Ungwa Mai-gero Farming Season Begins

farm6.jpg

This past year living in my present somewhat sub-urban Ungwa Mai-gero neighbourhood has made me take stock of my life and realize that I've lived some sort of city boy life with mostly urban experiences. This is even funny to me as I've lived in not-so-large cities like Lagos or Abuja but smaller cities like Port-Harcourt, Warri and Yenagoa.

I just realized I have never experienced the complete planting season from start to finish. I have seen people garden and even occasionally plant vegetables in the backyard, but nothing as beautiful as what I am experiencing at the moment.

I moved to this suburban Ungwa Mai-gero neighbourhood in Kaduna State sometime in November 2021 and I must confess I have enjoyed the simplistic and nature-loving way of life. All my neighbours seem to have nomadic livestock like chickens, goats, rams and the occasional herd of cattle dawdling by living among us. I find myself talking to the animals sometimes like they are domesticated pets or like they understand a word I am saying and even find myself chasing goats owned by the neighbours.

In the month of June, every single person began cultivating every bit of empty land around them like everyone in the neighbourhood was waiting for some sort of sign. I find this really amazing as every single land is being tilled and prepared for the planting season all around me.

I asked the sweet elderly couple who live close by why they waited till June to start farming and what they would be growing on their farm. The woman said with a smile, "Are you asking so you could help us get fertilizers?"

I really would have loved to help out with fertilizers for their farms. Well, time will tell. She went on to tell me that June is when the land is soft enough to be tilled and prepared for the panting season, anything before that time would make the farming endeavour very arduous.

She said this farming season like many before this one, she will be planting crops like;

  • Okro(okra)
  • Sweet potato
  • Soya bean
  • Tomato
  • Cassava etc.

I find their farms really fascinating and would really love to be a part of their farming season. The elderly couple said I am welcome to help out with farm chores if that's really what I want to do and said it was okay if I document their farm plots for my blog.

I haven't ever been this excited about farming as I am at the moment and even wish I could be given a piece of land of my own so I get dirty and grow all the amazing things they are planting at the moment and even more.

I would be posting all the changes in all the pockets of farm plots scattered around my beautiful and exciting Ungwa Mai-gero neighbourhood in the coming weeks.

You must insist on doing some farm chores! that's the only way you'll get your hands dirty in farming! 😂 But on a serious note, the farm is huge and its exciting to see the produce it will provide once the season ends! Well, share it here soon!

What a wonderful opportunity to learn about preparing the land, growing the plants, and harvesting the food! This is great, and should make for some interesting blogs! Kudos! 😃
