Such a big and lovely surprise.

We heard that a part of the old jetty was caving in.
143.jpg

So we went to look as this very old jetty was left intact as a history heirloom. Then something else happened.

Not often that you will see this and I don't mean the jetty, but something else.

We recently had an incident further down towards the Cape coast where a leopard seal attacked a fisherman, for reasons unknown and luckily the fisherman survived.
I don't want to give the game away here so come and look.

Oh yes, the storm waves are finally winning the battle to destroy the jetty that was built in the early 1900s.
144.jpg

Now here was the big surprise.

Look here what was coming in ???
242.jpg

Bang! A sea lion and the first one that we have seen in our 3 years here.
He came right up to the concrete boat launching ramp.
146.jpg

What a lovely sight and one cannot blame the birds for being a bit nervous.
147.jpg

In fact this Kelp Gull decided to get out of here with that guy around.
215.jpg

You can see the sea lion's dark outline in the water and the birds were not taking any chances.
239.jpg

Look how the sea lion was watching that gull coming over him.
155.jpg

Again you can see the sea lion's dark outline behind the birds here,
212.jpg

Ever so slowly I walked down the ramp closer to him.
233.jpg

Was that a look of disdain? So as to say, "Dont dare trying anything buster"!
203.jpg

Ever so royally he started to make his way back to the open sea and I waved a farewell to him.
195.jpg

Finally here is a video of a Sea Lion in the Houtbay harbor that I found on YouTube.

Like I said, it was our first time to see a sea lion at our beach here, (we have seen some at other places that I posted before) and it was indeed a great experience. Someone told the sea lion that the fishermen have a room near the ramp where their catches are cleaned and the waste is cast out in the sea for the birds. But it was not his lucky day as all of the fishing boats were still out at sea.
Will I get him again on another occasion when maybe the feeding gets done?
I certainly hope so as it will be interesting to watch a sea lion battling to keep the birds away from his feast.
Such is life over here.

And That's All Friends!

Sea Lion sighting on the beach a lovely surprise, only ever seen them in harbours.

Yes, same here and it was a lovely surprise to see this one popping up out of nowhere.
He was nowhere to be seen today, but it is weekend and too many people on the beach so we just drove past to look.

Thank you for the kind tipu.

A whale gave birth off Warner Beach, couple of days later a seal appeared, weather patterns changing I think have confused the sea life a bit.

Yes and even the birds are confused as last year this time Harry and Sally were gone, but now they stayed and Sally is on the nest again?

Honking success story in your neighbourhood, we see them walking up the road lately, one goose making itself known everywhere of late.

I think that we saw Sally at the hospital today, as it is close to us and she flies in that direction every night after supper here. And the kids are juveniles already, so I took some shots of them.
Haven't downloaded the camera yet to make sure that it is Sally.

Friends waiting to greet you, what fun! Most probably find someone in the hospital grounds is also feeding them, nothing beats a good backup system when raising young.

Like I said, it was our first time to see a sea lion at our beach here, (we have seen some at other places that I posted before) and it was indeed a great experience.

And I am reading this from a country (Hungary), where you cannot even see the sea itself, because there is no sea in/around this country. Seeing the sea would be a great experience for a person like me. And seeing a sea leon would be even greater.

Greetings from Hungary.

I give you some !PIZZA and !LUV.
Have a nice weekend. All the best.

Thank you and I grew up in the far north of the country where there is also no sea.
We only occasionaly visited the sea because of the far distance, but I have always wanted to live near the sea. Now we live a few minutes away from the sea and it is lovely here as we also have the mountains close to us.

Maybe some day you will also be at the the sea my friend as we never know what the future holds.

Thank you and I give you !BEER and !PIZZA

I hope that your weekend is also good.

That's a love surprise indeed, Zac, I can't remember that I have ever seen a Sea Lion in nature nor in a zoo.

I can't estimate the size of that guy, but could it be that the Sea Lion tried to take a nap on the jetty ... ?😉

There are many of them along our coasts Hannes, but the first one that we saw here, as they mostly appear in the harbors and we don't have a harbor here at our beach.

Are you talking about the video? Like our squirrels here, the sea lions also know where to get food and did you see how high that sea lion can jump out of the water. They are big guys my friend.

Soon we will go to the City, but not into the city as it is also surrounded with beaches and I will show you some very big Cape Fur Seals sleeping on the jetties.

Cheers and thanks

Yes, I have seen many videos where they are in harbours having a nap on the pier or looking for food.
I meant the Sea Lion you saw and thought he might have jumped on the jetty and his weight could have destroyed it 😉

Here we don't have such big animals coming that close and it's always a pleasure to see Sea Lions or Seals 😃

Not bad for a guy that types with one finger as I think there's only one comment left.
So soon you can rush off to bed 🤣

Glad that you saw them in vids, but live close up is always better.
Nah, that jetty has held thousand of sea animals, but if you look at the photo, you will see that the waves has also made a hole in another one of the leg posts.
Once the legs are gone the top will simply collapse.

So some day when you visit here you can feed an ice cream to a sea lion and I will take the photos so that can go back and brag to your friends 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Yeah, I think I don't even need to switch the TV on tonight to fall asleep 😴
Oh yes, I would love to share an ice cream with a sea lion - that would be so cool 😃

I think tonight I'll watch a few YouTube videos about photography or I watch wildlife videos with our red cat Pete - he loves such videos 😀

When we had a TV I loved to watch National Geographic and we also have some other South African wildlife channels . Saw a Hippo lifting a lion in it's mouth and flipping the lion through the air.

So maybe a thousand years ago Pete's great, great, great, great........grandparents were Siberian long tooth tigers 🤣🤣🤣

Cheers and thanks.

You should be careful having the children Petros and Onyx watching adult movies as just now they will think that they are lions and you will have to buy new socks every week 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Haha, yes maybe, but you should see their eyes when they watch a big lion hunting - it's so cool watch them watching 😁

Hahaha, yes it must be fun for you to watch their big eyed stares at the lions.
Now you must be careful as they will be scared to leave the house, thinking that there are big roaring kitties outside 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Sea Lions... it's been a while that I've seen one!
Time to go to SF!

Yep and this one appeared out of nowhere on an open beach.
Normally they only appear in harbors and it was a pleasant surprise.
SF? Southern France?

Now that was so cool to see. There is such beauty in nature, how lucky to catch the sea loin coming to shore.
Thanks for sharing, great photos as usual.

Thank you Lady Robin and that Sea Lion was really a great surprise, as they are usually only in the harbors.
We were so happy to see him.

Thank you for the kind words Lady Robin and you guys also have a beautiful place up there.

Since my childhood days I have never touched peanut butter again, as we had two thin slices of bread and peanut butter to take as lunch every day to school.

So to me !LUV and !PIZZA is a picnic 🤣
