The Barter System and Owning a Restaurant

avatar

Owning and managing a business comes with its ups and downs. A restaurant business is no different from this as sometimes, the expenses outweigh the income, and making a profit seems far-fetched.

While this post is not about lamenting the struggles of owning a restaurant business, I will be discussing the importance of leveraging the barter system to reduce expenses accrued in running a business.

Brief History

The exchange of goods and services for goods and services can be referred to as the barter system.

This system dates back to the era of subsistence where communities and families struggled to produce the goods they required for survival and economies had to adopt the barter system of trade to survive.

However, given the shortcomings of the barter system, a new means of exchange was introduced known as money.

How Viable?

Owning a restaurant brings about the need for creativity and innovation to stay in business and keep up with the competition in the market.

This creativity can also be applied to solving expenditure issues that accrue to the business daily, weekly, monthly, or as the case may be.

We realized that a major expense faced by the restaurant was in respect to the regular purchase of diesel to power the restaurant. Government-provided light supply is a challenge we grapple with as well, hence the use of personal generators to provide light.

Luckily, we met a diesel supplier who was willing to give us a certain liter of diesel weekly in exchange for our food worth the price of the amount of diesel he supplies.

This trade by barter system has been running for almost a year and I can tell you, it is one less major expense we have to worry about and we are grateful.

We are looking to see other things that this system can be applied to within the restaurant to reduce expenses drastically.

Thank you for your precious time!

I use any little time I have to pre-record videos (mostly at night) and jot down points for my write-ups (during the day)- it could be while I am waiting at the bank, in a queue, or even in traffic. Time is of great value to me.

It's truly a struggle sometimes but it is completely worth it.

You are a rock star!! It is so awesome how you used barter to reduce your expenses. I am a big believer in barter.
About 10 years ago I owned a small computer repair shop in SW Washington. Would use Barter a lot to reduce the expenses involved in running that type of service business. :-)
I am so impressed I started following you :-)

Thank you so much for your lovely words 😊.

It is indeed a really cool system if you can find like-minded people to do business with and cut down on cost.
