When strange bugs appear

I love to see wildlife, and I actually travel sometimes with the specific purpose of doing it... and this wasn't one of those days! This was a beach day, with a surprise on the way back! And as I entered this community, I discover that Surprise is actually the theme for a little competition going on, so this is more than suitable.

At the very western tip of continental Europe, lies a pretty cool beach called Praia da Ursa, our destination for the afternoon.

There are a number of reasons for this beach to be awesome: it's in the middle of nature, has those cool rock formations, and it's a steep walk down there, meaning no tourist hordes on the sand!

You might be wondering by the sky's colour "it doesn't look like beach weather". The problem with Sintra, the region where this beach is, is that it has a micro-climate. Only 5 km to the side, and it was warm and sunny! But since the walk is nice, since we were already there, we went all the way down. And true, the weather was crap.

We enjoyed the fresh breeze for a while, and then started the walk back. Over half way, and my friend freezes and tells me to come and see. And in the middle of the track...

... is one of the coolest insects I've seen!

If I'm not mistaken, it's a bush cricket, probably from the Tettigoniidae family. But my area are birds, reptiles, and mammals: I'm mostly clueless about insects. I do know it's a female, because of that sword-like structure in the back.

It's called an ovipositor, and it's how they lay eggs. In fact, the little critter was walking, sticking the ovipositor on the ground, and wigling her bum!

We enjoyed the show a little more, and then left her alone on her posture spree. But this definitely wasn't expected; and how amazing are her colours??

Nature has these things, and it's good to still be surprised! By the way... any insect pro out there that can pinpoint the species? The photos were taken in Sintra, Portugal, and the geek in my is an identification freak! :)

Have a great week everyone!

I was there once! I didn't go down to the beach though and it was getting late.
And guess what!? I saw that bugger on the path too! It was the only place and only time I saw it. They must really like that spot there.

Really??? What a coincidence! Maybe it's a resident species. I love the beach, the walk there is great, and being so close to Lisboa and without massive tourism is a blessing. Although more and more people go there, it's noticeable nowadays.

Better go out of season I guess... I wish we did go down to the beach though.
But it was getting dark so we just stayed on top.

Wise decision, I wouldn't recommend that track withough good visibility at all. Good thing is... you can always go back, the beach will be there waiting for you! ;)

The place you visited is incredible and the surprise that awaited you with this insect is something wonderful. We did not know that the females had this long structure to lay the eggs, it is incredible.

We leave happy with this publication, because they are great pictures and we learned something new.

it is good we take out some time out of our busy schedule to visit places and learn as well. And i think learning which as been the gain of going to visit places is what we are also benefiting by sending us the picture of a female cricket. i haven't seen insect like this before too.

thanks for sharing

Thank you for entering the competition.
Being when an insect lays eggs is a really nice surprise :-).

If I may advise, visit the ANC discord and you will find the #identification-request channel, where you can insert a link to photos or articles asking for help with insect identification, etc.

A truly unique little insect you came across!🦗

I wish you had a short video clip of the little critter as she wiggled her bum and stuck her ovipositor onto the ground. Maybe another time!

Excellent post! @pardinus

I thought "I should have filmed this" 10 seconds after she stopped! 😁 Maybe I do get another try, will keep an eye out next time I go there!

Rock formation is stunning, enjoying the inclement weather not having many around actually is rewarding in itself.

Your insect find on the pathway most interesting little critter with lovely colours @pardinus thanks for sharing.
