Erling Haaland

Manchester City is a team to be reckoned with; they have been proving it for years. On the back of dazzling performances the Citizens are close to earning a podium among the greats of international soccer, yet the trophy that would make them worthy of such esteem eludes them year after year. The reigning Premier League champions may have held nothing back for the start of the 22-23 campaign in England, but the Championships is a completely different scenario on the football tour, one that has been more cruel, and tortuous for the Celestes in recent seasons; that's why starting as they did today, against Sevilla at home, was so important. Winning, scoring and enjoying the game translates into confidence, in maintaining the hope that it is possible to get closer to the dream of the "orejona", the Olympus (of clubs) in this sport.

Of course, this was only the first match; and despite the fact that the Andalusians are not going through their best moment (four defeats and a draw, after the loss against the English), they are always fierce, even more so at the Sánchez Pizjuán, and scoring four goals in favor of a visit there is something remarkable. Pep Guardiola's men repeated what has been the common denominator so far: Manchester City, with the exception of the setback against Liverpool in the Community Shield, is unstoppable. Particularly because of their particular way of defending and attacking until the first goal is scored. On this occasion Erling Haaland opened the scoring tap (20'), which then followed like a torrent. An action that has also been frequent for the Manchester side this year.

Just to give you an idea, according to Soccerway statistics, the Norwegian striker scored 12 goals in the eight matches (645 minutes) he has played this season; four of those goals were to open the scoring. In the other matches, his goals were used to equalize and/or put his team ahead on the scoreboard. Liverpool is the only opponent Haaland has saved from since his arrival in England; huge. In this match he was at his best until his substitution at 70'. After his first goal, and Foden's 2-0 (58'), his left foot, in front of an unguarded goal by Bono, sealed the match at 67'. It could be argued that Halaand left Sevilla unable to respond.

However, today's display was not the best version of the Spanish side coached by Julen Lopetegui, whose current performance is also fatal. While there were vestiges of trying something from names like Alex Telles and Ivan Rakitić, the rest of the players seemed to be on to something else. Put another way, Sevilla played like a first division team should never play, much less in a competition like the Champions, and definitely not against Manchester City. The most redeemable thing about the Blanquirrojos is the aforementioned Bono; the Moroccan goalkeeper saved as many as he could, including a one-on-one against Kevin De Bruyne. Otherwise, little else. If not corrected in time, a gray season awaits them.

City, on the other hand, could be on the verge of the best season in their history. However, there is concern that, as in previous years, the intense fire with which they have started, with great displays such as the one on this day, will gradually die out until it is extinguished in the final months. If they know how to manage against that, they could achieve their main objective.
