special copper pipes at a hospital theater was stolen overnight. 400 street lights also disappeared. I can't understand how they cannot stop the tonnages of "scrap" metal from being exported.

Oh? I also thought that there would be a drastic drop in the visitors count, especially with the traveling expenses and the closed open beaches.

!LOLZ you are a mind reader as she has done just that.

About time any form of theft to private/government property be treated as treason, shoot on sight, follow money trail to catch the mafia at the top running the show!

Beaches are busy, children go missing, sea doing strange event waves washing people out...., who goes to the beach at this time of year? Not I!

!LUV have a great day, good to have a hat when outdoors.

Crush the snake's head and all of the rest will fall apart. Sadly this snake has many heads that are all very well connected.

Saw that even the whales are washed out now, (of course not because of the contaminated water) and two whales that washed up on the beach were shot and killed as a measure to stop their suffering.

Mad things happening all over and I only wonder how many will turn out with sudden illnesses.
Even if the water was good, no place to go to during the holiday seasons.

Yep, especially if one has an Irish skin.

And to think we used to throw things down the funnel from a bridge when we were kids. The SAB train used to move stuff up and down by the brewery in Newlands and that was only 40 odd years ago which is a long time ago when you think about it, but feels like yesterday.

Naughty boy you were, but glad that I could bring some memories back to you :)
They say that age is but a number and if you can remember some nefarious deeds done 40 years then your mind is still sound.
Amazing how the memories can return in an instant.

My mind is very sound as I am still a spring chicken. I can recall things as far back as when I was 5'ish. The good memories we all have. We were naughty back then as this was the pedestrian bridge by Newlands Rugby stadium.

Amazing, as most of my young days are starting to fade, but I do still remember some and they are all good ones. Our house in Mayfair, Johannesburg was one block away from the train lines and we also had many adventures on those lines. I was around 12-13 years old when we arrived in the big city and it was a totally different world if one compares it to a farm.
