Nature trails in center Portugal - Part II

avatar

Finally got time to share a few more photos from the little nature getaway a couple months ago. Ready to see some more hidden gems in center Portugal? This is the second post about it, and you can see the first post here!

After visiting the walkways and trails near Lousã, our base, we ventured to see other trails on the vicinities. The first ones was Fragas de São Simão, in which a mix of wooden walkways and smal trails took us to viewpoints facing huge rock formations, not without passing by a fluvial beach first.

The water in these little rivers is ice cold, but tastes great in the Summer, when the weather gets really hot in this region.

Apart from the man made structures, going a little up of down the river, you can normally find cool spots to bathe, more natural.

I lost count of how many time in my youth have I bathed in places like these, so mountain rivers do have a special place in my heart.

This is one of the viewpoints, with the walkway up to the top of the rocky formations.

Typical landscape in center Portugal; in this time of the year, the brooms are in full bloom, with their beautiful yellow colour standing out amidst the green.

As usual, wildlife is all around. Some more elusive than others. In this viewpoint, swifts were flying all around, but it was impossible to get a decent photo of them. Butterflies, on the other side, were a far easier photo subject.

And this lizard cooperated as well!

I did wanted to snap more wildlife photos, but unfortunately not that many opportunities appeared. Oh well, just being in the middle of nature was rewarding enough. And the next destination took it to another level; following Fragas de São Simão, we went to explore another nature trail, this one starting from another fluvial beach.

And this was by far my favourite trail in this getaway!

It's good to see how clear are the trails descriptions in the information boards, giving good details also about local fauna and flora: nature tourism done right!

The beach itself was pretty big, and there was a big space as support with wooden tables and benches and places to build a fire; perfect place for a picnic.

And as soon as the actual trail starts, it just got more and more beautiful!

The trail is linear, going from the beach to a waterfall, around 6km to each side. And apart from the luxurious green, it follows a little creek, so you hear the relaxing sound of running water along with all other nature sounds.

Small wooden bridges crossed the water from time to time, making you hop between the two margins.

The only bad thing about this trail? Not having time to do the full trail! 😁 As for the view, I think the photos speak for themselves.

And since I normally look at things on the bright side, not doing the full trail might actually be good: it's a great reason to come back!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Nice flower to end the post. I like the colors of the earlier flowers and butterfly too. The slow shutter speed pictures of the water are also really cool. Looks like a really fun hike. This part of Portugal is really beautiful thanks for sharing with us.
