Real life got in the way, and this post is out later than usual, but here it is. Joining the weekly challenge again, and this time with one of the newest rulesets:

This ruleset doesn't prompt us to apply much strategies, apart from having to choose only 5 cards instead of the actual 6; which means if the mana limit allows it, we can squeeze in the lineup cards with higher mana since there's fewer to pick from. And that was my reason for the lineup in this battle:

Two more rules in this battle: all monsters have reach, which means that all melee attackers can strike from the second position; and every card has divine shield, meaning they're immune to the first attack.

Only fire, water and dragon splinters were available here, so I went with the fire team. Although this was a game in diamond wild, I've decided to give modern league a try, so I only have modern cards available.

My strategy and lineup:

  • Conqueror Jacekw as the summoner: speed can make the difference in winning or losing a game, and the piercing ability comes really handy
  • Forgotten One as tank: high melee attacker with retaliate, and lot of HP; also the immunity would come in handy in case of poison attacks
  • Grum Flameblade: on the second position because of the reach ruleset; and in case the first tank falls, also a lot of hp, and the void and void armor would make it a good choice in case there's a lot of magic attacks. Besides, there's always a possibility to have bloodlust kicking in!
  • Djinn Apprentice: high magic damage dealer, crossing fingers for good luck in the scattershot
  • Tenyii Striker: didn't want to count solely on scattershot as damage, so chose a backline attacker with good melee attack
  • Countess Sinash: One of my favourite damage dealers: extra speed, blast and affliction!

My opponent had a maxed Kelya, focusing on melee attack: Baakjira as tank, being able to soak a ton of damage; followed by sandworm and deeplurker, both high melee damage dealers. Swamp Spitter next with the repair ability (great with this summoner since it gives +1 shield), and wave brood as a backline taunt. Pretty good strategy, the maxed wave brood would attract the attacks, hopefully giving enough time to the melee attackers to cause havoc. Fortunately, the scattershot from my summoner could make me evade the taunt.

Round 2 comes and I lose my djinn thanks to deeplurker attack, although both sand worm and wave brood from the opponent were already low on health.

And early on round 3 wave brood is gone, while baakjira is only 4 health, just an attack away from my tank.

Not only baakjira falls, but worm takes tank position; and with so low hp, grum strikes from reach position and eliminates sand worm, gaining bloodlust!

Shortly after, the tenyii finishes the ranged attacker, leaving only deeplurker facing 4 opponents with almost full health: victory was certain!

I go for Dragon where I have my best high mana cards. I don't play modern because I don't have a consistently maxed out deck, I have a few key great cards... that are mostly not modern 🙁 but I have made Champion league for first season ever 🙂 even though its just because players are chasing rewards in modern 🙄

Congrats! I've reached champion in wild also, using only modern cards. Will be hopping between both formats and see how I fare.
