Two posts in one.

Not only monkeys can break hard shells, birds can too.
205.jpg

Watch this guy, as he knows that there is a juicy Sea Squirt inside that hard shell.

Post 1 will show you how the bird cracks the shell.
Post 2 will show you the sea squirts.

Both posts are in here.

A short walk on the beach delivered up these amazing Kelp Gull actions.
The shell of the seasquirt was baked hard in the morning sun at low tide and the bird had an innovative way to get at the meat inside the shell.
Come and see.

Right, there he goes and come watch how he breaks the hard shell.
207.jpg

Up at speed into the sky he went.
220.jpg

Carefully selecting his spot in the rocks in the shallows.
229.jpg

Boom, he dropped the shell down onto the rocks in the water.
234.jpg

Now what is innovative about this you may ask?
When the shell cracks the Sea Squirt realizes that it's an attack and it releases a stinking squirt of water. The sea water washes the stinking water away before the bird eats the Sea Squirt.
232.jpg

Post 2. Let's have a look at the Sea Squirts that the birds eat.

This part of the post is suitable for the #aquaticsentinels community hosted by @juanbg

This is what the juicy Sea Squirts look like and the fishermen find them as ideal bait to catch the big fish from the shore.

Here you can see the bird picking up the Sea Squirt and the sand on the beach was covered by them. At high tide the sea will claim the sea squirts back. (My own photo)
190.jpg

Pyura stolonifera, commonly known in South Africa as "red bait" (or "rooiaas" in Afrikaans), is a sessile ascidian, or sea squirt, that lives in coastal waters attached to rocks or artificial structures. Sea squirts are named for their habit of squirting a stream of water from their exhalant siphons when touched at low tide.

pyura_stolonifera_field.jpg
Pyura stolonifera is an ecosystem engineer that can drastically alter habitats. Dense aggregates like the one shown here can dominate all substrata from the mid-intertidal to the subtidal zone, exclude other sessile species, and provide habitat for other organisms (Photo: Marc Rius)
Source

This species is found in coastal areas of the cool-temperate and warm-temperate marine bioregions of southern African, from Namibia on the west coast to south-eastern South Africa, but is absent from the region's subtropical and tropical bioregions. It is found from the intertidal zone to at least 10 m underwater.

I think that the ancient fishermen watched the birds and that's where they got the idea to use the Sea Squirts as a bait called "Red Bait" over here.

There are also different species of Sea Squirts in Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the southern hemisphere.

Cool, here the crows open nuts the same way: they pick them up and drop them from some height, and sometimes the nuts fall on cars ... 🤣
But that they know that the Squirt will release the stinky water is great indeed 👍

Good evening Hannes,

A long hard day for us and I didn't even do a second post today.

We have doves here that swallow whole peanuts in its shells 🤣
Always walk around with a helmet on in case a crow drops a nut on your nut 🤣

Yes, that was amazing to see and they are very intelligent birds.

Cheers and thanks.

Good evening Zac,

we both have had a hard day, but yours was certainly a lot harder, because I have only been sitting at the computer, and yours was certainly more productive.
I didn't even have the time to edit one single photo - only a few moments inbetween to look on the Hive or on Twitter. I'll go on working for one or two more hours and then I'll try to find some sleep.

Haha, yes you have to take care, but it's always funny to see them hit a car and it's not yours 😎

Hi Hannes,

Nope we are both productive guys and even if you just sit at a PC, you are also productive my friend.
Just different situations and you would do the same if you were in my shoes, as I will be in your shoes 🤣

I hope that you had a nice sleep.

Hahaha, yes, we can always laugh at others, but if it happens to us then we curse 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Zac,

I think you would already have told some people the right words, but I haven't and I won't, that's the difference 😉

I had a short but deep sleep and then a busy day, so I haven't been in the mood to go online in the evening. Just a little twittering has been all I could do yesterday, and today might not be different.

That's right, we laugh until the nut hits us 🤣

Hi Hannes,

Each to his own methinks 😉

I also still have some twittering to do tonight, but I first had to get the posts in.
Had a busy day as usual and tomorrow will continue with some repairs here on the cottage.

A cold ice pack on the knob always works 😜

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Zac,

a little bit of Twittering and some photo editing was all I have done this afternoon. Tomorrow will be a long day at work, but hopefully this time I'll have some time for other things than work 😆

With "cottage" you mean the new cottage you have found or are you repairing the old one before you sell it?

Hi Hannes,

As long as you are busy then I and Father Time are happy 🤣

So maybe today we will see a post 😉

Yes, I still have a few things here to do before I sell and now all of the floor strips are new.
They used plastic strips in the pasts, but I replaced them with aluminum strips to join the cartpets to the tiles on the floors. A lot of drilling and screwing, but now it's done as many of the plastic strips were broken.
I also installed new light fittings in two rooms thus far and have another 3 rooms to do.
They had the old ceiling fan lights and I am taking them all off and replacing them with modern light fittings.

Cheers and thanks.

Good evening Zac,

yep, I've got enough to do 🤣 but today is an easy day, so I could edit some more photos and also make a post 😃

It's a good idea to fix some things before you sell the house. You will certainly get a higher price when the repairs are done.

Good and sunny afternoon Hannes,

Seen your lovely post and I was really impressed.

Yes, a couple more nigly things that I am finally getting to, as the house was not maintainened for many years before we moved in here.
I don't want the new owners also to struggle with it.

A good afternoon from our swimming pool here today Hannes.

The storm has landed and we have a bunch of hungry and wet squirrels here.
They can't get to their buried nuts, as they don't do scuba diving in the garden 🤣

Yes, time seems to have restricted both of us now, as things are mad at your end and exactly the same over here.

But let's stop apologizing and just do our thing as and when we can.
Dark and foggy here now, 12C and there's already flooding in some of the coastal areas.

Cheers and thanks.

Good evening Zac,

I have just seen your post and hope that it doesn't come bad - just a little bit of rain and nothing more and if there's flooding it should be where no people are.

Well, it seems you've got a lot to do to feed the little critters - what would they do without you. You will have to leave quite some bags of nuts form them somewhere hidden ;)

It has cooled down here too and it's heavily raining outside.

Bad here Hannes now Hannes and we pray for those in the low lying areas.
Short bursts of rain with huge drops drenching everything.
Had some hail also this afternoon, but we were in the mall.
We are at 9C now with icy howling winds.

A surprise early this morning and you will see it in my second post.

Cheers and thanks.

Most of them flooded out again and let me tell you that I have never seen such intense rain before like last night. The winds were scary and at one stage the fine hail threatened to break our kitchen windows.

It reminded me of the time when all of our room windows were knocked out by big hail stones.
We had just moved to a big city and there were 5 of us in one room. My gran, mom, me and my two sisters. So we moved the double bed that my gran, mom and sisters slept on. (I slept on the floor), and we placed the double bed below the window. Then the 5 of us held the blankets in front of the window to stop the hail coming into the room.
The two adults held the top and us three shorties held the bottom of the blanket.
We were all drenched by the water 🤣

Hahaha, imagine that, Austria hotter that Cape Town. Many would say impossible 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Wow, we have had bad hail storms here before, house roofs and even cars (mine too) have been almost destroyed, but we have always been safe inside the house. I remember 10 centimeters high hail on the ground, just like snow. This must have been a real frightening experience for you, especially because you were a kid.

Well, that might have been yesterday, but today we have temperatures at about 10C ❄️

Oh yes, I remember it well and it was a real battle as our arms grew lame holding that blanket up.
During winter my gran would make a fire outside and place bricks on it. Then she would wrap the bricks in paper and put it under our blankets like hot water bottles.

That day of the hail storm it was raining all day and we had no hot bricks. Most of the blankets were wet and it was an icy night. I slept on the floor for maybe 2 hours and spent the rest of the night sitting up, taking care not to wake the females.

Glad that you guys were safe in your house and that also sounds like the kind of hail storm that we had.

Cheers and thanks.

Oh well, I can imagine that I also wouldn't forget such happenings. That must have been a crazy night, crazy and sad.
I know that thing with the hot bricks. The old people here have warmed their beds that way too.

My parents house has walls that are 1 meter thick - no hurricane would be able to destroy it ... maybe take off the roof though ;)

My gran was my rock and the only person that ever hugged me as a child. She left us when I was 13 years old and my world caved in.

Yeah, I heard that many old people used the warm bricks, clever people methinks.

Wow, that house will stand for many more years and if it's built the old way, the roof will be easy to replace. And costly of course as nowadays the more flimsy materials cost 10 times more.

Cheers and thanks.

So true my friend and I remember her love and kindness to this day.

Yep, the old houses were built by master tradesmen and nowadays a new building here cannot make 5 years.
We have a lovely and pristine old house across the road here that was built in the 1600s and I think that it will never collapse. They have also replaced the battens and sheets.

Maybe a few more mountain goats will be birthed in your old house. It will be your house one day.

Cheers and thanks.

Nobody trusts anybody anymore.

All things in the past have been made to last forever, but nowadays the believe that they can't make any money when their stuff doesn't get broken after a defined time. They don't care about the environment, they only care for their wallet.

I have cameras at home which are over 80 years old, but they still work. Imagine your and my digital camera in 80 years - will they still work?

Hahaha, they call it "turn over" my friend and a 6 month warranty guarantees that the item will maybe last for 6 months 🤣

Nope, after 5 years my SX60 is tired, but I will use it until it falls apart, it may last for another year.
By that time they will have released the SX71 and my new SX70 still in a box in my cupboard will also be discontinued.
As you know I also have a few very old cameras here 🙂

Cheers and thanks.

Especially since this pandemic has begun the people have become worsein my eyes.

There was a TV set we have had where the warranty was 2 years. Can you guess when it broke? It was almost exactly 2 years after we bought it that some electric part broke and the repair would have cost more than a new tv.
I think I remember that you also have old cameras 😉

Ha, we sold our TV today and it's so uncanny that you talk about a TV here.
Now Marian will cancel our monthly TV licence fee.

The thing was sitting at the bottom of my cupboard for 2 years and it really got in my way, so we took it in to a place called" Cash Crusaders" and they paid us 10% of what we paid for it new.

So yes, you are are right and like cameras you pay more for the spares than you paid for the item.
That's why they make nothing to last anymore.
A real rip off, but they call it financial turnover to befuddle the public.

Cheers and thanks.

We need our tv for streaming movies and watching YouTube mainly. Of course we also watch the news most times, but it mainly is for entertainment.

Almost everything is worth half the price right after you have bought it and then the price goes down day by day.

I think it's our own fault - when I was young everything was repaired at home by my dad. He still does it, but depending on the price of new things it's often not worth the work.

Ah yes, Marian works full time with her students on the PC and at Papillon, so she has no time for anything else and I work at Papillon and Hive.

So true and most of the time it's all worthless after a few years.

Yes life can be a struggle at times and I resent replacing anything with the rubbish that they sell today.
But the strong old materials are hard to find and they cost a fortune. That's why regular maintenance is so important. The new things are indeed pricey, and one has to replace them more often so that the companies can keep their shareholders happy with record profits.

Cheers and thanks.

I used to watch mainly football and Cricket, but it was time consuming, as I would much rather be outside when I had some time to spare. So eventually I gave it up and I am much happier that I did.
Besides they charged a big fee to watch international sports and with all of the other price inreases in life over here it became unaffordable.
Marian never watched anything so it was really not hard to give it up.

Yes, I agree with you about the quality and they should also can the many repeats,

So In the study I found Marians book and it looked interesting, so I opened it at the bookmark to read a few lines and guess what was printed on the bookmark ?

May our Lord give that they will last for many more years, as when you have retired, then you will move closer to them.

We also tried a long walk on a wine farm today, but I had to rest the leg a few times,
My knee is finally packing up and Marian will make and appointment with a knee specialist to see me when he returns from holiday in October.
I have had an orthroscopy and at other times silicone injections, but now it has just gotten worse.

So yes, when one's tired sleep comes easy and maybe you counted only half a sheep 🤣

Same here and we pray for all of you every day.

We still have great doctors here and remember that the first heart transplant was done here.
The thing is that I do not have a normal system and one doctor even told us that my system is similar to a race horse 🤣

So yes, it is a big battle with my auto-immune system and the cameras both at the bottom and the top shows there is nothing wrong. They thought that I had internal bleeding, but found none. Then it was full blood tests and other things and still nothing.
Only the Ferratin (Iron) is abnormally low and I have been on pills to restore it for more than a year now.

So, tomorrow I will get a full load of Ferratin intraveniously and a few days later another one.
Let's see what happens.

The knee is another story and we have to wait for the doctor to return from holiday next month.

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Hannes,

Only my pleasure 🙂

They say that my energy levels are too low due to the lack of Ferratin.

Early morning we went to open the "Fresh Start" trauma course at the other side of town. Then we went to the police station afterwards to collect an accident report form, as a gay opened his car door and the wind ripped the door out his hand and banged the door into our car next to his car.

And then the fun started as my Ferratin appointment was for 11am.

We had a real run-around today as the medical aid application did not have all of the information.
The doctor did not tell us that we would have to collect the bags of Ferratin from the pharmacy at a hospital and we arrived at his rooms without it.

So then we went back to the hospital to collect the stuff, but they told us that they did not have the authorised release codes.
So we went back to the doctor's rooms and he and his secretary sorted the codes out with the hospital and told us that we could now go and fetch it.

Back at the hospital pharmacy a lady told us to wait for half an hour, as they have not received the clearances on their system yet. So we were annoyed and we waited. And waited and waited.
3 hours later they had still not received the clearances and I said to Marian that we are going home.

Guess what, as we were driving home the lady at the hospital called and said that they had received the clearances and that we must come tomorrow to collect the stuff.

But this is not where it ended, as we called the doctor and he told us that couldn't do it tomorrow as he is fully booked. The only time that he could do it is on Saturday at 12 noon.

So how's that for a day?

Cheers and thanks.

Hi Zac,

oh well, that was a busy day ... waiting and driving for nothing. I would be annoyed and even more annoyed at the doctor who has made the mistake and don't have time for you tomorrow. Oh yes, I would be annoyed because now he destroys the weekend too. But what can you do? You need him for your health.

Hahaha, luckily I have much endurance Hannes and we collected the bags today.
Can you believe that I only had to wait 15 minutes, as Marian went into the hospital and she said that the lady at the pharmacy was very nice and that she apologised to us.
Now why could they not do this yesterday after hours of struggle?

Yep, we are booked up with work tomorrow and now Saturday is also gone. On Sunday I will have to recuperate, so the day will also be gone.
You know what I will say here 😉

Cheers and thanks.

Ha, remember only that you and I am the same and I very rarely get angry, so just ignore the angry thoughts my friend.

I made sure that I was his last booking tomorrow, but I am prepared in case Lady luck has deserted me and there will still be 10 patients ahead of me.

In the morning I will get a newspaper and a magazine, one for in case I have to wait and the other for the transfer procedure as it takes 45 minutes.

In case I faint afterwards, I have told Marian that they must carry me out and put me in the car's driving seat, as I want to drive home when I awake 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

I am seldom really angry but this time I can't step back anymore.

I do hope that everything goes as planned for you today my friend and Lady Luck will stay with you.

Hahaha, and Marian will sit on the passengers seat, patiently waiting till you wake up 🤣

So I do hope everything will be fine and the procedure will help you mate.

I am on your side and give them your view of things.

Yes, I write extra slowly and carefully, as it did take an hour to pump all of the stuff into me, but thankfully no fainting and I am a bit whoosy in the head, but nothing that I cannot manage.
They will do another blood test in 6 weeks from now and let's hope and pray that the levels have improved satisfactory.
So I just have to hang in there.

Marian sat in the room during the transfer process and the doctor stayed for the first 10 minutes to see if anything bad would happen.
But then he left us alone for the rest of the hour and I read the day's newspaper while Marian worked in her book of crossword puzzles.
You can see that we have done this in hospitals before 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Thank you and I still have a bit of a "wooly" head with dull headaches, but the doctor said that it will last for only a few days afterwards. Last night was a bad one and sleep was maybe only 3 hours.
Now I feel like the walking dead 😉

Oh yes, it's only about the 8th or 9th time that we do this excercise together 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

I haven't had much sleep in the past days and know how you feel ... no, I don't know it because I didn't have to go through this transfer process. Just take care and in a few days you'll feel better. You know that yourself since you have done it quite a few times ;)

Nope, this transfer was a new first for me my friend.
Before I had operations and blood transfusions and also some other fixes such as a doctor opening my broken nose with a medical hammer and a chisel. Marian sat through all of them just like she did with this one.

Thankfully I already feel better and life goes on my friend.

Cheers and thanks.

Proudly I can say the she has only once seen me lose it and I ended up at a police station.

Cheers and thanks.

Thank you Hannes, but the honor does not belong to us as it belongs to our Master.
He has deemed it fit for us to become friends.
Maybe he wants me to teach you something about your naughtiness 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

I suppose when the cookies disappeared in your parents home when you were a child, you blamed your sister 🤣🤣🤣

But don't worry as I forgive you 🤣

Well, I know that you will not believe me now, but you are right, I blamed my sisters and my brother because I hated cookies, really 😀 Only 1 or two years ago I started liking the cookies my wife makes for Christmas and now I eat them.
And thanks a lot for forgiving me that I told the truth 🤣🤣🤣

So strange as I also didn't like cookies, but now I eat chocolate cookies. My favorite to eat is rusks.
Nice rough cut Musli rusks with raisins in them.

By me you are always forgiven my friend.

Cheers and thanks.

Damn! How the heck did these birds get to learn these tricks. Hehe, I'm sure they hardly miss their target when dropping the shell.

Intelligence my friend and I don't think anyone has ever figured out how and when the birds figured out that there were meat inside those ugly cases.
Maybe a wave broke one open on a rock in medieval times.

Yes, they are very precise with their dropping of the shells and they even wait for a wave to break and the water to pull back before they drop the shell onto a rock in the shallow water.

Ha, this is amazing! It is not for nothing that seagulls are among the most intelligent birds on a par with raven.

Sorry, this one slipped through my friend.

Yes seagulls share the honors of intelligence with the ravens and the crows.

It's incredible how intelligent even those animals labeled as lower really are! They can think. It has to make one reconsider if brain size really is that important.

Animals are the same. They don't forget things that upset them. Even a wasp, bee, or fish remembers such moments.

Exactly and yes, they do remember.
