Life at the peer

avatar

While travelling abroad, one of the things I like is to try and blend in with the locals, and check the places where "real" day to day life happens, away from the fancy hotels and the tourist traps.

In Sal, one of the islands of Cape Verde, Santa Maria was where I stayed; and there was a perfect place for a monomad photoshoot, where a good part of the small city life happened: the peer of Santa Maria.

Fishing is a big part of the island's economy, and local fishing boats unloaded most of their catches here; some of the fish was prepared on the peer itself!

There was a constant flow of local and tourists; from sunrise to sunset, there wasn't a time where the peer wasn't filled with people.

Some boat tours and diving tours departed from the peer, although most of the tourists there were doing the same as me at this time, trying to get a glimpse of the local culture. Apart from the local fisherman and fish cleaning staff, there were also some craftsman, showing some of the local art.

And while the peer was full of life, there were also some locals just chilling out nearby... who knows, maybe tourist watching!

Or contemplating the crystal clear sea and thinking about life.

As you can see, it's a peer definitely worth a visit... and in full colour! 😉

And here you wouldn't be disappointed for sure. Besides, I found in the local market the same local products such as coffee and salt, way cheaper than in the tourist shops! !BEER

The place is quite beautiful and the pictures that friends show are also quite interesting for us to see.

Nice photos. I like the monochrome shots of the boat. Makes it seem timeless. Like it could have been anytime in the last 100 years.

Apart from the better boats, I can believe the traditional fishing hasn't changed that much in that side of the world! :) !PIZZA

Busy life at the peer :) We can only speculate how blue the water is as you put the shots in b&w but I think I can imagine :D ;)
