[Eng+Spa] Day of Nothing to Fear + Día de Nada Qué Temer

This Saturday I am writing early, due to certain various things, I did not sleep much, so I decided to search the list of the ephemeris of the #History that was commemorated today, to advance in the preparation of the record. To tell the truth, I don't expect anything interesting to happen during this weekend, after all, my #life is usually calm. Well, going directly into the issue of the anniversary, I must say that, at first, I saw a celebration on the list of the day that I did not understand, but after finding out a little about it, I decided to share it today.

At different moments in the history of the world, there are episodes in which a proclamation, or a #speech, marks the course of history and leaves a deep mark for posterity. The Word has the power to evoke ideas, and ideas can trigger truly amazing phenomena. Today is 'Nothing to Fear Day', this is in memory of the fact that on May 27, 1941, in his inaugural speech as the 32nd President of the United States, the lawyer and #politician Franklin Delano Roosevelt used a phrase that is become a motto: 'the only thing we have to fear is fear itself'.

By the way, this was not his first speech of this type, F.D. Roosevelt was elected as president four times in a row, for which he governed from 1933 to 1945, which was the year of his death. This president broke with a government political tradition that had been established by George Washington in the 18th century, that of not serving more than two terms as president (or not being re-elected more than once), but it turned out that, since his Victory in the 1932 elections, Roosevelt promoted measures to deal with the social effects of the 'Great Depression' that had been affecting the population since the Wall Street Stock Market Crash in the late 1920s.

The Stock Market Crash, as it is also known, brought the economy to a standstill and led many investors and stockbrokers to suicide, in addition to bankrupting numerous companies, thereby it generated high unemployment and combined with other events to produce a severe economic recession, which is what we call the Great Depression. The set of measures that F. D. Roosevelt implemented from his first government was what they called the 'New Deal' and that, although it did not manage to end the problems of the economy of his nation, allowed him to experiment with different investments and measures that served to alleviate the serious situation of a part of the population.

+++

This focus, on trying to make nearly 12 years of suffering for underprivileged citizens undoable, was what gave him a strong base of support and allowed him to remain the front-runner in every election he ran to the presidency of the United States. In my view, other political figures of the time could have done something like this in those 12 years between the Wall Street Crash and the New Deal, but it seems that none of the upper classes of politics and society economy was interested, rather, it seems that they liked that common people suffered misfortunes, due to the elitist and classist principle that this demonstrates the 'innate superiority' that the rich and powerful (aristocrats, patricians, kings, nobles or whatever as the case may be) they had with respect to the lower classes. I know it sounds crazy, but I've seen it in various historical records with these views of Empires, Kingdoms, and various governments in different parts of the world, so I don't rule out the possibility.

Washington's idea of only ruling twice was inspired by the Roman figure of Cincinnatus, or Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a Roman patrician who served as consul, general, and later dictator by appointment of the Roman Senate. He was called upon to take extraordinary powers twice to save Rome from disaster, but each time he finished his work, he relinquished the command he had been given and retired to his lands to continue farming. For this reason he was regarded as an embodiment of the Roman ideal of personal disinterest in running government, detachment from temporarily handed over authority, and personal honesty in committing himself to the cause of defending Rome.

+++

Washington admired the image of Cincinnatus and imitated him, which is why he only held the presidency twice, which remained an unwritten tradition, until F.D. Roosevelt arrived and, at the end of his second consecutive term as president, proposed himself as a candidate for his party, the Democratic Party, won the nomination. He is the only North American president with four consecutive terms of government, because after his death (in 1947) the North American Congress approved the 'Twenty-second Amendment' that limits the president's terms to two. So there would be no other case like Roosevelt's.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt is a very interesting historical figure, but I have strayed a lot from the initial theme of the publication, it is about the speech he gave in 1941, on a day like today. In that speech, Roosevelt did not call for an absolute renunciation of #fear, but rather pointed out that fear was part of living beings, that it was crazy not to be afraid at all, but paralyzing fear is indeed the worst enemy, because it makes it impossible for you to act to solve the problem and overcome the situation, so then, it is not about giving up all fear, without learning to identify it, feel it and use it as motivation for action. You have to fear the fear that does not allow you to solve, you do have to fear that, but if you can overcome that and (despite being afraid) you manage to act to create solutions, then you are on a path that distinguishes you from the weak in spirit, and you are on a path that was traveled throughout the history of mankind by those we remember today as 'Heroes'.

Well, it's time to close the publication, wishing you to conquer your fears, that you are well and that we can read each other again another time.

Happy Nothing to Fear Day. It's a reminder that sometimes our fears can be more overwhelming than the actual situation. As Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." So let's face each challenge with confidence and courage.

Wonderful! I learned a lot of thing about F. D. Roosevelt from this post. He helped the Americans to come out from that "Great depression". And, he was rewarded with two more terms of Presidency :)

He died during his last term, if it weren't for that I come to believe that he would have been elected again for another presidential term.
